  • creating an excel shortcut?

I'm trying to make shortcuts in Excel so that when I type 5k, the spreadsheet entry shows up as 5,000. Or when I type 7m, it shows up as 7,000,000 and typing 8.5m results in 8,500,000. How do I create something that works for all numbers?

  • satellite dish used as wi-fi antenna?

I've got a old satellite dish that I would like to use to pick up a wifi signal from less than 800 feet away. I've seen several sites that detail how to convert a dish for this purpose, and it looks like it should easily work for this distance. My dish is about 50 feet from my house. However, every version of this project uses a coax n-connector and doesn't explain the connection to a laptop or desktop computer. No computer has a coax connector, and even if it did standard coax cable would lose too much of the signal at that distance.

My laptop could accept ethernet or usb, how do I make the connections from the dish with a coax connector to my computer?

  • connect laptop to TV?

I'd like to connect my Dell Studio 1558 laptop to my TV so I can watch Internet programming on a larger screen. However, I have and old TV without any inputs other than a standard coax cable connector. I do have a DVD player with coax, S-video and RCA (yellow) plugs. My laptop has all the standard connectors including HDMI and a Firewire plugs. Is there a way to connect the two? What type of cables would I need?

  • wireless network question?

I'm trying to set up a file and printer sharing network with an XP desktop and a Windows 7 laptop. My laptop can connect to my router and get Internet access, but I can't see the other computer or its shared files. Both computers are in the same workgroup, but that workgroup name doesn't have to be the same name as my wireless network name, does it?

  • DirecTV audio skipping?

My DirecTV system has two dishes, one for satellite channels and a second dish for local channels. When watching a local channel, about once every minute or two, the audio "skips" for a fraction of a second. It sort of sounds like an LP record that jumps backward, and you'll hear the last word (or part of a word) repeated. The video doesn't seem to do this, but it's annoying listening to the audio do this time and again. Any ideas on a solution to this problem?

  • Photoshop image edit?

I want to convert a photo of my dog so it can be laser-etched onto a piece of stone as a pet memorial. The company needs it be in just black and white, NOT grayscale. Does anyone have suggestions on how to do this, or point me to an online tutorial?

It needs to look something like this example image:http://www.peternity.com/graphics/imagelib/_144/_6...

  • different domain name & host providers?

I like to leave a domain name registered at GoDaddy, but have another company host the site. If I have GoDaddy redirect/forward to my host provider, how will secondary pages appear in the url? i.e., www.website.com will be at GoDaddy, what will a page called stuff.htm look like? www.website.com/stuff.htm? Or will the secondary pages have whatever domain address I get at the hosting site? (www.newhost.com/stuff.htm?) It might be easier to leave everything at GoDaddy, but other hosts offer more for less money.

  • actionscript leading zero?

keeping score in my Flash game:

    this sets my score at zero on the main timeline: score.text = 0;

this adds points to the score for a correct answer in a movie clip:

    _parent.score.text=

    _parent.score.text+200; (all on one line)

However, I'm getting a leading zero, which I don't want. The score reads as 0200. When I test the score.text as 0+200, I don't get a leading zero. Only when I add them together in my movie clip.

When my dynamic text area was a variable, it worked fine. But I've read that you should name text as instances, not variables, so I'm switching my code.

  • Flash Actionscript?

Working on a Flash-based quiz with fill-in-the-blank answers. I've figured out how to accept lower or upper case answers, but how can I truncate an answer to eliminate any white space before or after the answer that the player types in?

example: "wolf" or "Wolf" shows as a correct answer but any blank space entered before the "w" or after the "f" shows as an incorrect answer.

My other question -- I'm trying to accept multiple answers as correct but the following line of code only gives a correct result for "wolf" but not "wolves". ??? Thanks in advance.

if (answer == "wolf" || "wolves")

  • wi-fi on Win 98 laptop?

I installed a wireless usb adapter for my Win 98se laptop in able to pick up hotspots at hotels, restaurants, etc. Installation seemed to be OK, I can pick up free wireless networks near a couple of different Wendy's in town. Signal is good, and the status shows as connected. However my browser can never get to any web pages, it just times out after a couple of minutes. Are there some settings I need to change in IE or am I missing a step?

  • duplicate this javascript effect?

I'm looking for an online tutorial that would show me how to duplicate the popup image effect that is done on this page below.

    http://cbs2.com/watercooler/Miss.California.Christ...

Basically, I'd like to have the full-size image popup when the thumbnail is clicked. The popup is centered on the screen, and the opacity of the main page is shaded while viewing the popup. The popup window itself is not a standard popup, as it has no chrome or other window features other than a close button

  • official timer?

Who keeps the "official" time during a college football game? Is it one of the field refs, or an official in the booth? Occasionally you'll hear the referee tell the booth to reset the game clock, but I'm not sure if he's keeping time or someone else tells him to change it.

  • Bowl Eligibility?

I know college football teams need 7 wins in a 12-game season to become bowl eligible, 6 if they have a conference tie-in with a bowl. Do conference championship games count toward the total?

I can't find the official NCAA requirements online anywhere. Could someone post a link showing me where I could find the actual requirements.

I have a spreadsheet made in MS Excel 2003 that gives me a macro warning pop-up whenever I open it. I created the file myself and know that it doesn't contain any macros. How can I get rid of this warning?

  • add wi-fi to Windows 98 laptop?

I've got a old Gateway laptop running Windows 98 with a internal modem. I'd like to be able to have internet access at hotels or hot spots around town. What options do I have and what hardware/software would I need? I have a couple of usb ports, I'd prefer to use that if I could. Speed isn't a big issue, I'd mostly use it for email.
