Convincing a professor to let me make up a test?
Basically, here's what happened.
On Monday, I learned that my grandmother had died, and that Tuesday night, my family would be flying from Florida to Chicago for her funeral. I e-mailed all of my teachers on Monday afternoon and let them know I wouldn't be able to attend Tuesday or Thursday's classes.
Tuesday night, I had a test in a class, and at the last second I checked blackboard on my cell phone, and realized that that teacher had posted an announcement stating that she couldn't come to class test would be online. Upon reading this (and also seeing that my phone wouldn't let me access the test. also that I couldn't e-mail my teacher through the university email app from the phone.) I drove from my dorm to my house, where my family and I packed up and left for the airport.
It wasn't until Thursday afternoon that I was able to find a computer, where I got on blackboard and realized that she had posted another announcement, stating that the test would close Tuesday at 8 PM. I then emailed her, letting her know that I hadn't been able to get to a computer, as I had been very busy travelling, attending the funeral, and visiting family, etc. She replied saying that I should have e-mailed her about the issue sooner, and that my grade will remain a zero.
This test is worth 20% of my grade, and I feel it's pretty unfair that she would not let me at least do SOMETHING to make up the test that would leave me with a C in her class at best.
Can anyone help me delicately word a response e-mail to her? She seemed pretty set on her decision...
Thanks so much
3 AnswersTeaching8 years agoAnyone had kidney stones?
Two months back, I had a kidney infection that has since cleared up. From this experience, I know exactly what kidney pain feels like, so I know my problem now is in my kidneys.
At first I assumed my infection was coming back (or I'd gotten another one), but a urine test said I was infection-free. The pain is the only thing that's wrong with me (with the infection before, I got a fever and became sick after a few days) but I'd barely call it pain. It's really just discomfort, and it's made worse by moving around or walking too much, but it's really not that bad at all. Also, when I had the infection before, it was only in one side, but now it's in both.
I'm hopefully going back to the doctor soon to get more tests done. But anyone that's had kidney stones, do you think that could be the problem? I know it's supposed to be like excruciating pain, but before that were you just a little bit sore in your kidney? Because I'm not really sure what else the problem could be.
3 AnswersOther - Health9 years agoCould my kidney infection be coming back after 2 1/2 months?
2 1/2 months ago, I got a kidney infection, for which I went to a clinic and got antibiotics for. The antibiotics made me very sick (worse than the actual infection) and I eventually went to the emergency room, and got anti-nausea medicine which didn't help anything. Point is, I just stopped taking the antibiotic, and started feeling better, and the infection (I assume) went away.
Now, 2 1/2 months later, I'm beginning to see the same symptoms from the infection before, but I mean maybe it's just in my head.
Is it possible that a kidney infection would come back after that long?
1 AnswerInfectious Diseases9 years agoCan (or does) the US government open your (international?) packages?
I'm currently a US foreign exchange student in India, and I went to a post office to pick up a package from my family. A postal worker proceeded to tell my mom exactly what was in the package because they'd opened it and gone through it "because of terrorism".
Can or does the US government do this? Would they need a warrant?
4 AnswersGovernment9 years agoTell me more about garba? ?
I'm currently a US foreign exchange student in India. As I understand it, there's a festival coming up for which everyone is learning garba, a traditional Indian dance done for this festival.
I've been attending (really watching) garba classes, and I'm super confused. From what I've been told (no one really speaks English here, so this is why I've been having trouble) there are different dances (with different numbers of steps and whatnot). But like how many different dances are there? Do they have different names? I'm so confused. I really would like to find videos of the dances online so I can learn them, but I never can find specific dances. Ugh this is hard to explain.
Anyways can someone just tell me more about this?
4 AnswersLyrics9 years agoKidney infection severe enough to go to a hospital?
Probably about 5 days ago I started experiencing a pain in my side, which got bad enough to the point that I couldn't walk without it hurting about 2 days ago. Yesterday I went to a walk-in clinic (after also having a fever for 2 days) and they told me I had a UTI turned kidney infection (which is weird, considering that I had no previous symptoms of a UTI, although looking back I might have been going to the bathroom more often...)
So the doctor prescribed me antibiotics for 10 days, the first of which I took last night. I woke up this morning feeling worse than ever, even throwing up. I've just been very weak, my fever has been fluctuating, I can't eat anything (or even smell anything or be touched) without feeling very nauseous. The pain in my side makes it difficult to walk or move or even breathe deeply. I've just been in loads of pain.
I've been reading online that kidney infections very often land people in the hospital, and the doctor I saw didn't tell me how severe my condition is. Maybe I'm just scaring myself, but I don't want to end up with permanent kidney damage or a worse condition that I know these can lead to.
How do I know if I need to be checked into a hospital?

4 AnswersGender Studies9 years agoIs it possible that I've ruptured my spleen?
I had mono a few weeks ago, and the symptoms have pretty much gone away now. When I had mono, my spleen was definitely enlarged; I could feel the pressure from it all the time.
Well, my spleen hadn't hurt at all for a long while, until last night I was at a concert and was dancing and jumping around a lot, and had to stop because there was suddenly a sharp stabbing main in my side (right where my spleen was hurting before, so I assume it was my spleen). Today the pain has been there on and off, much worse than it ever was with my mono.
I feel like I should be in much worse pain if my spleen was ruptured, because it isn't THAT bad...I've heard people faint and whatnot from the pain, so I'm not sure whether I should see a doctor over this.
Ruptured spleen? Or what?
1 AnswerOther - Health10 years ago(Apparently) Very weak and often achy hands?
If you'll read my last question, I was concerned because I couldn't pull the trigger of a gun. Upon reading answers that say things like "My 6-year-old/10-year-old daughter can do this, I think someone was playing a trick on you" now I'm very worried that something is wrong with me. While reading these comments, it occurred to me that I often have aches and pains in my fingers/wrists, but rarely anywhere else. I have no idea if I'm just paranoid now and scared that I really AM just that weak, or if something could be wrong with me. But I don't know what that could be.
Help me.
1 AnswerOther - General Health Care1 decade agoLooking to be a foreign exchange student...(with rotary maybe?)?
I honestly want more than anything in the world to be a foreign exchange student. I have wanted to travel all over the world since I was a little girl, but unfortunately it didn't cross my mind to be an exchange student until like...mid October, when I heard about Rotary, and it was very rushed to try to get my parents to allow me to apply in only a couple of weeks. So, here I have some questions for you:
1.) Is there ANY way at all that I can apply late to Rotary? They seem to be the cheapest out there, and have the most countries available that I would want to go to...but next year will be my senior year, so I can't apply next year.
2.) Are there any that are anywhere even close to as cheap as Rotary? I haven't seen any.
3.) Are there any others that offer exchanges to Greenland? That's where I want to go most of all, but it appears that most companies don't offer exchanges there...well, Rotary did :(
Thanks for any help

17 AnswersPhilosophy1 decade agoHow can I get into a good college after my past couple of years of academic disaster?
As much as I'd hate to sound egotistic...I'd say I'm an incredibly intelligent person . I have a genius IQ, and all throughout elementary school, I'd been the top of my class, and teachers recommended that I skip grades, although I never did.
However, when I got to Jr. High, I guess I changed for the worst. I developed that "too smart for school" attitude and refused to do homework, which led to bad grades...you get the idea. They started entering me into lower classes, and I definitely fell behind. I had always been told "look at your standardized test scores Katie! You're so smart! Why can't you do this in school?!" and I guess I didn't listen.
This year I'm entering my junior year of high school. In 9th and 10th grade I had somehow convinced my guidance counselors that taking honors classes would be a good idea; when signing me up for classes for this next year, they decided not to go down that path again.
The thing is, I know I can do great in honors and AP classes, and this year I'm determined to do just that. I really regret the mistakes I've made in school over the last couple of years, and I want to change. I've taken some classes online even and it's helped my GPA go up, and I plan on retaking some of the classes I've done poorly in. I'm changing my attitude around because I want to get into a good college, get a degree, get a good job, ect.
So, I have a couple questions:
1.) How do I convince my guidance counselors to put me in higher level classes? I know I haven't exactly earned them...but I really want to be in them :(
2.) Not gonna lie, my GPA is...in the 2 range, which is obviously not in the college-appropriate. Along with the fact I haven't really done anything extracurricular, my chances for getting into a good school don't look that good (well, I got a 32 on the ACT, not that it'll do anything alongside a 2.5 GPA). What can I do to bring up my GPA? Or increase my chances of getting in a good school?
3.) Any advice for keeping up this attitude I'm going about for this next year? I certainly don't want to give up on myself...
Thanks :)
2 AnswersPrimary & Secondary Education1 decade agoHow much would it cost to fix my laptop?
There are a couple things wrong with my laptop, so here we go:
1. My father set a startup password on it, which he doesn't remember, so we can't get on it. (I've heard several explanations for fixing this, some say it can't be fixed and some say I need to send it to the factory, I guess).
2. There's something wrong with the screen, where it is always extremely blurry or just white, unless it's tilted back and forth again and again and again to find a certain angle that will make the image on the screen appear (I have no idea how this even happen, but it's gotten progressively worse and if I keep using it it'll probably not work anymore).
3. It runs extraordinarily slow almost to the point of not being usable, and while I guess this isn't a problem that prevents it from working, I'd still like it fixed.
My laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ50 Notebook PC running windows vista. Any help?
Thanks :)
3 AnswersLaptops & Notebooks1 decade agoHelp with a geometry question please?
Part a) Given three noncollinear points, construct the circle and then write the equation of the circle.
The points are A (12,-1), B (6,-3), C (4, 3).
Part b) Using the equation and graph of the circle above, determine if the following lines are tangent, secant or neither.
2 AnswersMathematics1 decade agoMy boyfriends parents think I'm rude?
I have never in my life had anyone in my life have a problem with my manners before I met his parents, and I have never had anyone tell me I had bad manners...but apparently his parents don't like me at all. He tells me they say things like about how rude I am all the time...like he told me that just today, since he was asking to see me, his mom said something like "You aren't expecting to see this girl every day right? It would be different if she was sweet and had good manners."
I don't know what I'm supposed to do...I know what having good manners means and includes (I'm 16 years old for God's sake, I know how to behave and how not to behave) , and I really don't know what they think I should be doing that I'm not. Whenever I'm at his house, it's not as if they make it known that I'm doing something that's not appropriate...they seem completely normal, and as if they really do like me. But from what my boyfriend tells me, they pretty much hate me, and that completely kills me. It's not like I'm just meeting them for the first time either, we've been going out for 10 months.
I guess this is kind of a vague question, but any advice? I really don't want them to hate me.
Thanks in advance <3
3 AnswersFamily1 decade agoWhat should I get my boyfriend for his 16th birthday?
Sigh, I can't really think of anything he particularly likes...call of duty, food, playing trumpet in the band...hahaha so I have NO idea what to get him. My 16th birthday was a couple of weeks ago and he bought me a really really expensive (at least for someone who doesn't have and has never had a job) diamond necklace, and I would hate to get him something cheap...soo I really don't know. Help? :(
