  • Why is my 6-year-old pretending she can't read?

My daughter is 6 and while I know she can read, she pretends that she cannot. She'll try to sound things out and knows her kindergarten vocabulary list, but then says she can't read anything else. Problem is, I've caught her reading things - the phrase "Wheee I'm getting dizzy!" on a toy box, and the word "Firefox" on my computer screen. When I mention it, she always comes up with an excuse as to why she knows what the things say, but insists she can't read it. (The excuses are pretty lame too - she's 6, not exactly a criminal mastermind or anything.) Has anyone else heard of this, ever? And WHY would she do this?!

  • For anybody familiar with "Murder Mysteries" by Neil Gaiman?

I have the graphic novel of this story, as well as the version in "Smoke and Mirrors." If you have read this story, could you please answer the following (WARNING: SPOILERS START HERE!)

    1. Why did the narrator kill Tink, Susan, and the roommate?

    2. Did he kill the roommate before he got to Tink?

    3. If the Angel never fell, how did he extract vengence on the narrator? Seems to me he actually did him a favor.

    4. The Angel mentions forgiveness for crimes due to love. Does this really apply in the narrator's situation? I never felt he actually loved Tink.

    5. What's the significance of the narrator getting stuck in the elevator at the end?

I love this story but I feel I'm missing a lot and would appreciate ANY input on this. Thank you!

  • How does an American immigrate to Canada? Any personal experience?

I've seen the forms, but I'm confused as to having to have a certain amount of money to get there, and on a lot of other issues. Any advice from someone who's done it already would be great. Thank you all in advance!

  • What to do when your parents are trying to force their religion upon your child?

I'm an agnostic, my daughter's father (we are divorced) is an atheist. He is dead-set against our daughter ever believing in any sort of higher power. As an agnostic, I'm pretty open-minded and don't mind our daughter at least being aware of what others believe.

That being said, my parents are Christian - my father a devout Catholic, my mother a converted Catholic who started out as a staunch Methodist. I respect their beliefs, but what to do when they're trying to force them on my daughter? Two Christmas gifts they've already given my daughter are a book about the Nativity and a Noah's Ark toy. This isn't the first time they've done something like this. And I know her father is going to insist they don't see her anymore, as they're telling her things in direct conflict with what he's telling her (there is no God, Jesus never existed, the Bible is a fairy tale, etc.)

Any suggestions as to how to handle the entire situation? Thank you all in advance.
