  • Language in "True Grit (2010)"?

The 2010 'True Grit' movie is first class. My question is that the characters speak in a very flowery way with no contractions. Is this the way people actually spoke in the late 1800's? And if you have sources I'd be most appreciative if you included them.

  • Inflation Tax question?

I'm confused about the term "inflation tax". As inflation increases it obviously costs more to buy an item. Say you pay $1.00 this year and have to pay $1.10 next year for an item. Where does the 'tax' come in and does the government gain any direct benefit from the 'tax'?

  • Controlling the Predator?

I've heard that many of the Predator unmanned aircraft in Afganistan are controlled out of Florida. There has to be a time lag between what the Predator 'see's', it's transmission to Florida, and then the transmission back to fire it's missiles. Wouldn't the target already be gone?

  • A genetics question on dog breeding?

You mate a 100% Labrador Retriever with a 50% Labrador / 50% Golden Retriever mix. The litter consists of 8 puppies. Is there any chance that one of the puppies could be a full 100% Labrador (i.e. only inherited the Labrador genes)?

  • "the piano was drinking"?

The phrases "The piano was drinking" or "the tree carried the world on its' shoulders", etc. have a word in English that describes these sorts of sentences. It's not metaphor and it's not exactly anthropomorphism. Does anyone know the term to describe such phrases? Thanks.

  • Selling a business at what price?

I've always wondered how a small business (e.g. mom and pop) values their business when selling it. Say you own a shoe store that sells $500,000 of shoes a year. Your salary and two employees is $100,000. Holding 'name value' of your store aside, what is the rule of thumb on setting a sale price for the store. One year of gross sales? A percentage thereof? Something else entirely?

    Thanks.
