  • Explaining a Java program - How much detail? What format?

A programming position that I'm applying for requires a sample of past work, so I decided to send a program that I wrote for a mathematics project. However, the idea behind the program is highly theoretical. When describing the program, is okay to just describe the procedure and give an overview of variables, or do I need to explain the theory behind my project as well? Presumably, my prospective employers don't have a background in math theory.

Also, when writing about a Java program, i there a proper format? For example, writing class names in italics, or giving a list of variables.

    Thank you for your help!

  • A question about the interior of a set in Rn. Does this make sense?

Given a set A in Rn, does the following make sense?

    int(A) = int(Rn\ext(A)) = int(int(A) U bd(A)) = int(int(A))

    Thanks!

  • Conflicted on what might be best...any advice?

I was recently accepted into the JET program (Japan Exchange and Teaching); I was also accepted into a M.S. in Mathematics program at a small public college in South Carolina, C of C. I applied to the JET program because I think it would be good for personal and professional development. My main goal is to pursue a Ph.D. in Mathematics, so JET would be for one year only. In addition to being admitted to the C of C program, I was offered a Teaching Assistant position. The pay for JET is more than 40K on average, while the pay for the TA position is roughly 12K (and I would be paying in-state tuition). I'm confused on which path my be best for my future career. I feel that the JET program will be excellent experience, and when I reapply to Ph.D. programs (didn't get into most this time around), I will have something that makes me stand out. However, I also feel that I need to prove that I have what it takes to be successful in advanced math courses (my transcript is strong, but not strong enough I think). In this case, C of C might enable me to prepare for Ph.D. programs. I feel both of these options are excellent, though one is obviously more financially beneficial than the other. If I were to do the JET program, I would start applying to Ph.D. programs again, starting in the Summer. I would then take the GRE Subject test in Mathematics while I'm in Japan. I'm still worried, though, that since I have some courses that I did not do quite as well as I should have will still hinder me in my applications. On the flipside, with JET I would be able to start earning a salary and begin paying off current student loans. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

  • Pregnancy or something else?

At the risk of embarrassing myself, I'm going to give intimate details, because this is something of great importance. Normally, my girlfriend and I use contraceptive and a condom. Neither, of course, is 100% guaranteed to prevent pregnancy. However, the chances are extremely low for each, and I am inclined to think that combining the two reduces the chances (maybe not). But about a month ago, she stopped using contraceptive and since then we have only used a condom. Now, bare with me here as I take on a more intimate tone: I have never ejaculated in her. She is currently 6 days late. So I am wondering what is going on. Could she be pregnant? We haven't had sex in over 2 weeks which may not matter, but I stress again that I have never ejaculated in her and have used a condom. There was one instance, perhaps 3-4 weeks ago where I briefly did not use a condom but then put one on shortly after, never having ejaculated. Could pre-ejaculatory fluids have inserted sperm? I really have no idea. I would like to know what the possibilities are. She doesn't exhibit any of the other "symptoms" of pregnancy. So could it be stress? Going off the contraceptive? Your thoughts...

  • To geneticists or those with extensive knowledge of genetics: what accounts for the following?

I read a comment by someone recently that evolution claims that complex lifeforms with hundreds or thousands of genes evolved from simple lifeforms with merely a few hundred genes. Is it possible for genes to increase in number in evolution? I understand a great deal of evolution and see no reason for it to be untrue, but since I still have a limited knowledge about it, this comment made me think about that limited knowledge. Thus, I appeal to those who have an understanding of evolution from a genetic perspective. What is there an understanding about this change in the number of genes or is it even a valid comment? Thanks.

  • Hello; here is a question for those educated in Islam - violence or peace?

Please cite the Qur'an, not the Hadith, on whether or not Islam contains elements conducive to violence against non-believers. I am not here to proclaim Islam. I am here to foster awareness of Islam, as I have limited knowledge about it. I would like to know what passages, if any, are conducive to violence against those who do not follow Islam. Thus, please do not make a statement that is not backed by evidence. I will disregard it. I do not want personal opinion. Let me say again: please cite the Qur'an (I am familiar with the Hadith). Thank you!

  • Would it be a risk for me to travel to Chiang Mai, Thailand, alone?

I would like to make a trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand, this Spring. It is a city that I have always wanted to visit. I plan to not only explore the city, but also take some cooking courses. However, is it a risk for me to travel alone? I'm a 23 yr old male, just in case that affects your opinion. Please let me know if this seems like a bad idea. If it isn't, I don't want to pass up the opportunity to go. Thanks!

  • For the JET Program application, is it better to put "No" for placement preference?

There is a section that asks the applicant if he or she has a placement preference. The applicant can choose 3. Now, certainly the chances of getting placement based on preference are low, but is there a subtlety here? Does putting yes or no affect one's application? If they see "No" do they view that answer as being flexible and "Yes" as being too picky?

  • How are dishes like curries and stews prepared in professional kitchens?

Some curries take more than 30 minutes to cook thoroughly. There are many stew dishes that take about the same time. So how do restaurant chefs and cooks prepare such dishes for customers? Surely not by order :S

  • I have a frozen salmon filet. The "best by" date is in June, 2011. However, can you help?

I feel there is something not right about the filet. I've been eating salmon for almost my entire life, so I know how it smells. This filet smells normal. The problem is the color. There are some parts of the filet that are not pink. Now, the filet may have been a bit freezer-burned. My question is, is it safe to eat? Are there any discolorations in salmon that hint that it is bad? Thank you for your answers, as I would hate to waste the filet :S

  • How can you tell if a jarred food item is still usable if it doesn't have an expiration date?

I have a jar of black bean sauce (Chinese). I bought it more than 3 yrs ago (yes, how foolish is it to have not used it by now?) and I am wondering if it is usable. There is no expiration date. I wonder if the ingredients used to make it help it stay in good condition for a long time. But how long is too long?

  • Should I follow my dreams? Or am I being to realistic?

I am currently an undergraduate student in computer science, and frankly, I am not sure why I got into the program. I started off as a math major and enjoyed it, but I did not see a future in it. During my study in computer science however, it has been the reverse: future career prospects are plentiful, but I am not enjoying it that much. There are time when I do enjoy the study of computer science, as it can be exciting. Overall though, I find myself disliking it more than not. Now, I have left the study before, but came back to it, as I disliked what I had switched to even more. Now, I am contemplating switching again. Only this time, I would like to switch to physics. Ever since I was young I have always been interested in astronomy; I wanted to study physics in college en route to astronomy. An unfortunate series of events (which are too heavy in detail to explain here) denied me the chance to study physics. I did take introductory physics and I did well. But I still do not know whether or not I would be successful in physics, despite being confident that I will have the interest. I will definitely talk to some professors, but I wanted to get some views on my plans first. Should I follow my dreams and pursue physics? Or should I be realistic and just continue on my current path? Thank you.

  • Would this be proper Japanese etiquette? ?

I have a meeting today with a Japanese professor. I am wondering if I could use the following phrases:

    Sumimasen

    Kato-sensei desuka?

And then flow into greetings. Would this be proper? Is this polite enough (i.e. may I say this to a professor)? If not, what would be proper? Thanks!

  • Teaching in English in China and Taiwan...what's it like?

To those who have taught English in China or Taiwan: what's it like? Would you suggest an aspiring ESL teacher to teach in either of these places or would you advise against it? Why?

    Thank you for your time.

  • Teaching English as a foreign language: China or Japan

I am an aspiring ESL teacher. China and Japan are the two places I would like to teach. What is the future outlook for ESL teachers in each? Also, to those who have experience teaching in either of these, what are some good and bad aspects of each? Disregarding the fact that language ability is not required, which country do you think would need more language knowledge? In other words, would a strong knowledge of the local language be more important in China or Japan? Thank you for your time.

  • What do you think the future outlook for teaching English in China, Japan, and Taiwan is

Also, I've read that many ESL jobs (with the exception of Japan) don't require knowledge of the local language. Is this true? For instance, if one knows Chinese and is at the beginner's level in Japanese, would he or she have trouble finding an ESL job in Japan? Thank you for your time.

  • Aspiring ESL teacher...think you can help me out?

I'm strongly interested in TEFL in East Asia, in particular China and Japan. I'm still an undergraduate, so I'm deciding on what foreign language to pursue; I'm debating between Chinese and Japanese. I would love to teach in either country, but I'm not sure how much language proficiency would be needed. Also, I don't know which has a better job outlook. I think I'll be able to study both Chinese and Japanese in the future, but for now, I just want to focus on one. Do you have any suggestions (preferably from experience)? Do you have any tips on making such a decision? Thanks.

  • What is it like to live in Chengdu, China?

I am a college student researching study abroad destinations in East Asia. Right now, I'm torn between Japan and Chengdu, China. If you have been to or preferably lived in Chengdu, what can you say about it? What are some great things about it? What, if any, are some bad things about it? Why should/shouldn't someone spend considerable time there? I look forward to your reply!

  • American students in Japan...what's it like?

To those that have experience living/studying/working in Japan, I'm wondering if you can shed some light. I've always wanted to go to Japan, and now that I am in college, I am going to study abroad there. But I still have some fears. For instance, I feel as though I will be avoided by the locals, since I'm a foreigner and I don't fit the blond-haired, blue-eyed American stereotype. Also, since the culture is totally different, I'm afraid that I might struggle adjusting to the customs; the last thing I want to do is offend someone. I plan on attaining at least intermediate-level Japanese...would that be sufficient? If anyone can address these issues, elaborating on such fears (valid or invalid), that would be great. Thanks.
