  • Trouble with Mandarin Chinese tones?

I'm having trouble distinguishing between tones, I know the five tones, but I can't really tell when other people use them, it sounds the same to me for the most part. And I'm struggling with my pronunciation I'm just having a really hard time with.

I can speak fluent Japanese and I have decent Korean not the best since I don't use it much. So grammar is no problem for me.

Does anyone have any useful tips for dealing with tones and pronunciation?

  • Should I take German or Russian?

I have the choice to take French, Spanish, Chinese, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic, German or Russian I've ruled out the others and have it done to Russian or German, but I can't choose between the two.

I can speak English, Japanese, Mongolian and know a enough Korean to get me by but it's a bit rusty. So I'm not worried about learning a new alphabet or difficult grammar, I'm confident I can learn any language, I'm just torn over what one to take.

I love both Russian and German culture, literature, and history.

PS. I can't take both my class schedule just won't allow it.

  • Learning 2 languages at the same time?

I'll have some free time this fall and thought about taking classes at my local community college to learn to speak another language, I can already speak English and Japanese (I hold a degree in it) I love languages and want to speak as many as possible and I saw that the local college had classes available for Russian and Mandarin Chinese,

I'm having a hard time picking between the the two so I thought why not take both! But I'm worried it'll be hard to learn 2 new language at the same time. Does any one advice on this? Have you learned more then one language at a time?

  • What country do you think has the most neglected literature?

We all know about England, France, Russia and The United States and the amazing literature they've produced, but what about all the other countries out there? what county do you think is ignored and deserves more attention?

I personally think Japan deserves more attention for all of its great writers like Yukio Mishima, Yasunari Kawabata, Junichiro Tanizaki, Kobo Abe, Osamu Dazai, Natsume Soseki, Ryunosuke Akutagawa, Eiji Yoshikawa, Kafu Nagai, Lady Murasaki Shikibu, Ihara Saikaku, Matsuo Basho, Kenzaburo Ōe, Shusaku Endo, Shohei Ooka, Masuji Ibuse, Naoya Shiga, Kyoka Izumi, Kunikida Doppo, and Mori Ōgai.

Chances are you've only heard of one or two if any of these writers and that's a shame because they are all great writers who can hold there own against any of France's, England's, America's or Russia's writers.

So i was wondering what other nation is a diamond in the rough?

  • Who do you think should win the Nobel prize in literature?

Please only name living authors, otherwise we would need to have a few hundred Nobel prizes to hand out posthumously.
