Baby Jude's mummy!!!

Favorite Answers26%
Answers585

My name is Sara and I live in Scotland with my partner Paul and our beautiful baby boy Jude who was born on the 12th December 2009. I have a great life. I work part time (3 days a week) as a primary school teacher. I love my job and I love being a mummy so I feel like I am lucky enough to enjoy the best of both worlds. I answer more than I ask here and I try hard to be honest and non-judgemental. Sometimes I can't help but be sarcastic in the baby names section though - people want to call their kids some awful things!!!!

  • Privacy settings on Facebook photos?

Tonight I noticed my boyfriend's mum had changed her profile picture to a pic of my son from my 'mobile uploads' album, she had not been tagged in that photo. How was that possible? When I go into other people's pics I can't see a way to do that? She said she was able to download it from my album into her own and then use it from there. I really hate the idea that this can be done with my photos and was wandering if there is a way to block people from doing this? Btw, I have no problem with my boyfriend's mum or anything, I'm a teacher in a small town and would hate for any of the photos of me out having a drink to be perhaps used this way (I have double checked and I seem to have applied maximum security settings to my whole profile!) Thanks people!

  • iPad users - how do you delete an app that won't download?

You cannot do it the usual way, no cross appears when you hold it down so it can't be deleted. I'm a new iPad user so I will need step-by-step instructions if this is a complicated process! Many thanks!!

  • Why won't my baby say "mama"?

    Hey folks,

My baby boy Jude will be one year old next Sunday. He says a few words in context now. These words are

    dog

    dada

    hiya

    ba-ba (bye bye)

car/ball - he gets these mixed up sometimes

He also says "Jude" - he sometimes says it over and over when he is playing. I take him to Sing and Sign and he is using baby signing at mealtimes/snacktimes.

Based on this I think his communication seems to be coming along normally apart from one thing - he doesn't ever say "mama". Does anyone have any idea why this could be? Was anyone else's child the same? He knows who I am because if you say, "Where's mummy?" to him he looks at me or crawls over. I am not worried about this at all, but I am desperate to hear him say "mama"!

  • Advice on internet security/virus protection?

    Hi all,

My McAfee internet security is about to expire and I was wandering what different/cheaper/free good alternatives there were out there? By free I mean free all the time, not just a free trial for a month or something. Whatever I download needs to be easy to use, I'm no computer genius!!! Also, how will I delete the McAfee programme from my computer? I tried to figure out how to do this earlier and had no clue!

    Many thanks folks!

  • Any tips for difficult nappy changes?

My baby boy is 8.5 months old and is going through a phase of hating having his nappy changed. He cries as soon as you lay him on his back and then rolls over and crawls away! It's an absolute nightmare trying to change nappies and each change is a battle of wills. Things I have tried so far are - giving him a toy to play with (doesn't work), singing (sometimes works), borrowing a toy arch thing to put over him to play with whilst being changed (worked to start with, doesn't now). Does anyone have any tips or ideas on how to change a wriggly baby who hates having his nappy changed?

  • How long did it take your baby to master the art of crawling?

My baby boy is 8.5 months and today for the first time he crawled properly on all fours. He has done it several times today now but he only manages a short distance before he either loses balance or gives up and reverts to his usual method of travel which involves him doing a sort of donkey kick with his two back legs and then launching himself forward with his arms. How long roughly did it take your little one to become really confident and able at crawling? I'm hoping it won't take Jude long now he knows he can do it!

  • Has anyone done 'Sing and Sign' classes with their baby or used baby signing?

My baby is 7 and a half months old. We have the opportunity to join classes locally and they aren't ridiculously expensive either. They do clash with Jude's morning nap time which makes me apprehensive about saying yes (thought of grumpy baby at class is putting me off) but I would love it if he could learn some basic signs that would help him to communicate his needs. I was wandering if anyone else had done these with their baby, either at classes or using their own signs or ones from books? How old were your babies when you started? I was wandering if Jude was a little young for it perhaps. I'm undecided about whether to go and if others shared their experiences it might help me make up my mind! Many thanks!

  • My baby hates getting his teeth brushed!?

My baby boy is 7 months old and has 4 teeth already. When the first one came through when he was about 5 months old I bought him a little toothbrush and baby toothpaste and started brushing his emerging tooth every morning and night. To start with he loved it, he enjoyed chewing the brush for a while and then I would take it and brush his tooth and he would open his mouth and let me and seemed to enjoy the whole thing. This lasted until about 3 weeks ago when for no apparent reason he decided he hated getting his teeth brushed. He still enjoys playing with the toothbrush but now he prefers chewing the handle rather than the brush part and if I try to brush his teeth he simply clamps his mouth tight shut and won't let me anywhere near his teeth. I'm worried about his teeth becoming decayed because they're not getting brushed properly. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions on how I could brush his teeth, help him get over this etc? I'm lost at the moment! I have tried showing him me brushing my teeth and I am currently getting him to open his mouth by ticking him so he laughs and then putting the brush in and giving the teeth a quick brush but he becomes VERY irate when the brush goes in and I am scared I will scare him away from the toothbrush for life if I keep ambushing him with it like this but I don't know what else to do!

  • Any ideas on how to get my baby to drink water?

My baby boy is nearly 6 months old. I have been trying to get him to drink some water for the past month or so, I have especially been really trying the past week or so when he has his tea (we only started having tea last week, he drinks formula with his breakfast and does not yet eat lunch) and I have been trying throughout the day when the weather is hot. I have bought 2 sippy cups and to start with Jude has shown some interest in the cups and was putting them in his mouth and attempting to drink. However he HATES the water and was just spitting it out. He now realises the sippy cups contain water and won't have anything to do with them! I tried letting him drink from a cup without a lid (my friend's baby's 'doidy cup') and again he spat out the water although he seemed a bit more interested in this. Any ideas on how to get my son to drink water? I am NOT looking to replace his formula intake I would simply like him to have a little to drink with his tea and throughout the day on warm days. I do not want to give him juice of any kind. Any advice or help is appreciated, thanks! xx

  • How can I get the smell of cigarette smoke out my baby swing?

I have been given a second hand baby swing by one of the parents of a child in my class. It is in very good condition as she says her baby didn't like it and I know that it costs about £100 to buy it in the shops. The only problem is that this woman is a smoker and the baby swing stinks of smoke. The seat pad cannot be removed to be cleaned so that is not an option. So far I have washed the seat with a solution of water and washing detergent, then went over this with a solution of fabric conditioner and water, sprayed it with a ton of Febreeze and left it in my garden all day yesterday to dry in the fresh air. It is smelling a whole lot better but the odour of cigarette smoke is still there. Any suggestions as to how I could get rid of it for good? If I continue to wash/Febreeze/air it outside will the smell go away? It seems a waste of a good baby swing but I refuse to use it until it doesn't smell!! I have read a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% water will eliminate odours - has anyone used this method with success? Any suggestions are much appreciated! Thanks!

  • Problem with cracked nipples.?

    Hi everyone,

My baby son Jude is fifteen days old. I have been breastfeeding him for thirteen days. I had a very long labour and a hard birth and he wouldn't feed for the first two days he was here. He had to take a bottle of special formula in the hospital given to him by syringe and I expressed colostrum for the first two days. On the third day he started breastfeeding and I guess I was just so delighted that I haven't focussed on my latch closely enough as my nipples (especially my right nipple) are really sore. My right nipple actually has a 'hole' in it that oozes constantly and sticks to my breastpad which is agony. I am really trying to work on getting the correct latch every time Jude feeds and am using Lansinoh cream constantly! I found an article online about using saline baths which I am going to try today and I have also expressed out of my right breast into a sterile cup I brought home from hospital and will try and feed Jude from the cup instead of that breast. I am hoping that this will give the right breast time to heal. If I am still having problems I have the number of a breastfeeding supporter that can come and help. I just wanted to know if there is anything else I can do to help this situation. At the moment it is bearable to feed from my left breast but so incredibly sore when I try to feed from the right breast. There have been moments in the past few days when I have been so tempted to send my partner out for formula and I really need help before I crack. I really want to breastfeed but I also want to enjoy my baby and I'm dreading feeding time just now. Any help or advice is much appreciated. Many thanks xx

  • Problem with Windows Firewall?

I'm not sure what has happened but every time I go onto a new internet page I am getting a pop-up from Windows Firewall. The one that appeared when I went to ask this question says "To help protect your computer, Windows Firewall has blocked some features of this program. Do you want to block this suspicious software?" Then the only option I can click on is 'Enable Protection'. It is REALLY annoying. Windows Firewall has never done this before so why has it started happening now? I wasn't even aware I had Windows Firewall, I have McAfee security so doesn't that have a firewall? Please can someone tell me how to get rid of these annoying Windows Firewall pop-ups. I am a total dunce when it comes to computers so I will need very clear step-by-step instructions on how to do this! Many thanks!

  • Help - what has he done to my desktop screen?

My partner who is not very good with computers has done something to my laptop! He downloaded and played 'Football Manager' (not sure if this is part of the problem?) I have not a clue what he was doing or what has happened but my desktop screen has 'shrunk' and there are two thick black bars about an inch and a half wide at the left and right side of the screen now - this affects all programmes - internet explorer, word etc - they all have these bars at the side as if they have been minimised a bit, the font and everything is smaller and it is SO annoying! I have tried to fix this but I just don't know how! I hope I have explained myself clearly enough and someone can give me instructions to fix it! I'm not great with computers myself so step-by-step please if you know what to do! Thank you!

  • Baby names for my boy - my choice or my partners? What to do??? Opinions please!?

    Hi everyone,

My baby boy is due in just 15 days time (I'm soooo excited!) and me and my partner still haven't finally decided on a name! We have two possibilities - my favourite which is Noah and my partner's favourite which is Jude. My partner doesn't really like the name Noah but he loves the name Jude. I'm coming round to it and it's actually really growing on me. We're both big Beatles fans and the name came to us listening to the song 'Hey Jude'. However I hate the fact that some people may associate the name with rubbish actor and all round sleaze Jude Law! Anyway, my partner has worked nearly every weekend and countless late nights since we found out I was pregnant to help make as much money as possible so that I can be off work as long as I can. He's been wonderfully supportive throughout my whole pregnancy, putting up with my moods and exhaustion and taking over lots of the housework as well as renovating the garden and plastering and decorating our nursery. I feel like choosing 'his' name would be a lovely way to thank him for his support, my partner doesn't ever ask for much and I know he would be so touched. The thing is I will always prefer the name Noah! Has anyone ever gone with their partner's choice of name and regretted it? What do people think of the name Jude? Our baby's full name would be Jude Michael Simpson if that helps at all! No nasty comments please!

  • Ideas for baby shower games?

I live in Scotland where baby showers are not the norm. I work as a Primary School teacher and my last day with my class who are all aged 6-7 is on Wednesday. The class are keen to have a party for me leaving. I told them that in America a party for someone having a baby is called a 'baby shower' and you play 'baby themed' games and they seemed really keen on this idea (that is after they had laughed very hard at the term 'shower' - I had to explain that the baby was showered with love and gifts and didn't go in an actual shower!!!) Now OBVIOUSLY I am not expecting presents from the children in my class (although I know I will get some) but they have all made me their own card (which I'm not supposed to know about!) which they will present to me at the party. What I am looking for is ideas for baby-themed games or activities that young children could play or participate in. I am going to have 'normal' children's party games (musical bumps etc) in between all the 'baby games' as I want the party to be about them too. So far I have thought of getting the children to bring in their own baby photos and playing 'guess the baby' and the children guessing the baby's weight at birth. Any other ideas? Having never been to a shower I'm struggling with ideas and any help would be appreciated!!! Many thanks!

  • Baby in breech position - a few questions!?

I had my 32 week midwife appointment today (I'm 32w4d) and she said my baby was breech. She said he still had time to turn and not to get anxious. I was wondering how many other people this had happened to out there - did your baby turn before they were born? Did you do anything to aid them turning? If your baby didn't turn were you still able to give birth naturally or did you have to have a c-section? All answers and experiences welcome! Thank you! xx

  • 32 weeks - feeling ill or just stress?

Hi everyone, I'm 32w1d and over the past couple of weeks I've started to feel quite ill. I'm already on iron tablets because my last blood tests showed I had become anaemic. Before I found this out I had simply thought that my morning sickness had been coming back - I was feeling quite sick from time to time and sometimes quite faint. To start with the iron tablets seemed to work but now I feel like that again but worse. I'm sleeping loads (I'm off on holiday just now) and I'm feeling sick and faint again. I've also started to get heart palpitations from time to time, my heart beats so fast it feels like it's going to burst out of my chest and I have to sit down until it passes. However I do have a very stressful situation going on at work right now and I'm wondering if my feeling ill is a symptom of that. Basically I'm a primary school teacher and I love my job, I'd been feeling quite sad actually about leaving my class, the kids I have this year are lovely. Anyway there is this woman at my work who has been off sick for a very long time. She was basically bullying a couple of members of staff by befriending them and telling them that my head teacher and other managers had been saying things about their competency as a teacher. One girl suffered this for 18 months and never said anything and really had her confidence damaged. She tried it with a 3rd teacher who went straight to the head teacher to ask if there was a problem and the whole thing came to light after that. This teacher should have been struck off for gross misconduct but she said she had mental health problems and was signed off sick instead and now she is coming back as my maternity cover and I have to team teach with her in the time up to my maternity leave (5 weeks starting next week). I am really dreading this. The people who were affected by the bullying were good friends of mine and I feel so stressed and awkward being put in this situation. I spoke to my headteacher and she has been wonderful about the situation and is very supportive but it's not her decision, the council have decided that my maternity cover is the perfect way for this teacher to return to work and there is nothing we can do about it. I have never not wanted to go to work before and now I am totally dreading it. I can't afford to take my maternity leave any earlier and besides, I don't want to let the kids down by leaving early so that's not an option.

So my question is - based on my symptoms what do you think is wrong with me? Has my anaemia got worse or is stress making these symptoms appear? Do I have any rights as a pregnant employee that will help in this situation? I have a midwife appointment on Monday and I will discuss everything with her but some advice meantime would be so appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to read and answer. xxx

  • When to stop exercising?

I will be 28 weeks pregnant on Thursday. I have managed to maintain a fitness routine throughout my pregnancy however it was much easier in the summer when I was off for six weeks and I could go to special pregnancy fitness classes such as yoga and aqua-natal. Since I've been back at work I can't go to these classes anymore as they're through the day but I try to make it to the gym about twice a week. I'm finding it harder and harder work though and lately I've been getting braxton hicks contractions for just about the whole time I exercise. They're not painful just uncomfortable and I can exercise through them no problem. But is this my body telling me to slow down? Or should I keep exercising as long as I can - I've heard that the fitter you are the more it'll help you in labour (you won't tire so easily and you'll be physically stronger for pushing and holding positions for labouring in etc). My gym offer a 6 month membership suspension so even if I suspend my membership I intend to try and maintain a level of fitness by going walking whenever I can. When did other ladies stop exercising? Any advice/information is appreciated. Many thanks!
