I am a paralegal in California, so most of my legal knowledge is based on that experience. I have also lived in many other states, working as a journalist and in the law. As a journalist, I covered everything from features and education to Tennessee's first execution in decades. Legally, I worked in medical malpractice, personal injury, mass litigation like VIOXX and rep'ing victims of childhood sexual abuse by priests, as well as real estate/ business law, collections, drunk driving and criminal, and post-conviction/ Habeas Corpus. I'm also a California Notary Public. Since I am a paralegal (and since this is the internet), if I don't tell you to get a lawyer, please do so anyway. I am not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice. I also occasionally answer cooking questions, because I'm a pretty good cook -- or at least I watch the food channel a lot. I also live on the beach in San Diego, I am engaged to a local entrepreneur, and we have a cat named Nellie.
Unofficial poll: "man and wife" vs. "husband and wife"?
OK, this is just curiosity on my part, but I'd like to know what other people think. When you got married (or if you're planning a wedding, when you get married) did you or will you have the minister or JOP pronounce you "husband and wife" or "man and wife"?
Personally, I'm going for "husband" ... I figure he was a man before we got married and he'll be a man and a husband after. If my status changes, so should his, right? I guess "man and wife" seems more old-fashioned, like it's a patriarchal, ownership type of thing.
Your thoughts?
Thanks in advance for answering.
25 AnswersWeddings1 decade agoHelp us with this honeymoon decision?
Hi, thanks for reading.
My fiance and I won tickets to an all-inclusive resort. We did the thing where you listen to a sales pitch and get a prize.
We can choose between a few different resorts in Mexico, the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic, and we ruled out Mexico ... so we'd like to know, between DR and the Bahamas, which is best?
In the Bahamas, our choices are Fortuna Beach, and in DR, it's either La Romana or Cabarete.
The resorts themselves look about the same, quality-wise, and we've been reading tripadvisor and other websites with people's reviews. But as far as just the islands themselves, which would you prefer or recommend, and why?
Thanks!

3 AnswersOther - Caribbean1 decade agoCan someone help me embroider my wedding veil?
Hi! I'm getting married next year and I am embroidering my own veil. I have already bought the style I want with a silk border, and I want to embroider the border and possibly some of the inside with stars and other shapes.
Can someone help me with this? I need a pattern to follow, if there even is such a thing with this type of sewing ... I already do cross-stitching a lot and am familiar with it, so if you can help me with this, it would greatly reduce my chances of ruining my veil, lol.
Any expert help would be appreciated. Please provide email or IM information so I can ask you questions later!
2 AnswersHobbies & Crafts1 decade agoDeveloping and marketing non-alcoholic mixers?
I need to find out the rules about developing and selling my own beverage -- a non-alcoholic mixer. My fiancee and I run a bartending company, and obviously we can't sell alcohol because we don't have the liquor license, but I want to develop and market our own mixers -- cosmos, mojitos, margaritas ... you get the idea.
My question is, how do I go about getting the right permits, etc? Do I even need anything? Can I just make something in my kitchen, patent it, and start selling/ distributing it?
I am in California, if that helps. Please provide websites and/ or legal citations and codes. I just need a place to start from. Thanks in advance for your help.
5 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoCan someone convert an RV for me?
I know of systems that can convert diesel engines to vegetable oil (frymobile) engines, and I want to find someone who can do it for me. I am also looking for a way to make the electrical part of the RV work on solar or other alternative energy.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
1 AnswerGreen Living1 decade agoObama t-shirts?
Happy Friday, everyone.
Does anyone know where I can buy Obama t-shirts and other stuff, preferably where it will somehow go back into his campaign?
His official website has literally everything on back order and says it will be weeks before anything can be mailed out. I want to support him and his campaign, but I want a shirt, too. :)
Does anyone know of a good site for this? Maybe one of the unions or groups that support him? Many thanks in advance!
3 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoSurvey ... very quick, please give me your opinion ...?
I am the editor of a newsletter for a paralegal association. One page is entirely devoted to a large calendar. In the past, it has been events held by the association only, and when I took over, I added holidays and other events of interest, for example, Mardi Gras, Groundhog Day, Superbowl Sunday, April Fool's Day, Chinese New Year. I also included several religious holidays, which were Christian, Jewish, Muslim and even one Hindu religious celebration. Then I was reprimanded for not being "PC enough."
My question is, do you think it's offensive to put religious holidays in a secular newsletter, if all of the religious holidays are included? Or does "PC" mean to not mention any religions at all?
Full disclosure ... I am not religious at all. I did not list these holidays or events with any sort of opinions or anything. All I used was the name of the holiday and a small clip-art icon, like a cross for Epiphany, a star of David for Tu B'Schvat (a Jewish observance).
6 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoAnti-itch medication or natural treatment for cats?
My sweet kitty Nellie got fleas from sitting near the door, where there's a crack under it. (She's an indoor kitty.)
We took care of the fleas themselves, we gave her a collar, we sprayed her and used anti-flea stuff on the carpet, etc., but it's been a couple of weeks and she has a sore spot on her back from itching. It feels (under her fur) like a scab, and when we pet her on a certain spot, she tenses up, and if we do it too hard, she meows and even bites a little.
Is there any good natural remedy or over-the-counter medicine we can put on her itchy spot? Thanks!

5 AnswersElections1 decade agoTiny plastic dealie on the gear shift?
I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am, it has a gear shift in between the seats, with a plastic lever you push in to shift gears.
The problem is, the little piece of plastic snapped or something and fell out. I've been just keeping it in the cup holder next to the gear shift, and just sticking it in when I have to shift, but it's getting very annoying doing that every time ... especially since I'm sure it's about 25 cents worth of plastic.
Anyone know where I can find a replacement? Or, if this has happened to you, do you have a better recommendation, so I can ghetto-rig the gear shift so I don't have to do this every time?
Thanks.
3 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoCould you pass the citizenship test?
I posted this earlier, strictly to find out how many average Americans knew this stuff, and I got a ton of hate mail and kind of confusing answers.
To be clear, I do NOT hate America, I do NOT think the test to become a citizen should be an easy one, and I am NOT offering any judgment or opinion on anything whatsoever. I'm just trying to see who can answer these questions.
So anyway ... They redesigned the test that immigrants have to take as part of the process of becoming an American citizen.
Can you answer all of these correctly? The answers are posted at the bottom -- don't cheat!

5. What are two rights only for United States citizens?
6. The Federalist Papers supported the passage of the U.S. Constitution. Name one of the writers.
7. What territory did the United States buy from France in 1803?
8. Who was President during World War I?
9. Name one U.S. territory.
10. Why does the flag have 13 stripes?
6 AnswersGovernment1 decade agoWhere can I purchase a soda fountain like a fast food restaurant?
I know someone has to sell those things ... you know, the hookup and the spout, and it's hooked to a box of syrup for Coke, Diet Coke, etc. Anyone who has ever worked in a restaurant, particularly fast food, knows what I'm talking about.
Can you just buy them, say from a Costco or something? If I get the fountain itself from a restaurant supply shop or something, how will I get the syrup refills?
Any help would be appreciated. My goal is to just get Diet Coke, if that helps.
6 AnswersNon-Alcoholic Drinks1 decade agoMemorial for Grandma?
I am looking for a great way to memorialize and honor my grandmother, who is sick with lung cancer and was given just a few months left by the doctors. She is a wonderful and fiery little lady!
When my aunt passed away of liver disease a few years ago, my way of honoring her was to plant a tree by the Anacostia River (very polluted area) which simultaneously cleansed the river and nourished a beautiful tree. This was my grandmother's (the same one) daughter and she loved the idea -- she even got a plaque and a photo of the tree with her late daughter's name and dates. I'm thinking of doing something similar, but I don't want to do the same thing twice -- plus, I want to honor Grams in a different way.
Any suggestions would be appreciated! And something that I can do while she's still alive to show her how much she means to me would also be appreciated.
5 AnswersOther - Society & Culture1 decade agoHow long does a lung cancer patient have to live without treatment?
My grandmother was diagnosed with lung cancer, it has grown from the size of a grape to the size of a golf ball in a month. She won't do any chemo/radiation or surgery, because she wants the time she has left to be good, and the docs said she has a year left. BUT ... first, if it's grown that fast, how can she have a year? And every instance of lung cancer I've ever heard of has had the patients die much sooner ... like Peter Jennings was given six months and lived like two weeks, and another I read about was given a year and died less than three months later. How long does she have, realistically?
