  • Would you let a car seller take a pic of your license?

I am selling my car, and plan to meet possible buyers in a shopping center near my house. Because we won't be at my house, I won't have access to a photocopier. So, I plan to take a photo of the person's license before they test drive the car. Does this seem reasonable, or would this make you walk away from the sale?

  • How can you tell if a device needs an IP address?

I'm guessing if it operates at layer 2 of the OSI model, it doesn't need an IP address. Am I right?

I am wondering if I were to add an IPS to a network I am designing for class, would it need to be assigned an IP address?

  • Can you help me with my network design?

I'm working on a network design for a class project, and I am not sure I am building it right. My network has to be able to sustain seven locations with five departments in each location. Six locations have 200 people, one has 400 people. I decided to use switched Ethernet for my network.

In class, the professor divided the network into seven subnets, presumably to use at the locations. If my understanding is correct (and I am not sure that it is), that means each department needs to be on one LAN. Otherwise, we would need to divide the network into more subnets, right? Or is that wrong?

I believe that every time you add a router, you have to divide the network into more segments. Since we already divided it into seven, it seems like we wouldn't be able to divide it again unless we use variable length subnetting. (I'm not sure what that is, and I don't think we can use it for this project.)

So, my location has one router, which seems like too few for 200 employees.

We have to submit network diagrams of one location, the HQ, and the entire network. I've been playing around with it and researching through Google and other places and I have created the two diagrams linked here.

I'm not done, so there are no IP addresses assigned yet, but I want to know if I am on the right track or if I am completely off. Any comments/advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

  • What is the difference between grandstand and ground admission seats at an Indy race?

Indy is coming to Baltimore and I was interested in going to the race, but the grandstand tickets are sold out. Ground admission tickets are still available. What are they, and what do you get with that ticket?

  • How do I show proof of rental car insurance in Virginia?

I was pulled over for speeding last week. I was driving my rental car, but didn't have the contract with me. The officer informed me that I needed the contract with me and gave me a ticket for the rental car not having insurance.

I did have insurance, I just didn't have the proof of it with me. I believe that I should be able to show proof of insurance to get out of this citation, but who do I show it to? How long do I have to show it?

  • When should I buy the alcohol for my wedding?

My wedding is in about four weeks, and I am wondering when I should purchase the alcohol. I know how much alcohol I need based on our counts, but I am wondering when the best time to purchase would be. I would rather not buy it the weekend of the wedding, as we will have a lot going on.

Is four weeks too far out to start buying it? Any alcohol I buy for the wedding would be kept in a cool, dry place that doesn't get much sunlight. (No direct sunlight would hit the bottles.)

  • Car starts, but won't jump start?

My fiancee's car starts and runs fine, with no issues. A few weeks ago, however, her sister's car was left at our place while she was out of the country. While she was gone, her battery died and the car would not start.

We attempted to jump it with my fiancee's car, and it wouldn't start. Later, my friend used his truck to jump it and the car started. So, now we're wondering if we need to replace my fiancee's battery, since she couldn't jump another car with it.

Also, if it helps, my fiancee and her sister have the same car (make and model) though her sister's is one year newer and a higher-end model.

  • What Graduate Gemologist Would You Choose?

I purchased an engagement ring setting and a loose diamond and had the diamond set in the ring from the place where I purchased the loose diamond. The ring came with a free appraisal from the jewelry store, which from my research is usually useless -- overinflated.

I plan to have it appraised by a graduate gemologist (the jeweler wasn't a GG), mainly for insurance purposes... also I want to make sure the diamond I paid for is the one that I received. I'm pretty certain it is because on the way it looked in the loupe both before and after setting compared to the plot.

I have narrowed it down to two GGs that I like. One of the jewelers I worked extensively with when I was deciding on both the setting and the diamond has a GG he works exclusively with. The GG charges $150 for an appraisal, and only conducts appraisals on the first Thursday of the month. But other than that and the jewelers recommendation, I don't know much about this person. I can't even find testimonials from his customers, but the reviews of the jeweler are positive.

The second GG I found through the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers. A check of his website tells exactly what he does during the appraisal, essentially how he conducts it and what he uses to determine the value.

He has testimonials on his site, and seems to offer more information on what he actually does. But, he's $180 per hour (it shouldn't take more than an hour, he says but he will give me a quote before starting) and he's much farther from my house.

My sister says go with the cheaper/closer guy, but is it worth it to spend the extra $30 for someone who is more up front about what they do? Which one should I chose?

  • In a three-stone setting, what color/clarity rating should I get compared to the side diamonds?

I found a great deal on an engagement ring setting -- the one my girlfriend absolutely loved -- a two months ago and purchased it without the center diamond. It is a white gold ring with 11 stones: 8 .20ct diamonds, 2 .35ct diamonds, and the center diamond will be .75ct.

The two side diamonds are G/SI.

I located several diamonds within my price range that are E-F/VS1-VS2. But, through my whole diamond searching process, I noticed that you can't tell the difference between a E-F diamond and a G/H diamond unless they're side by side. So, would the E-F center stone make the side stones appear more yellow?

In other words, would the higher-color-rated center stone make you more aware of the lower-color-rated side stones?

I don't really want to shell out the extra money, if it will make the side stones look worse.

  • Why is everyone questioning Dez Bryant's character?

I know he failed to disclose his relationship with Deion Sanders to the NCAA. But, was there something else that is making teams question his character? I mean, has he been in trouble beyond this off the field?

I also heard that he doesn't always give 100% effort. Is this true, and if so, is that coupled with his suspension the reason his character is called into question? Or, is there something I don't know?

  • How do I get more Tumblr followers?

I recently joined Tumblr and basically use it to post random stuff I find funny or random things that pop in my head or come from my life. (mikejsmith.tumblr.com)

I'm looking for followers but I have no idea how to go about it. I've looked at some of the other questions and articles about how to gain followers, and most recommend following people and some will follow you back.

My problem is, I'm having a hard time finding people who use tumblr the same way I do. I've looked in the directory, and have followed a few people, but most of them are specific in focus, not just random humor. Does another directory that exists somewhere that I could find people who use tumblr the same way I do (more personal/random usage)?

  • What is a respectable diamond size for an engagement ring?

After researching my girlfriend's tastes, I found the perfect setting for her. Long story short, I found the setting online for a third of the cost it was in the store. Therefore, I'd like to purchase the ring online.

I'm still diamond shopping and am looking to get the best price. I'm wondering what you think are respectable ratings for a diamond. I'm looking for ratings for each of the 4 Cs.

Also, the ring is a three-stone Trellis setting. What size side stones should I get in relation to the center diamond? For example, if the center diamond is 75 points, the side diamonds should be no bigger than X points.)

I'd prefer it if you stuck to the absolute lowest rating you find acceptable. (For example, a 50 point diamond is the smallest acceptable diamond in my opinion.) Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • How do I measure my bathroom for an exhaust fan?

In my bathroom, the shower and the toilet are separated from the vanity and sink by a door. When measuring for an exhaust fan, do I count only the dimensions from the small room containing the toilet and shower, or do I include the dimensions from both rooms?

I know the calculation for determining what size fan I need, I only need to know whether or not to include the whole bathroom or just that little room.

  • Why don't you like Juan Montoya?

I've noticed a lot of people don't like Juan Pablo Montoya. He was booed heavily during driver introductions, and people cheered when he was passed for the lead. Why don't people like him?

If you don't like him, please explain why you don't.

PS This is a legitimate question.

  • What happens when you go to jail?

I always wondered what happens to your stuff if you're single and get locked up. For example, if you rent an apartment, and get locked up, what happens to the apartment and your stuff? Do they put it in storage?

What happens to your bills? Since you're not making any money, how can you stay current on your credit card bills, etc?

Does anyone know? Who should I ask?

  • What programs are compatible with the Flip?

I'm thinking about getting a Flip UltraHD. I've been reading that the Flip's video format was incompatible with Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere. First, is this true? Is there any easy/smiple way to convert the files so they are compatible?

If not, what programs are compatible and can be used to successfully edit Flip vids?

  • How do I tell my friend its a scam?

A coworker/friend of mine received an opportunity from Primerica. She wants me to attend a meeting. I knew it was a multi-level marketing company, but didn't know much more than that. After doing my homework, it seems more like a pyramid scheme. I have extensive experience with these types of things as I used to cover these for a media company earlier in my career.

My question is, how do I break the news to her? She seems really upbeat about it, and seems to be trusting of the Primerica people. I don't want to burst her bubble, but I feel like I need to protect her. How do I cushion the blow? What's the best way to tell her?

  • Conspiracy in Dallas?

This is more of a hypothetical question than something I actually believe, but I'd like to know what you think.

With Wade Phillips being the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, do you think Jason Garrett is not giving 100% in making sure the team has success?

I mean, Garrett will not be head coach of the Cowboys so long as the team is successful under Phillips. So, what incentive does Garrett have to really try to win?

To me, Garrett seems like a standup guy, incapable of doing such a thing. But, it's interesting to think about, since if he is successful, Phillips is too, resulting in a contract extension for Phillips, thus keeping Garrett in Offensive Coordinator land, unless he leaves to go to another team.

    Your thoughts?
