  • Is there a Hamiltonian circuit on a chess board with a lame rook, with equal # of horizontal and vertical steps?

You have a 8x8 chessboard, and a "lame rook" that can only move 1 square at a time, horizontally and vertically only. Starting in a corner (or anywhere, really), can the piece make a circuit, visiting every square only once, other than returning to where it started. So it needs 32 horizontal movers, and 32 vertical.

I suspect the answer is no, but I can't prove it. I can prove it can't be done on a 4x4 board. I know it can be done on 6x6 and a friend says he found such a path for 10x10.An answer for 8x8 would be nice. A general answer about what sizes can and can't be done would be superb.

  • Has Toyota fixed traction control issue older Prius had?

Our 2011 Prius is not good on slippery winter roads. When the wheels start to slip, the Traction Control shuts off power to the wheels. So you can't pull the car up a slippery hill as you normally would: allowing some slippage but still making  progress. All progress just stops. If I'm stopped on a slippery hill, it may be impossible to move forward at all. Wheel immediately start to slip, and power to wheels shuts off. I need to back down the hill and get a running start.

At those times, I feel like I'm on Ice Road Truckers, driving in Alaska in winter.

Still, we are considering a newer Prius. Has Toyota fixed or mitigated this issue? I've tried researching it, and some places say later models are better, but I'm not finding the full story. I'm hoping someone here really knows and can give me the straight dope.

  • What did Aaron Rodgers mean by "late down the middle"?

Rodgers threw a rare interception yesterday. Several articles quoted him as saying about it, "(Adams) felt bad about that, but I was sitting on the bench and all I was thinking was (former Packers offensive coach) Tom Clements’ voice in my head going, ‘Late down the middle’ — one of the QB mortal sins that I broke. So that’s a frustrating one, but it was a solid game. I felt good about the performance of our offense. I felt like I was in rhythm all day."

But none of the article using the quote explains exactly what "late down the middle" means. Like, should he only throw it there, not throw it there, run that way? Or something else?

Pretty bad reporting to use it but not explain it, IMHO. I really have no clue what he's trying to say.

  • Why do some NFL kickers kick PAT's from hash mark instead of center of field?

Sometimes the PAT ball placement for the try is on one of the hash marks, and sometimes it's in the middle of the field. Why wouldn't all kickers want it spotted in the middle. Using a hash mark makes no sense to me.

  • How hard is it to sell vintage stereo equipment?

I have a Dynaco pre-amp and amp, and a high-end Kenword tuner. These are listed on eBay for hundreds of dollars. But listing and selling are two different things. Does that old equipment really sell for anywhere near the listing prices? Anyone have any experience or advice about selling items like this?

Until recently, these were the main parts of my stereo set-up, playing through AR-3a's.  I replaced them with a decent receiver simply because the 3 units were taking up too much space, and the receiver became available. They all work fine, despite their age. (No work has been done to them, or as far as I can tell, is needed).

  • Can't get apnews.com to open up as a normal tab?

I'm using Chrome on a Samsung A50. I have links to major news websites on my home screen. I prefer using a browser with tabs to read news, rather than the outlets' apps. I go to apnews.com, then add the URL icon to my home screen. But when I open that link, it opens the AP app, instead of browser page.

How do I get around this? I want to read AP news on the browser, so I can share links, open several stories at a time, etc.,. but it's not letting me.

  • Pick 4 points in the given squares; what's probability they are the vertices of a convex quadrilateral?

The squares are the unit squares in quadrants 1, 2, 3, and 4 that meet at the origin. (The x- and y-coordinates of the vertices are all 0 or 1.) Call the points A, B, C and D respectively. The quadrilateral is ABCD. What the probability that ABCD is convex?  I've solved this (with a little help from Wolfram Alpha). I thought others here might find it interesting too.

Would it be possible to see a galaxy like this with night vision glasses?

I'm familiar with Andromeda and how faint it is. You can only see a little smudge with the naked eye, and often need averted vision to get that. But with a strong pair of night vision glasses of some sort, would it be possible to see anything remotely like what's shown in this picture, which is a comparison of Andromeda's size relative to the moon.

  • Do the rear seats in 2020 Lexus RX350 slide back?

I know they do in the RX350L. What about the RX350? I took a test drive today. Loved the car until I checked out the rear seating area, which I could barely get into. Yeah, I'm 6'4", but I could barely get in. Can't see going even a short distance with 5 people. For that much money, I expected more space. So what gives? Reviews say it's roomy even for tall people. I'm wondering if the seats just weren't back all the way.

  • Can you help me revive a Thinkpad (Factory ID KS)?

It's an old model, and hasn't been turned on for years. So the battery is Dead. And it won't recharge. I've tried several different cords, to no avail. It's always been finicky--hard to get it to accept a charge with anything other than the original charger.

I'm trying to find a way revive it, but nothing works. The "take out battery, release static charge, etc." hack is no good since it's totally sealed with no (easy) way to access the battery.

I pressed what I think is the "emergency reset" hidden button, but with the unit fully discharged and dead, that had no effect, of course.

It's probably not worth paying a repair shop to fix (probably needs a new port and possibly new battery). But I'd like to at least bring it back to life.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  • What does "Stop orders are triggered by a transaction or print in the security" mean?

My online broker explains stop orders like this:

Stop orders are generally used to protect a profit or to prevent further loss if the price of a security moves against you. Stop orders are triggered by a transaction or print in the security. A stop loss order will become a market order when a transaction or print occurs at the stop price you've selected. A stop limit order will become a limit order when a transaction or print occurs at the stop price you've selected.

I understand that the stop loss order becomes a market order when transactions hit that price, but what is a "print"?

  • How do they film buildings on fire for TV without destroying them?

I just watched an episode of Chicago Fire where a dry cleaners was on fire. Lots of smoke, and tall flames coming off the roof. Interior seen through glass doors and windows full of smoke. It was a real establishment, easy to verify since they didn't change the name or signs, and it's right there on Google Maps and Street View. And it's still in business!

I thought the building might have been scheduled for demolition, and sold to the producers for use in the series. But no, it's still there and open.

So how do they make it look like the building is up in flames?

  • Why does Excel in Office 365 mess up a UNC format filename by dropping \\?

I'm pulling filename out of a database, and pasting them into Excel. Some of them have paths mapped to a drive. Those all work.

Others are UNC-style names, starting with something like \\util3\...

For those, everything works fine for me. I have MS Office Professional Plus 2013 installed.

Another user has Office 365, and for him, the entry in the cell is missing the \\ at the beginning of the path. So the filename isn't functioning like it should.

BTW, we're not creating hyperlinks. The filename is inserting into a text box on a form, and should open when it's double-clicked.

We've both researched this but aren't finding a solution. Is it a glitch in Office 365? A setting? How do we get around this? It's a simple little thing, but we've spend several hours trying to resolve it.

  • 4 ohm speakers with amp rated for 8 ohms?

I'm replacing my very old Dynaco PAT-4/Stereo 120 amp that I use for my 4 ohm AR-3A speakers. I have a Sherwood RX-4109 receiver I want to use. The manual says to use at least 8 ohm speakers. It's rated at 100W/channel. I use them in a small space, so I'm not going to play them very loud.

Can I get away with this, or will the impedance mismatch possibly harm the receiver, or give me unsatisfactory performance?
