  • is my horse palomino or flaxen chestnut?

He has a deep golden dappled body with a fully white mane, a blaze, and 4 white socks. His muzzle has pink skin and he has one white hoof.

BUT his tail, though mostly silver/white, has some chestnut and some black hairs.

So... does that disqualify him from being true "palomino"?

  • Is it possible to clip legs with full-sized body clippers?

I own an Andis full-sized heavy-duty body clipper. I've never needed a medium-sized clipper because I've always done hunter clips (leave the legs and face unclipped). This year I'd like to clip my boy's legs and face as well. He is 17.3hh percheron/QH x TB, so he does get very fuzzy in the winter with light feathering. Is it possible to do a good clip job with my full-sized clippers, or should I rent a pair of smaller ones?

My boyfriend says they're just "baked dough". But I say they're still cookies.

  • Natural eventing? Does it exist?

I've grown up around natural horsemanship (NOT Parelli. I mean REAL natural horsemanship like Ray Hunt, Chris Cox, John Lyons type stuff), but for the last 5 years I've transitioned into Eventing and Jumpers. I don't like the way we do a lot of our schooling in these disciplines, however, jumping is my passion and I truly love the sport. I was wondering if anyone has even heard of Natural Eventing. Can you share anything you know about it? Any websites or books would be awesome! I'm just really curious if anyone has created a hybrid training method yet. If not, I may blaze my own trail. I am about to graduate high school and this is starting to look like a very appealing route to take as a career.

    Thanks so much!

  • Looking up my ancestry online?

What is a good website for researching my genealogy online WITHOUT having to enter a credit card number for a free trial? My retarded US history teacher gave us an assignment telling us to research our family tree on Ancestry.com and told us we could sign up for a free trial, but my mom won't enter her credit card # (why do you need to give that info for a free trial...? beats me).

Sooo I'm buying this horse http://www.dreamhorse.com/show_horse.php?form_hors... (bringing him home next weekend) and he's GINORMOUS. 17.3hh. My last mare was a 15.2hh appendix, so I need to buy some new equipment (bridles, boots, ect.). How in the world does that work? Will I have to buy a new girth, or can it clip to the buckle..?? Or can I buy a strap-on D-ring?

  • Benadryl - eventing - legal substance?

I'm looking at purchasing a young OTTB mare who has minor seasonal allergies. The owner's vet told her to feed 10 pills/day of the over-the-counter Benadryl. It seems to be working just fine, so if I purchase this mare I will be competing at Training level eventing by the end of next year. We will also compete in local rated H/J and dressage shows. I need to know if the ingredients of Benadryl are *legal* for USEF/USEA/USDF competitions, but I don't know where to start.

Any input, links, or personal experiences are welcome. Please don't try to tell me I shouldn't buy a horse with allergies for upper-level eventing. They are MINOR, and don't affect her respiratory health at all.

    Thanks!!

  • List of pre-purchase questions?

I'm going on Sunday to try out a horse - upper-level event prospect, OTTB sired by Storm Cat. I'm trying to make up a list of questions to ask the owner during the visit, but I don't have a whole lot of time to sit down and type out a list. Any contributions would be awesome!

    Thanks!

  • Pursuing a competitive equine career?

For now, school is my main priority, but I would like to eventually go Pro in Eventing or Show Jumping. I'm still in High School, but I need to decide whether or not I'm going on to college. Though I'm only a Sophomore, I have average grades (about a 3.1 GPA) and though I am intelligent and lean quickly, I'm not particularly smart with textbooks.

I already have a large network of people who know me and love me. Almost every trainer I come across compliments me on my determination and skill. I am a working student for a Gold Medal Grand Prix dressage trainer, I do barefoot trims (I apprenticed with my farrier for a while), and I work with numerous "project" and "problem" horses for various people, including at a Gypsy breeding farm. I've started competing regularly in Hunter/Jumper schooling and rated shows, as well as USEF recognized Events.

I've been looking at equine-related degrees offered in colleges in the USA, but there aren't a whole lot of options out there, and none seem to strike me as something to take advantage of. I'm currently a C-2 rated member of the USPC, and it seems like a B-rating would be the equivalent of a major in Equine Studies. Other options are Equine Sciences, Pre-vet, or Agriculture, but those don't seem like they'd be worth my money if I won't be using the knowledge or need it on my resumé.

  • Logic question for Atheists, Agnostics, and Believers. Absolute truth?

What is absolute truth? By denying absolute truth, you are absolutely sure that there is no truth, which brings us back to absolute truth. So what is it?

  • Shims?? (20 characters)?

I've delayed saddle-fit on my horse for various reasons, but I'm now noticing some white hairs in the little dip behind her shoulder where the saddle sits. I know that this means there is a pressure point on that spot, and I know that I need to shim her, I'm just not sure where. Should the shims go where the scarring is starting behind the shoulder, or farther back? What has been your experience with shims? Did you make them yourself (buy the material and cut it out custom to your horse) or did you buy them? I have some wonderful closed-cell material--the stuff found in Professional Choice's Air Ride pads--that I'm hoping to make some shims out of.

Any info, advice, words of wisdom, links to informational sites, ect. is welcome.

    Thanks!

  • Atheists and Agnostics: What is truth?

4+4 = 8. That is always true. But what is truth? How can there be absolute truth without a Creator? Truth then, becomes merely personal opinion and varies from person to person, and truth is no longer truth because there is nothing to base it off of.

    What say you?

Wondering about the calming supplement ingredient L-Tryptophan... is it illegal for Eventing/Jumpers/Dressage? Where can I find out about this?

  • Type of clip for this winter?

My horse gets out 3-5 times a week. Usually 1x Dressage, 2x Jumping, and 1-2x trail ride or trot/gallop sets (we do 3-day Eventing). In the past month she has grown quite the winter coat! She tends to sweat a LOT, so some of this extra fuzz has to go. Last year I did a hunter clip and kept a heavyweight blanket on her (she lives in pasture in California, where a 30 degree night is uncommon). I need to clip her some time in the next few weeks, because all this sweat is getting ridiculous. We jumped for 30 minutes yesterday and she was breathing normally but dripping with sweat!

So, here's my question: What type of clip should I do this winter? I thought I would go with the hunter clip like last winter, but I'm not sure if a high trace-clip or blanket clip would be better..? Opinions? Suggestions?

  • Suggestions? Looking for an ORIGINAL name!?

I've got a 15.3hh cherry bay mare. She's very spontaneous and green, not exactly a trustworthy jumping horse.. but she is very intelligent and a quick learner. I got her last December as a polo pony and have been re-training her all this year for Eventing. I changed her name to Trinity when I got her, going with a biblical theme. We're going to attend our first official event in October, so I need a show name for her. Trinity seems like a dull show name, so I've been using Rose of Sharon (also from the bible) for the schooling shows, but I'm not too sure about that one anymore. I'm looking for suggestions of biblically themed show names, but I'll consider anything that sounds catchy.

    Thanks so much!

  • Is it possible for me to get a job during school?

I'm 15 1/2 years old, working on getting my driving permit. I've had a job cleaning stalls and feeding horses at a ranch down the road from where I live since the summer of 2008. 2010 was my second year paying taxes (I had to pay them because my boss paid me out of her business account and reported me as an employee).

So, my question is this: is it possible for me to get a job during this school year? If so, what would I have to do to get one? I know I need to get a work permit from my school first, then talk to some respectable people who can give me good references (such as my boss, my horseback riding instructor, the pastor of my church, and a teacher or two).

Also, I'm wondering what kind of places I should be looking to apply to (ie. pizza shops, ice cream parlors, ect.)... what businesses hire 15 year olds? One of my friends has had a job at Baskin31Robin's (an ice cream place) since April and she just turned 16 last week.

Any suggestions, advice, instruction ect. is welcome and very appreciated!

    Thanks!

  • Info on getting a sponsor for Eventing/Pony Club?

I've been riding at the Beginner Novice level for almost 3 years now because my horse held me back. I now have a new horse who I plan to take up the levels. We will hopefully be at Training or Preliminary level by 2012 or 2013. Novice in 2011. I am also testing for my C2 in Pony Club this fall. Hopefully C3 Traditional or HB by the end of 2011 or beginning of 2012. Since money is obviously hard to come by, I was wondering if it is possible to get a sponsor (like Monster sponsors BMX riders and such) and if it is, what is the politically correct way to get one (ie send a letter or write an email, ect.). Any info, links, or personal experience with obtaining a sponsor is appreciated.
