  • Is a pay raise manditory at all in BC?

My friend has been working at the same place for two years now, and her pay hasn't gone up at all. Every single employee there only earns $8/hour, no matter how long they're worked there. There are some people who have been there 5-10 years and are still at $8/hour. Is this in any way illegal?

  • Should I make my own injury claim after a car accident?

On December 22nd, a friend and I were in a car accident. She was the driver, I was the passenger. Long story short, the guy tried to pull a u-turn from the right lane in front of us (we were in the left lane) and we t-boned him. Both cars got towed and his was a write-off. I went to the doctors the day after it happened and he said I had soft tissue injuries. The night of the accident my friend went online to ICBC and filed an accident claim, and mentioned we were both injured. We have an appointment Friday but I'm unsure if I should open up my own injury claim. I suffer from a still-bruised shoulder from the seat belt, an extremely sore back, both shoulders, and neck, I've missed 3 days of work so far and am on light duties until further notice. I'm going back to the doctors tomorrow for more input and how to proceed with treating my injuries.

I've been getting mixed answers of what to do next, and I'm worried if I wait to long or do somethine wrong I won't be compensated for anything. What do I do?

  • Baby bearded dragon with a swollen lower jaw, not eating and almost vibrating?

So we have a baby beardie (probably around 5 months) that suddenly stopped eating. I notice when I hold him you can almost feel small, steady vibrations. His jaw is also constantly puffed out and he occasionally takes deep breaths. Could it be MBD or a calcium deficiency?

  • Can a Blue-Tongued Skink eat Crested Gecko Diet?

So at work we got this little monster of a BTS. After just a day of handling he's turned into the biggest sweetheart so we pretty much carry him around everywhere. As I was making some Crested Gecko Diet (Repashy) I held the skink on my arm and the CGD in that hand while opening the Crestie cage with my other hand, and while I was doing that, the skink literally dived into the CGD and just went crazy. He lapped it all up! Absolutely LOVED it. I assume it's not bad for him, and would a little bit as a treat every once in awhile hurt? Like a couple times a week (or less?)

  • African Clawed Frog - Insides just sorta... popped out?

I don't have a picture yet (camera battery dead) but I woke up this morning to a shock.

Now I have an ACF in a ten gallon (she got abandoned at my work so I couldn't just leave her) and she's been doing good for a few months now. Been feeding her ReptoMin pellets and worms.

So out of her butt-area, there's these two large red masses. One is bigger than the other and they both look like a bunch of small red bubbles stuck together. What the hell is this?!

  • Extremely high-kill shelters in BC/AB/WA?

Does anyone know of any extremely high-kill shelters in British Columbia, Alberta or Washington area? My friend's puppy just died and when he's ready for a new one he wants to save one from an extremely high-kill shelter. They will be looking through many shelters, but are there any that are particularly bad with euthanasia rates? Anything helps :) Thanks!

  • Where to take a wild animal that would otherwise be killed due to its pest status in its homeland?

So a couple found a little unknown critter in their backyard, and after some investigation we've determined it to be a Glis Glis/ Fat Dormouse. Now in its home in Europe, it's a pest. We can't keep it and need to know where to take it where it won't be killed. I live in Vancouver BC so any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Glis Glis/Fat Doormouse care?

So a couple weeks ago a couple came into my work with a little critter in a cat-carrier. We couldn't figure out what it was so they took it home. Just yesterday, they brought it in again asking if anyone who worked at the store wanted it. My boss ended up taking it in and trying to find out what it was. Turns out it was a Glis Glis/Fat Doormouse. How do you take care of such a thing? Any information would be great.

  • Possible panosteitis.. but other symptoms. Vets aren't sure. Help?

So I asked a question yesterday about a lab/boxer/pit mix with possible panosteitis. They're doing radiographs in the morning to check it out. Thing is, there are other symptoms involved which don't seem to be connected to their theory. I was wondering if anyone had any insight. He is a 5-6 month old boxer/lab/pit cross who has been eating Medi-Cal Adolescent formula.

His symptoms: Severe pain in his shoulder

Apparently low red blood cell and white blood cell count

They said they found traces of things in his system that are similar to that of rat poison. This isn't my dog so I'm not sure if there's any more to what they've found, this is just all I know. The owner of the dog does smoke in his car, but not when the dog is in there. Since cigarettes can have some nasty stuff in them, is it possible that traces of it were inhaled while the dog was in the car (not while the owner was smoking) but from it being like, stuck to the fabrics in the car? And then appeared similar to rat poison from the ingredients? Believe me, this dog did NOT eat rat poison, nor was anywhere near it.

What would explain low red/white blood cell count? Is there anything that has similar symptoms to pano plus low blood cell count? Anything that explains all of this? They trust their vet 100% and they are working hard to find out what it is, but I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this? Right now the dog is on a high dose of pain meds and won't even stand up. He's got IV fluids going into him and well and is breathing very heavily (told it could be a side-effect of the pain meds)

Sorry for the huge/confusing wall of text. Thanks for any insight!

  • Bleach inhalation.. itchy throat?

So about 4 days ago at work we did a big clean up. This included using Fantastik bleach spray, and me being not the most fantastic thinker, didn't see a problem using it without a mask. I probably spent a good two hours solid spraying stuff with the spray and by the end of the day I had the worst headache, a bad stomach ache, an irritated nose and throat. Now all but the itchy throat is gone and I'm wondering if exposure for so long has caused any permanent damage? I'm coughing constantly and I'm wondering if it should go away on its own or if there's enough concern to go see a doctor.

    Thanks!

  • What breed of dog does this look like?

    About 8 weeks old: http://img819.imageshack.us/i/33411989.png/

    I think he's 3 or 4 months old here: http://img707.imageshack.us/i/61594439649769519693...

    5 or 6 months: http://img202.imageshack.us/i/76300460236519519693...

They were told he was a APBT/Boxer/Lab cross, but I'm curious as to what you all see. Obviously we can't know for sure but guessing is fun (:

  • Panosteitis in APBT/Lab cross pup?

My friend's dog's paw/leg started hurting a lot suddenly (literally overnight) and when they brought him to the vet, they were told he probably has Panosteitis. He's about 5 months old and is an APBT/Lab cross (so we think). I know the vet will have more information on it but in the meantime I'm curious if anyone else has dealt with it. How long did it last? What did you do to ease the pain? What else should we know? Anything will help.

    Thanks!

  • Small Chinchilla-like animal with mouse face?

A few days ago, someone came into my work with a cat-carrier. Inside was an animal who looked exactly like a chinchilla (same fluffy tail and everything) but it had a mousier face. It was NOT a baby chinchilla. I know I've seen this animal before but I can't put my finger on it. They caught it in their yard (Vancouver, BC) but I don't think it was wild. It was probably about half the size of a full-grown chinchilla.

Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about or am I just crazy?

  • Preening pin feathers and bird terrified of spray bottle?

    Two questions here:

First - I have a Green Cheek Conure molting quite bad around his head. I want to help him with the pin feathers but they're all extremely sensitive and he won't let me anywhere near them. Is it best to just leave them all alone for good or keep trying? I know they'll come off eventually but there's a lot and it can't be comfortable. I've helped him with all the other feathers but he won't let me near his head.

Second - On the note of molting, my bird hates baths. I'll give him a dish of water, he won't use it. I'll try misting him and he runs for his life. The only way I can get him a decent bath is under the faucet and he still acts like he's dying. I want to be bathing him daily during this molt but it's so stressful for both of us. Any tips on how to get him to enjoy the water? I've tried splashing around in it and acting all excited. Nothing. He is just not interested.

    Thanks!

  • How much should I feed my African Clawed Frog?

So, I aquired this little bugger from work. Some woman decided she didn't want to take care of her anymore. We normally don't take animals in but the woman had nothing else to do. My boss walks up to me with this bucket and I see this decent-sized ACF. It's a female. She's about 2.5 inches long from snout to vent (so, excluding legs). I ended up taking her and my boss is taking my four female bettas, so I put her in my 10 gallon. It's got tons of live plants (which I'm expecting her to destroy) and she seems to love the swimming room. I have no idea what the previous owners kept her in.

    As for my question:

I bought some Reptomin sticks, freeze-dried baby shrimp, and mini krill. How much should she eat per day? I know adults don't eat every day, but I don't know how old she is.

  • What to do about zebra finch eggs?

Long story! So a few days ago I found out we had some zebra finch eggs in a nest at work. (We have males and females all mixed, and the eggs looked different than they normally do.. ie. When I usually see them they're very light/pink and I can see the yolk easily, then I discard them. Now they're hardened and very white)

Pretty much we HAVE to throw out any eggs we find at work (a pet store) but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I felt that these were different than normal. We caught the parents (we watched and waited to see who sat on the eggs) and put them in a back room with the sign "customer hold" on it until we figure out what to do.

So now one of my managers is in on this, and well as another associate. Someone else has found the eggs and told another manager, so he asks me about it. I tell him I don't know what he's talking about and that I'll go have a look. I text my manager and tell him the jig is up, then ask him if I buy the finches, will he take them home and watch them. He says yes and has just taken them home (just grabbed the whole cage and took it, no fussing with the nest or anything) about 30 minutes ago.

    My questions are:

    - What are the chances these eggs are in fact fertile? I don't want to candle them because it's hard to get at the eggs the way the nest is built.

    - What could happen to the possible chicks from all of the moving around from the store cage to the back room and now to someone's house?

    - What other information should I know?

Please give any input. I just want to give these guys a chance, however little it could be. Tell me anything I should know or do.

    Thanks so much!

  • What to add with four female bettas in a 10 gal? If any?

So after my male betta died, I decided to try a sorority of females. I'd originally gotten six but one died (stress) and one turned out to be a juvie male. So now I have four and they're all calm with each other and the dominant female has her little squabbles. Anyway, I was wondering if there was anything I could add for a bit of variety? I doubt it, but just inquiring.

    Here's my tank:

    http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j248/Planness/IM...

There's also a big Hygrophila behind the one in the front, so it's pretty full of plants and water changes happen weekly (30%)

Anything fit the bill or should the girls stay alone?

  • What are the regulations regarding bringing betta fish from US to Canada?

I live in Canada and recently lost my two betta fish. I now have an empty 10 gallon and want to get a new one. I was looking into some fin varieties that I can't find in Canada (halfmoon, double-tail, etc) and know that the Petco in Bellingham might have some. Are there any specific regulations that could prohibit me from taking a day trip to Petco, and then bringing a fish back into Canada?

  • Purebites dog treats for a conure?

Well I was at work today and walked by the dog treats. I noticed the Purebites dog treats and saw that they were 100% freeze-dried chicken. Now I know this is far less nutritional than fresh chicken, but would it still be safe to feed my Green-Cheek Conure? There's no salt/preservative/anything, but I'm just making sure. It would be nice to give him a more varied diet with some meat products more often (we don't eat a lot of meat in this house).

His diet currently is as follows:

    Harrison's pellets

Fresh veggies (usually a mix of carrot, bell pepper, broccoli, yam, apple, banana and some orange juice to discourage bacterial growth)

    Sprouts when I can

Thanks for any insight and if you have any other feeding tips that would be great!

  • Birds eating uncooked beans? Sprouting?

I've heard that birds shouldn't eat uncooked beans because they contain a toxin.. but what about beans used for sprouting? I haven't had a chance to sprout my own yet, so I bought a mix of Mung beans, red and green lentils, pea, adzuki and garbonzo beans. Should they be cooked? And if so, wouldn't that get rid of many nutrients?
