  • Honey Bee Queen Question?

Can anyone tell me what triggers a new queen to lay?

I understand it might take a new queen up to two weeks to start laying. Does she wait till there is a critical amount of honey stores? A certain volume of comb? Does it just take that long for every thing to start working right?

Specifically I am asking about a newly installed package, but this also applies to a wild swarm. I am asking more from an entomology point of view than a beekeeping one.

  • Newly Installed Honey Bee Package, 2 wks, No Brood Yet?

Installed several packages of Italians two weeks ago, queens have been out about a week, give or take a few days. Good comb being drawn, honey stores starting, lots of pollen. No brood. Queens found on two of three hives.

Installed a single package of Carnolians three weeks ago, and have capped brood.

Is this just a trait of the Italians? Do they just need one more week? Are they waiting for honey stores before they lay?

In other words, should I be concerned?

  • If the United States is a Christian Nation, should we base our laws on Biblical Law?

You can't pick and choose here, either we base our laws on ALL of the bible, or none of it. That means no working on Sunday, no cutting your hair, no planting crops in fields for more than seven years in a row, no eating shellfish, no wearing cloth of mixed fabric, woman can't vote of own property to speak in a man's presence. All of it.

And the 10 Commandments? Well, those won't work either. The first four are about worship, not morality, and nowhere is 'rape' mentioned. Should we then allow rape in the USA? Oh, wait, in Leviticus it says that if a man rapes a woman he has to pay her father 20 shekels and then has to marry her.

So, should be base our laws on the Bible? Should we have religious law just like Iran? Or can we agree religion should have nothing to do with secular law. Nothing.

  • For Conservative Female Voters?

I am looking to understand the motivations of women who are considering voting Republican.

If you are female and are planning on voting for a Republican candidate this election, would you be so kind as to explain to me your reasons?

Contentious or off-topic answers will be deleted and reported, this is not a thread for discussion of politics.

    Thank you.

  • Gaelic Translation Question?

For a story I am working on, I need an archaic, formal way to greet someone and ask how they are doing. 'Greetings, how fare thee?'-kind of thing. If there is a way to imply derision, such as addressing someone far beneath their station, that would be perfect.

    thank you.

  • I have heard that I cannot file my taxes before Feb 15 if I paid mortgage interest, is this true?

There are many rumors that the IRS is re-doing their computers as ordered by Congress, either because of income bracket changes or because of changes to laws regarding mortgage interest. I have been told that if I file before Feb 15 the IRS wont process my forms until then.

    Is this true?

  • What is faith? What is faith?

This is a serious question. I am writing a short story about aliens. As an atheist, I cannot come up with a credible answer that one of the faithful would give to an inquisitive alien. And no, this is not a mocking or insulting story.

So, in your own words, 'what is faith?"

  • Hebrew translation help.?

I am working on my second novel, a dark fantasy. In my first I used hebrew to represent the language of creation, the language spoken by Angels. I managed to translate the word I needed, thanks mostly to help from this site.

Once again, I find I need a word translated. Most free translation sites give me a series of words in the hebrew alphabet, with no pronunciation or context. I need native speakers, please.

I need a command form of negation or denial. Sort of like shouting 'stop!'

In the context of the story, a character who has studied the divine language is using this word to cancel out or dispel a spell being cast upon him.

    Thank you for your help.

  • To those offended by the Mosque near Ground Zero?

Which is more offensive to you: The building of a muslim center and mosque within a few blocks of the site of a terrorist attack against the United States(in which 900 muslims died), or the building of a 5,500 sq foot shopping mall with basement levels deep enough to disturb the ashes of the victims?

Should we not let those victims lie in peace?

  • I need help with a Hebrew Translation.?

For a novel Im working on. I need the Hebrew word for 'unmaking'. Just about all of the online translation sites I find, only give the consonants, and most of them agree on the same translation. As I understand it, its four letters, Lamed, Bet, Samehk, Lamed. But how are these pronounced? And am I even in the ball park?

What I am looking for, is the word that is the opposite of 'creation'.

    Thank you.

  • Travel through Las Vegas, need local food joint?

A trip to SanDiego takes us through las Vegas, along I-15. We will likely stop there for lunch. But we hate casinos and buffets. We want a local, back street dive burger or sandwich joint.

    Any suggestions?

  • Can you brew cocoa nibs in the same manner as coffee?

I have some roasted cocoa nibs. I enjoy snacking on them, as well as adding to baking, ice cream, etc.

I use a Moka, a stovetop espresso machine, and was wondering if I could grind down the cocoa nibs, and use them in the Moka. Either by themselves, or mixed with coffee.
