  • Debit card hold for incidentals at hotel?

I booked a hotel through hotwire, so it is already paid for in full. I know there is a $40 per day hold for incidentals, and generally that is in addition to the price of the room.

Over the 3 nights I m there, will the total hold be only $120 since I ve already paid for the room, or will they hold the price of the room even though they ve already received payment for it?

  • Small Claims Trial date in IL?

I received a summons a couple weeks ago that said I was required to:

    a) appear on 4-10-15 to answer the complaint

    b) file an answer to the complaint within 30 days of service.

I live in Illinois. My questions is this:

Is the date from a) a hearing date, or an actual trial date. I assume from the language that it's simply a default date to guarantee an answer to the complaint(or an automatic judgement against me if I don't show) and this date will be canceled, and i will receive trial date, after I file my answer today. Is that correct?

  • Right of way - U-turn vs right turn?

Ok, this quuestion has a couple wrinkles. And yes, I'm aware that if the car turning right has a red light, and the vehicle making a U-turn has a green, that the second vehicle has the right of way. In my case, however, there were 2 wrinlkles to my situation.

    1) This happened in Illinois, so in this specific case, the vehicle making the U-turn was in the wrong by default, as all U-turns are always illegal.

    2) Both I (turning right) and the vehicle making the U-turn had green lights, because both their lane going straight and vehicles traveling my direction had green lights (ours was a right turn green signal)

So, here's my question - In a state where U-turns are actually legal, who would have had the right of way in this case? I'm assuming that, like left turns on green, U-turns om green must yield to other vehicles trvaeling with green lights. Is that right?

  • Should I ask for a raise?

A little over 6 months ago, I started a new job. When I was hired by my employer, it was for a job title for which starting salary is generally between $40,000 and $50,000 - so when they offered me $45,000, I took it.

The thing is, between the day I accepted the job and the day I started, they had an employee in another position quit. So when I showed up for my first day, they asked me if I wanted the newly open position, and they would put their 2nd choice for the old position in that role. I said yes.

Here's the problem though - the postition I'm currently working in has average starting salaries in the $65,000 - $75,000 range.

Should I ask for a raise after 6 months since the position i negotiated my salary for initially makes less tham the job I'm actually performing? If so, is asking for $20,000 (almost 50%, but only the minimum threshold for my current job title) out of line?

  • Revenge on bad parkers - am I the only one?

Am the only one who, when I see an open parking space in which someone has parked over the line on their driver's side, proceeds to park (directly between the lines - in the proper and legal way - mind you) so close to their driver's side door (with my passenger side door) that they can't possibly get in through the door?

I mean, it's perfectly legal, I'm within my lines. They're the ones parked incorrectly, right?

  • Wrong way in parking lot?

As I was driving down the lane of a local parking lot, a lady driving a van began to turn directly towards me. The thing is, this lane had an arrow pointing only one direction -- the direction I was travelling. Since I didn't have enough room to move to the side (I was already at the end of the lane), I stopped and pointed in her direction while using my other hand to point at the arrow indicating the same thing.

She threw her hands up in the air, slapped her gear shifter like she was angry, and backed up. As I passed her while turning, I said "the lane only goes this way" while again pointing the same direction as the arrow.

She laughed, and responded "no it doesn't" ... like I was imagining the arrow, and all of the cars facing the same direction.

Anybody else hate it when this happens?

  • What do you do when you make a mistake while driving, and someone honks at you because of it?

A couple days ago, I was a approaching an intersection at which I did not have a stop sign, and was attempting to turn left, and a truck on my right did have a stop sign, and was attempting to go straight. I was going probably 20 MPH (or so, just to slow down for the turn) and was only about 15 or 20 yards from the intersection when the truck driver proceeded to pull out in front of me, causing me to hit my brakes so hard that the ant-lock brakes kicked in. As I saw my life flash before my eyes, I honked my horn in the hopes that he would hear it and possibly have quick enough reflexes to stop in time.

Instead, he looks at me incredulously and flips me off for the entirety of his trip through the intersection. I missed his rear bumper my maybe 1 or 2 feet.

So it got me thinking, do any of you have similar stories? And what do you do when you realize you're in the wrong while driving, and someone honks at you because of it?

  • bump on clavicle near shoulder?

Pretty much right where my clavicle meets my shoulder, I have a bump that was just there one day when I woke up. It was seriously not there at all one day, and about quarter sized the next day, and hasn't grown since,

It's been about 5 days, and nothing has changed. It doesn't hurt unless I lift my arm above my head or lay on that side in bed, and I have total range of motion and strength (or at least close to it) in the affected arm.

It turned red after a couple days, but I think it's just the skin reacting to the largeness of the bump.

Any ideas what it might be? Thanks.

PS - I have an appointment scheduled for tomorrow morning.

  • late merging people question?

For those that see a sign saying "left lane ends, merge right" and continue in the ending lane until the pavement runs out, expecting other cars to let them in at that point: Do you realize that even if your way is the better way, the law says that if you cause an accident doing do so, you are 100% at fault? And do you care that doing so saves you maybe 10 seconds, and makes you an inconsiderate jerk?

  • Cars entering drive-thru stopped in roadway?

I've wondered this for a while now, so I'm curious if you all know the answer:

At a typical drive-thru, if cars wishing to enter the line must stop within the roadway in order to do so (because the line is long) are they illegally parking on the roadway?

I know that in Illinois, for purposes of parking laws, all cars that come to a stop in the roadway for any reason other than crossing lanes of traffic or coming to a stop sign, are considered to be parked. It does not matter whether they are technically "parking" or "standing", they are legally considered parked.

So shouldn't cars in the drive-thru have to clear the roadway, or be considered illegally parked?

Regardless, I don't feel the need to like the fact that because someone wants a cheeseburger, AND doesn't want to walk in to get it, I must be delayed in reaching my destination.

  • Late Mergers: legal responsibility?

This one is simple. I realize that some studies have shown that late (zipper) merging increases traffic flow speed. While I question the realistic nature of such results, my point is not to question the most effective method of merging.

My point is that all mergers, late or otherwise, are still legally obligated to yield to traffic that already exists in the lane with which they wish to merge. In other words, regardless of whether or not late merging saves time, the only legal ramifications would be a ticket for the late merger in case of a collision.

Am I wrong here? So far as I know, there is no law on the books that says "If I want to merge, the traffic already existing in the other lane must move heaven and earth to ensure that I can merge when, where, and how I want to".

I've researched this a great deal, and I'm sure (at least in my home state) that there is no legal obligation of existing traffic to let someone merge. It is the sole responsibility of the merger to do so safely. Period.

So my question to late mergers is this:

Regardless of how it may save you time, realizing that you would be legally responsible for any car accident should someone fail to slow down for you, is it really worth it to save 30 seconds of time?

  • Neighbor playing loud music during the day?

My neighbor, who lives 2 houses down and two houses over (a straight line from my closest corner to his would still be at least 150 feet) has a habit of playing his music loudly around 3 or 4 in the afternoon when he works in his garage. It is loud and bassy enough that I can hear it with my doors closed and TV turned on and unmuted, and it can even slightly rattle some of the pictures and fans in the house.

For the first time, I asked him today to turn it down, which he eventually begrudgingly did. Before he did however, he revealed that he had received a $120 fine for violating the noise ordinance before, and that since that time he had complaints lodged against him, but was told it was ok as long is it wasn't after 10 PM.

While he may be correct on charge for noise violation, Couldn't I successfully argue that he is disturbing the public peace, if from over 150 feet away it is shaking my house, and keeping up my wife who was trying to nap?

Am I wrong, or could he still be cited for disturbing the peace if he does it again and I call the police?

  • How long is the flight from Chicago (ORD) to Orlando (MCO)?

Please only answer if you've taken this flight before, I've already looked at what other websites online estimate it should be. I ask because I need to know a pretty good estimate of when I'll be at the airport, so I can get my car from enterprise then.

The flight estimate from United says 2 hours and 40 minutes, but at 1005 miles, shouldn't it be less than that?

I realize that there is time spent waiting to leave, taxi, etc. But even still, shouldn't a plane that averages around 600 mph make the trip in 2 hours or so?

  • Fedex package left one location over 7 hours ago, and nearest location (for delivery) is only 2 hours away?

On the tracking details, it says my package is in transit (departed fedex location) over 7 hours ago. I know (from much past experience) that the next stop from this place is about 2 hours from there. Why has it not shown as "arrived at fedex location" at point b yet?

  • Why would anyone buy the iphone 4s?

It's simply inferior to many devices available. Take the HTC Rezound (which may not even be the best phone on Verizon) for example. It has a better screen (more Pixels Per Inch) than the 4s (despite also having a larger screen, 4.3 inch vs 3.5 inch), a 50% faster CPU, comes with $100 Beats earbuds, isn't tied to only use itunes, has 4G speeds that are proven to be at least 10 times faster than what the iphone realistically achieves on download and upload, and can view items requiring flash online.

So, my question is, why get an iphone 4s, when it's simply a clearly inferior product?

  • New phone from verizon - need new SIM card?

My girlfriend just got a Droid Charge after buying it online a few days ago. She says when she called Verizon, the guy told her she had to take the SIM card from her old phone, and put it in the new one.

That would make sense, except that the new SIM card is already with the phone, and the old SIM card doesn't work, so they're telling her she has to wait for a new one, because that's the only way to make the phone work.

Can't she just use the SIM card that came with the new phone?
