  • Employment Verification for a New Job?

I recently got a job offer for a job I really want. The offer is contingent on a criminal background check, an employment verification check and an education check.

I am a little bit nervous about the employment verification. A few of the jobs I have listed on my resume were fellowships or work as a consultant. While the bosses are still there for all of the positions I worked, I am afraid they don't have records of my employment dates or that the records might not be accurate. The fellowships I was paid out of an endowment fund and not by the companies I worked for, so there may not be official records of my dates of employment.

For the consulting job, the company's HR department was a disaster. They lost my invoices, paid me months late and generally were in disarray.

The job I was offered is at a non-profit, so I don't think they will do a very extensive check. But should I be worried that some discrepancies might come up between my dates of employment? Is there anything I should do so this isn't an issue when they do my background check?

Thanks in advance for the help

  • Girlfriend only likes to party without me?

I've been dating this girl for about 6 months and for the most part things are great. We used to go out all the time, have some drinks at the club and dance the night away. Now she never wants to go out with me. She always just wants to stay in and watch a movie and relax or do something very low key. If I manage to get her out she refuses to have more than one drink. She says she is trying to "save money" or she doesn't want to get a hangover or she is trying to watch how many calories she has. She is always tired and we never go out late or stay out late.

The thing that bothers me is that when she goes out with other people it the total opposite. She will stay out till 4am partying at the club. She will get really drunk and party hard.

I don't mind that she hangs out with her friends. I think doing things separate is important in a healthy relationship. Am I in the wrong to feel mistreated that she never wants to do these things with me?

  • Can birth control change mood/libido?

I've been seeing my girlfriend for a few months. Everything was going really great until very recently it seemed like she changed dramatically. We used to go out every weekend and have lots of really really good sex. Now she never wants to leave her apartment and complains that she is tired all of the time. She used to be really fun and exciting and lately all of that seems to have vanished. She also wanted to have sex constantly with me, then almost overnight she has absolutely no desire to have sex anymore.

She started taking birth control about a week or two before all of this started to happen. Is it possible that it is causing it? If that could be the case, what is a good way to discuss with her that maybe that is what causing it?

  • Too soon to quit my job?

I started a new job about 2 months ago. Its become painfully clear that this isn't the job for me. I have a long commute (90 minutes each way), I don't like the people that I work with, I don't get the necessary support from my company to perform my job well. I do not like the way I am treated by my bosses or by the company as a whole. I am a creative, intellectual type and this job is not intellectually stimulating at all.

It has gotten to the point that every single day I leave work stressed out and dejected. Everyday I hate going to work and count the minutes until I can leave. It has started to drag on my personal life and my health.

My biggest concern is that this is my first real career type job since graduating from an MBA program. I don't want the short term employment to negatively impact my chances of getting jobs in the future.

Ultimately I would like to stay at this position until I can find something new but every day it gets more and more difficult. I have enough savings that I can easily go 6 months without working if need be.

  • Not happy with how I am treated at work?

About 2 months ago I started a new job. When I was hired I was told I would be working about 20 minutes from my apartment. I was told the job would require me to work nights 3-4 times a month and once in a while on a Saturday if something out of the ordinary came up.

Fast forward 2 months and I have been placed 90 minutes from my apartment. I also work late nights about twice a week. The worst part is that I have been required to work every Saturday since I started. I mentioned that I was only supposed to work occasional Saturdays to my supervisor and he told me that they are going to need me to work every Saturday between now and at least the summer (5+ months). I do not receive any additional compensation for working Saturdays or nights.

I receive maybe 5 days off due to holidays throughout the year and will receive no vacation time for at least another 14 months. I get no personal days for 6 months and no paid sick leave for 4 more months. I have ~5 bosses who all give me work throughout the day and expect their work to be completed asap, regardless of if I have work from someone else.

The job is both physically and mentally demanding. When I am not stressed out and overwhelmed I enjoy the work, but I am finding this to be a continually shrinking portion of my work week. My productivity has dropped significantly due to stress and exhaustion.

Does anyone have advice about how I should deal with this situation? I don't want to quit but I also cannot continue to work like this.much longer.

  • How much do property managers make in NYC?

I recently had 2 interviews for a property management job in NYC. They both went very well and I was left with the impression that if I want it the job is mine. I recently finished up an MBA program and have never had to negotiate a salary before. I have a few months experience working in a real estate law office but no experience in property management.

Does anyone have experience in this area and know what I should be asking for starting out? I would also probably need to get a car for this job so I think that should factor in to what I ask for as well. Keep in mind this is in NYC and rent is about one gagillion dollars a month here.

I really appreciate the help! Thanks in advance.

  • Python Beginner Help?

I've decided that I wanted to learn some programming basics. I started by using this guide http://learnpythonthehardway.org/book/index.html

It took me an embarrassingly long time to get through exercise 0 which is getting python installed and running.

I moved to exercise 1 http://learnpythonthehardway.org/book/ex1.html and am failing miserably. The step tells you to create a basic code using the print command. It doesn't say what program to use to write this but I'm assuming its gedit, which the tutorial asked me to install earlier.

It says to save that file as ex1.py but does not list what directory I should save this in. I saved the code in a folder I created in my personal folder.

When I try to run this program in the terminal I get an error message that python cannot run the file because of [errno 2] No such file or directoy.

I'm guessing this has to do with how I'm saving the code but I am stumped.

Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Toyota Scion Driver Door Wont Open?

I was over at a friend's house last night. When I went to leave I couldn't get the driver's side front door to unlock. I have a 2005 Toyota Scion.

The lock pops up about half way when I try to unlock it but gets stuck there. I entered the car through the passenger side door. From the inside I still couldn't get the door to open. I pull the latch to open the door but which pulls fine but does not open the door.

I tried putting the key into the lock. It turns but again the lock still gets stuck and the door doesn't open.

I tried pulling the lock up with a moderate amount of force but stopped when it wasn't working because I was afraid to cause more damage.

Any ideas what could be causing this and how I might be able to fix it (cheaply)?

    Thanks for the help!

  • What to do with poofy curly hair (male)?

I have what might be described as a jew fro. My hair is extremely thick. Its also curly and gets very poofy if I don't put some kind of strong hold gel in it. If I use enough gel to make any impact it gets crunchy. It also goes back to poofy very fast if it gets only a little bit messed with.

Are there any options for making it look nice without having to either keep it really short or load it up with gel?

  • Muscle gain supplement?

I have gotten on a serious health kick recently. I do brazilian jiu jitsu 3-5 times a week and pushups/cruches every day. I have started eating a healthy diet. I am a little bit overweight (5'10 185lbs). I am trying to lose 10-15 lbs and put on some lean muscle.

I have almost no experience with supplements and am really clueless as to what I should take to help me put on lean muscle. I am a vegetarian but do eat fish. I wonder if that might not provide me with adequate amounts of protein for muscle gains.

I have seen a lot of people in my gym taking protein shakes after they train. Are there any kinds of protein shakes you would recommend? Is whey protein a good option?

Do any of you have experience with creatine? Is it something I should consider taking?

Edit: I take a multi-vitamin every day but thats about it.

Thanks in advance for the help!

  • How to List Personal Assistant Job on Resume?

I'm creating a resume for a few internships I am applying for. I worked over the past summer as a personal assistant to a group of five individuals in Las Vegas Nevada. Most of them were there as professional gamblers. I did things like managing the payment and organizing of the house and rental cars, driving people, booking appointments and various other day to day tasks.

Should I list this on my resume and how should I put this down? Most resumes have the company you worked for as the heading for each job.

  • Couple of issues with new apartment?

I am currently a college student. I am renting a 3 bedroom apartment with two other guys. Last year when we signed the lease the landlord showed us the place and it appeared to be in good condition.

Out lease started in June but because all three of us were home for the summer we are just moving in now for the semester. I stopped by the apartment this past Saturday to drop some things off and I'm planning on moving in permanently on 8/29. When I got there the floors were all covered in grim, dust and garbage from the previous tenants. The floor in the bathroom was so bad no one would go in there without shoes on. The shower was coated in grim.

Our kitchen sink isn't hooked up either. It's like its not attached to the plumbing. Also our landlord gave one set of keys to one of my roomates and when I asked for a set he gave me his and told me I had to return them and I would need to make a copy of my roommates for my own use. Is he responsible for providing us all with keys to the apartment?

I told the landlord and he said a cleaning crew was supposed to clean it and he will call them again. Its already been over 2 months since we have had the lease and he hasn;t bothered basic maintenance on the place. I'm wondering what the right course of action is to make sure the apartment is clean and working properly and that it will not be my responsibility to do so?

    Thanks

  • Turning on Power at a New Apartment?

I am moving into a new apartment. Currently the power is turned off in the apartment. I am moving in on Friday and would like there to be power when I arrive. I contacted NYSEG and was told they can turn it on but they have to come into the building, go into my apartment and the basement of the building to turn it on.

I was told I either have to leave the apartment unlocked all day for them or I have to be there from 8:30am-4:30pm to let them in (not an option because of work).

Is this normal procedure? Can the power company turn the power on from a remote location?
