  • second parrot for company and,,?

My beloved Kookoo (my original Amazon Orange wing) seems to be getting less affectionate! He doesn't preen my hair and hang out like he used to, I understand this and that's okay because he still friendly and steps up and is gentle, but I have been told he will get mean because I have another parrot. They get along somewhat, the new guy loves Kookoo, and Kookoo tolerates him, the poor little guy (Pedro) the new guy was abused and all alone in a basement for the first 15 years of his life !it does my heart good to see this little guy so happy but I don't want to lose my friend! What do you think? I am hoping my pet will not get "mean" as I have been warned! Thank you

  • My African Grey hates me!! Help!?

Okay here's the thing and please please someone out there that knows about African grays help me with this!! About 2 months ago I rescued A two year old female African Grey from a hoarding situation. She was with other African grays now she is by herself. I do have two other parros that are in a different room and that she sees daily and can hear them. She also sees me handle them just putting that in there cuz I'm trying to think of everything!! Anyway when we first brought her home on day one I did have to hold her in my hand to put her in her cage, she was fine and she did not bite me. My sister can pick her up she loves my sister! If I go near her she actually puffs up her feathers and puts her head down and charges me, she even jumped off of her cage once and flogged me! When she landed on the couch I put my finger down and told her to step up to return her to her cage and she bit me so hard my hand bled for an hour! She did step up but on the way to her cage is when she bit me. My husband he gets bit too after he gets her out she is fine. Now I am afraid of this little bird and I really think she knows that!! I am even afraid to put my hands in her cage to feed and water her! I make my husband get her out so I can feed and water her! I do not know anything about her background, except that I am her fourth home and she is two. Also one more thing the first time my husband forcefully removed her from her cage she actually growled it was the weirdest sound I've ever heard a parrot make! She is our first African Grey we took her to the vet because of course she also pulls her feathers out! The vet said she was fine physically but she was really messed up mentally from being moved around so much. I sit and talk to her I cook for her I bought her a bunch of toys, I sit by her and we watch TV I even read to her. Wil she ever like me? Ty

  • Can partots of different species?

Get along? I have 2 Amazon Orange wings and a African Grey ( she is the new one) I feel the Grey is lonely in the living room, the other two are in a different room, but our African Grey gets lots of entertainment and companionship with us. Eventually I would like them all to be in the same room do you think they will get along? I would never leave them together unsupervised! Also my African Grey has been to the veterinarian and checked out and she has completely healthy.thanx

  • My African Grey bit me to the blood!?

When we first got her she was very sweet to my husband and my sister never really liked me but wasn't mean or viscious! Yesterday I was trying to give her some food and she started fighting with the spoon and she literally flew off her cage and flogged me!! and when I picked her up to put her back in her cage she bit me to the blood what is going on? I will not fool with her anymore and my husband picks her up.when he does she bites him too but once he gets her away from her cage she calms down and is very sweet but as soon as she sees me she gets very aggressive! We are her 3rd owners and she is 2 years old and I'm not going to give up on her! If she never warms up to me, well that's OK but I definitely don't want her attacking me!! I am ashamed to say that I am actually afraid of that little tiny grey parrot-bull!! Help! PS she also is a feather -puller, but she isn't as bad as she was when we first got her! We feed her an excellent diet and got her a whole bunch of toys and interact with her she is very smart and says over 50 words . I want to help this sad, scared previously abused (came from a hoarding situation) African Grey. But I can't even clean her cage anymore! My husband has to do everything. Thanx for ANY help!!

  • When I spray my new scared African Grey?

I just adopted and African Grey who has lived in 3 different homes in two and a half years I am her fourth and final home. She is scared of everything and she is very cage aggressive she will go to my husband and is very friendly with him. Only when she is OUT of her cage! If you try to remove her from her cage when she is inside she will hurt you! We found out the hard way. anyway she is also a feather puller. We have had her at the vet and she is healthy. it is psychological our veterinarian told us she was put into too many homes to many times. The question I have is she has some spray from the vet that we must put on her 4 times a day. Of course she hates it!! Will she hate us even more when we spray her? We plan on being her final home and we do not want to stress her out any further ! But our avian vet told us to spray this on her 4 times a day. Any African Grey experts out there? Please Give us any tips or anything we can use we will really appreciate!! Ty

  • What would cause two African Greys both to "pluck "?

I put an ad out offering to rehome a few unwanted parrots. Because there is no rescue organization within 100 miles from my house! Sure enough I got a lot of replies. one in particular caught my eye, the email went like this " I have two African grays that are pluckers they're not really pretty but they are both very talkative and entertaining come and get them as soon as possible" so what are your thoughts on this parrot lovers? Besides being a sad situation what do you think I am getting into? Ty

  • Cockatoos for my 2nd parrot?

I have an Amazon orange wing parrot, and I feel I have that time. money and experience to get another parrot. The main reason is I've always wanted a cockatoo and I feel that it would be company for my other parrot. I have done a lot of research on cockatoos and found they can be feather pullers and very needy. And I have read all the negative traits. It seems that people are trying to discourage ownership of these beautiful birds. I was all ready to get my cockatoo until I read some of these internet sites! I have a lot of experience I have done a lot of research I bought the cage. I would even like to do a rescue for a cockatoo that needs a good permanent home. Are there any cockatoo people out there that have positive things to say? Thank you

  • Which is better, your parrot on your finger or your parrot on your shoulder?

My veterinarian and she is a new veterinarian it was KooKoo and I first meeting with her. she told me that letting a parrot ride on your shoulder and my parrot practically lives on my shoulder!! She said the parrot was showing dominance and it was some kind of sexual thing!! She also told me not to talk baby talk to my parents and any kind of petting is simulating sexual behavior! I was shocked! I almost started laughing! Okay I know not to pat down around. "that area" but I love my little parrot and love driving on my shoulder and spending time with me and I pet him all the time and I feel that he needs this because he is has no other parrot friends. And he needs attention and like I said he is used to spending more than half his day with me. What do you think parrot friends?

  • Is it ok to feed my Amazon parrot seed?

Okay I am confused someone please help me! I just spent almost $100 at the veterinarian to hear my parrot was obese, and that his feathers were poor quality,(( I thought they were going to BRAG on his feathers!) They scolded me for his food, and by they. I mean the veterinarian and the technician. I like to keep my parents wings long so he can fly off in case of danger but apparently my new veterinarian was unhappy about this and clip his wings when I didn't even ask her to clip them. Okay and she told me to stop talking baby talk do not let my parents get on my shoulder, not too pat him anywhere because this was some kind of sexual thing for parrots!! She didn't like that litter I used in his cage. Anyway it was a terrible experience and I disagree about the baby talk the petting. letting him ride on my shoulder he is my pet, I love him and I'm not going to stop or change anything now. I think we do great together. But I am very worried about the food .I bought their pellets brought them home and of course my parrot hated them! This seed that I buy has pellets in it the bag says its 100 percent nutritionally balanced, I buy it at a pet shop can someone help me out about the seed vs pellets? I would never feed my parents anything that would jeopardize his health or hurt his liver! That's why he goes to the vet every 6 months! And when she told me his feathers were poor quality because of the seed and had liver damage I was so upset! She wants me to have some blood work done that cost $700. So before I spend that money I want some comments from my parrot loving friends!! Ty very much.
