i'm seeing the numbers 4:44 a lot lately. does this mean i'm going to die?
3 AnswersLanguages1 decade agoone big question....?
there is a fundamental question that nobody ever asks:
WHAT THE F IS THE UNIVERSE?
is there a context for it?
did something exist before it?
is it outside the realm of "time"
if so, is it also outside the realm of "space"?
sure, we can describe it in scientific, human terms. this element is here, this formation is there. our best efforts are empirical and theoretical. pretty good, but they don't answer the questions "WHAT? and WHY?"
clearly it is much, much more than can be understood and described in terms of human thought/language/rationality.
IS THERE A PURPOSE?
IS THE UNIVERSE AN ENTITY?
ARE WE SEPARATE FROM IT? separate within it? to what extent are we parts of a universal whole? what does that whole add up to?
is there order? is it chaos? both?
seriously, what the f?
i'm talking about more than religion. which god made the earth, who died for your sins, i don't care. those concerns are PETTY.
i want to know WHAT is the universe, is god a part of it... or apart from it?
WHO AM I? WHO IS THE UNIVERSE?
is this a universal question? is it the biggest unknown known? is its asking the reason we have sentience? does it matter? what the f is life? what is death?
WHAT IS THIS EXISTENCE?
(the big bang is not an explanation- it is an origin myth/theory)
if we are truly the offspring of a random event of space gases that spontaneously came into existence, what does that mean? and how did the big bang occur? in what context/space?
where did god come from? why does he exist?
WHAT THE F IS THE UNIVERSE?????
5 AnswersAstronomy & Space1 decade agowhy are most atheists so closed minded?
read this: my background...
raised in a very religious home, i was a true believer until 18. then i threw away all religion and considered myself an atheist for 10 years. now my mind is beginning to open to the possibilities in life.
i don't understand how atheists can limit their worldview to 2 aspects- 1) what they can perceive with their physical senses, and 2) what they can rationalize logically through human thought.
my point is that the universe is unimaginably large. even here on earth, our 5 senses can perceive only a tiny segment of the electromagnetic spectrum. our brains are so limited. yes, they are the best we have, but to think human logic is the pinnacle of epistemology... you must have a god complex or a closed mind.
atheists... human reason is flawed. we're junk- junk made from space dust. imagine all possible scenarios in the universe, then multiply them by infinity. that is what we're dealing with here. THINK
(and no, christians muslims jews etc, you're not getting off the hook here. you guys are morons)
21 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agohow can i reduce sibilance (hissing) in my speech?

2 AnswersOther - Health1 decade agowhich should i see? District 9, Ponyo, or my grandmother in the hospital?
I've heard district 9 is great and I love sci fi.
I also really like Miyazaki's films and I'd like to see Ponyo in theatres.
And my grandma is in the hospital. Likely not life threatening, but she will be there for a few days.
I only have time to do one of these things.
8 AnswersPolls & Surveys1 decade agofrom where does the I Ching derive its power?
I have been consulting the I Ching about important life decisions. I feel it is a very useful tool, very powerful in fact.
I wonder where does it get its power from? Does it tap into the tao, or are the coin tosses guided by ancient spirits, or what?
Secular/skeptical and spiritual/traditional answers welcome. :)
3 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agohow to best create soil on ground that is 100% rock?
I have purchased a former rock quarry as an acreage. The ground is bare rock- no soil whatsoever.
I am thinking of laying down alternating beds of mulch, cardboard, and straw; with some red worms thrown in there to munch up the cardboard.
Does anyone know of a better/quicker way to establish soil? I realize this will be an exercise in patience, but I am looking forward to being able to sow ground cover and weeds :)
4 AnswersGarden & Landscape1 decade agocan you bonsai a fruit tree?

5 AnswersZoology1 decade agohow close would you have to be to a black bear to kill it with a 12 gauge?
i'm going on a solo backcountry hiking trip. I am not a hunter (not even close), and i hope i won't have to use the gun, but there have been a few maulings in this area already this year. It would be stupid to go out in these mountains without some protection. (northern coastal canada- near alaska). Black bears are the most likely threat, but there are also grizzlies and cougars in the area.... although i've never been bothered by either.
I would only use it if I was charged while hiking, or attacked in my tent. I'm guessing the 12 gauge won't drop a 200-300 lb bear beyond about 5 feet? Hopefully some hunters WITH EXPERIENCE can weigh in on this.
I also have the option of taking a .270 cal rifle, but i am more comfortable with the shotgun.
Thanks

1 AnswerDrawing & Illustration1 decade agowriters: how do you deal with having written something that you don't actually believe?
maybe fanning the flames a little on yahooanswers...
or perhaps writing an investigative news segment for TV...
do you try to forget about it?
get in even deeper by trying to defend it?
do you defend it automatically-- you write before thinking?
do you just let it go?
7 AnswersBooks & Authors1 decade agowhat if there is no such thing as "depression" because life actually sucks.?
consider:
life is bad. everyone knows it
everyone is depressed. naturally.
we get some relief from the misery through religion, or buying things, or having a family, etc.
but the underlying theme is misery.
therefore "depressed" is the normal state, and "happy" (distracted) is the 'disease' ie, not normal.
except for a few people like maybe buddha and jesus who were just content for whatever reason.
what if, man? what it?
