5 AnswersHorses1 decade agoWhat is a horse??????
What is a horse to you?
A horse to me is not a pet. It's a friend, or team mate. People that don't horseback ride do not know about the bond formed from the animal to it's owner. They are not like a puppy that you can cuddle with, they are more. Horses are unexplainable and hard for me to put into words. Incredible, Outrageous, Gorgeous, Loving, Happy, I could go on forever... :)
Now...what is a horse to you?
13 AnswersHorses1 decade agoPreparing for a first horse...Can you answer these 4 questions? EASY 10 POINTS FOR HORSE OWNERS!?!?
I MIGHT be getting a horse soon but I have some important questions:)
1) Once the horse arrives to it's new home, (Whether if it's at your house or riding stable) how long do you wait until you ride him in the new enviorment? (I know your supposed to let them get used to the new enviorment and new surroundings but how long does that take?)
2) What are some fun games or activities to help you bond better with your new horse? (Besides grooming...)
3) What did you do with your first horse on the first day/week you got him/her?
4) Can you give me a list of foods that are safe to feed your horse as treats?
Thanks so much!:)

27 AnswersHorses1 decade agoDoes this list contain all the expenses to horse ownership?
*Boarding (I already know the cost where I live)
*Vaccinations:
-$100 per year (In spring/only once a year)
*Floating:
-$60 (Only once a year)
*Coggins:
-$40 (Only once a year)
*Farrier:
-$100 every 4-8 weeks
*Wormer:
-$5 per tube every 2-6 weeks
*Emergency vet:
-$500 should be saved just in case of an unexpected injury
This list is not including lessons, showing, tack or the actual horse.
Did I forget any other expenses? Does anything cost more or less than what I put? Are the times for things to occur correct? (Like for the farrier, is it every 4-8 weeks? For the wormer, is it every 2-6 weeks? Etc...)
Thanks so much!!

9 AnswersHorses1 decade agoWhat do you think about prices for a hunter or jumper ?
After riding at schooling barns and show barns, I have heard many opinions on the topic of prices for hunters or jumpers. I am not one to afford a $30,000 horse. Some people say you can get a great hunter or jumper for $2,500. Others say that a $10,000 is cheap and won't be the best at hunters or jumpers.
What do you think? What's the minimun price that you think you can get a well trained, broke hunter or show jumper?
Thanks:)
(I am looking into hunters and jumpers and yes I know that the actual horse matters not only it's skills!)
8 AnswersHorses1 decade agoHorse ownership questions regarding feed/supplements and common health issues...?
So I am probably going to get a horse within the next couple years. I have the time and experience and I am working on the money part. I have been riding/jumping/training/leasing horses for 6 years and all of my trainers think I am very ready to own a horse. I know how to ride and train a horse etc... The only thing that I am worried about is feed/supplements and health issues.
I know the basic grass hay v.s. alfalfa. I am not so good when it comes to supplements because all of my lease horses never had to have them.
I know about collic and basic hoof and coat infections such as dry/cracked hoofs, bow tendon, abcess, rain rot etc...
Before owning I want to know everything just in case an important situation. But it seems like horse owners don't study all of the health stuff before owning. It seems like they learn it along the way...?
Can you please list and describe common feed/supplements(amounts of each) and common health issues so that I can start learning?
Thanks!!!:)
6 AnswersHorses1 decade agoWhat do you look for...?
What do you look for when seeing if a horses conformation is 'good'?
I know it probably depends on the breed, age, build etc but...
What parts/anatomy of the horse do you look at? A Thoroughbred for example...What would you look for?
Thanks:)

12 AnswersHorses1 decade agoPoll: Funny horse stories!?
They can be about anything, just share! I have a ton ton but here is one.
So when a couple of friends and I started riding maybe 6 years ago, we thought that we knew just about everything when really we hadn't even cantered before let alone knew what bay or a quarter horse was. We were absolutely determined to get a horse and we knew it costed money yet we didn't know how much. We thought you buy the horse then keep it somewhere for maybe $50 a month when really it's around $1000 total for farrier vet etc... We went and knocked on every door in our neighborhood and said the following:
"Hello, we were wondering if you would like to contribute to helping us by a $500 horse that we found."
Surprisingly people gave us money and we got around $100. Who knows if our parents would let us get a horse. Who knows if the horse was hot and not bombproof let alone if it even did the English discipline. But we were so proud that we got the money. Who knows where that money went but it could pay for my horses shoes now 5 years later. :)
Looking forward to some of your stories!!!
