  • Why is the electric field between parallel plates assumed to be constant?

Wherever I look, I find sources telling me that the electric field between two charged parallel plates is constant however clearly it is not. The electric field strength is based on the equation

El field=kq/r^2 where q is the charge and r is the distance from the charge. From that equation it is clear that the electric field strength will approach infinity as you approach the edges of the plates, which is nowhere near any force in the middle.

Even if you ignore the very extremes, the electric field strength varies significantly throughout the middle area of the graph, as it is the sum of an inverse function and a shifted, mirrored inverse function.

This variation in electric field strength should be significant maybe not in problems where an object is not near to the edges but especially in problems where objects travel from one end of the plates to the other.

So basically my question is why is it always assumed to be constant? Is it because the actual equation is just too complex for practical purposes and/or does the assumption have an insignificant effect on results?

  • Created in 7 days vs. Adam and Eve?

I've started reading the bible and it seems to me that these two creation stories contradict.

During the seven days God creates in order:

    (barren land)

    1. Plants

    2. Fish/Birds

    3. Mammals/all other land based animals

    4. Male and female humans.

But in garden of Eden it goes like this:

    (barren land)

    1. Man

    2. Plants

    3. Animals

    4. Woman

It doesn't make sense to me that the first two pages of the bible should contradict so blatantly so could someone please explain why these two stories don't contradict and how someone could be expected to believe in both.

  • Why is Omar Khandr being charged with war crimes?

Omar (probably) threw a grenade that killed an attacking US Soldier. How does killing an enemy soldier during a war constitute a war crime? Shouldn't he just be a POW?
