Suppose we want to estimate the fraction of SUNY students who have shoplifted. Instead of asking the incriminating question question directly, we ask each student being surveyed to toss a coin in private. If the coin lands "heads," they are to answer the question, "Have you shoplifted?" truthfully. If the coin shows "tails," they are told to always answer "yes" no matter what. If the true fraction of students who have shoplifted is in fact 0.15, and if the participants in the survey answer accurately and honestly, what is the conditional probability that a randomly chosen student who answers "yes" to the survey has in fact shoplifted?

I notice some answerers show very little respect for new learners of a topic. When students first learn something, it's not easy to them even though it may be easy to you as a master of mathematics. It bothers me when someone answers a question and says "Have you read your textbook, this is so simple?" There are certainly cases when people post questions that they could have easily found in 10 seconds had they cracked a book, but as teachers/mentors, I don't think it's a good idea to make someone feel stupid for asking a question.

Secondly, while I am ranting, if you're going to post a link to the wolframalpha explanation, why bother? Actual human words and guidance are why people ask math questions here, because they could go to wolframalpha too.

I always help you guys with math, now I need a little love! I only know basic statistics and need help with a more qualitative analysis. Here's the data and questions.

Sample mean of student GPAs = 2.73

Sample std dev = .495

Sample n = 25

Test the hypothesis Ho: Mu = 2.5 versus Ha: Mu ≠ 2.5. Calculate the P-value. (Include a sketch with the axis labeled and showing the sample mean). Use a significance level, alpha=0.05, and state your conclusion carefully in terms of GPAs.

Please help with some steps. I will understand it if you help me through the various steps of the analysis. Thanks so much!

Well, I have noticed that those who ask on Yahoo Answers (I am always answering questions in the Mathematics section) and say "guaranteed 10 points, I am desperate" are the ones who never bother to give best answer , thumbs up, nada. Have you guys noticed similar results?

Light bulbs are shipped in lots of 24. The quality control department chooses a random sample of 8 bulbs from each lot and the lot will ship if there are no defectives found in the sample. What is the probability that the lots ships (i.e., she found no defectives in the sample) with 2 defective bulbs?(Presumably the defective bulbs are in the other 16).

There is no information given about the probability of a defective light bulb. Please enlighten me!
