  • How bad is traffic 405 North during afternoon rush hour?

I'm visiting Los Angeles for a couple of days, and have an appointment in Studio City. I'm currently deciding between two hotels, one in El Segundo, or another in Koreatown. I'm arriving in LAX on a Friday @ 1pm, and need to be at my appointment at 4pm. I'm leaning more toward the El Segundo hotel, so after arriving and checking into the hotel, I most likely will start my commute toward Studio City around 2-2:30pm.

Is it enough time to make it from El Segundo to Studio City in that timeframe, or Koreatown a better location?

  • Apartment Application and Holding Fee Doesn't bound you to a lease right?

I'm applying for an Apartment, and was looking at the small print at the end of the apartment application. This particular application has me confused, as its suggesting that if I were to put down a Holding Fee and after approval of my application, I chose not to not move-in, I'm still bound by the lease terms and responsible for the full rent and marketing costs until they rent the apartment to someone else. Mind you, this is stated in the application form, and I have NOT signed a lease agreement.

Below is the actual excerpt from the application:

"The holding fee submitted with this application will reserve your apartment for occupancy on the move-in date. At that time, the holding fee will be applied as the Security Deposit. Applicant(s) may cancel this application within seventy-two hours of application submittal without penalty for full return of the holding fee. Upon approval of this application and after the initial seventy-two hour grace period, applicant(s) are irrevocably bound to the full term of the lease. Should the applicant(s) elect to cancel or fail to move-in after the seventy-two hour grace period, the applicant(s) shall continue to be responsible for the rental payments during the term of the lease or until the apartment is re-rented. Similarly, applicant(s) shall also be responsible for reimbursement of all marketing costs until the apartment is otherwise assigned or re-rented to another applicant(s)."

  • Can you use Clear Care Contact Solution with other MPS Solutions?

I've been wearing glasses for 10 years, and recently made the switch to contacts. I am using Air Optix contacts so they are monthly disposables.

I've read that using different "all-in-one" MPS contact solution on the same pair of lenses isn't the best idea. Chemical Reaction could be an issue.

I plan to use Opti-Free Puremoist most of the time, and only using Clear Care once a week. Could this be an issue?

  • Is there a way to accurately tell a Cat's age?

My Cat that I had for 10 years died last Saturday. I truly never really knew her age, but when I got her she was a kitten (still drinking Milk). I pegged her at 10 years old. When she died, she was cremated and when I got her urn back with the cremation certificate. It indicated that she was 13 years old. I listed her age with them as 10 years old. I'm not familiar with pet cremations, but do they bypass what is listed and perform their own checks on the true age of animals before cremating them? Maybe she was 13 years old, but I find that hard to believe. That would mean she was 2 or 3 years old when I got her, and I couldn't imagine a 2 year old Cat, small as my hand still drinking Milk?

  • Would you take every Friday off or alternating 4-day weekends?

If you had a choice for a span of 3 months (in regards to your work schedule), would you take off every Friday or have alternating 4-day weekends?

One weekend you will have a regular two day weekend, and the next will be the 4 day weekend, and so on for 3 months.

  • Do you stay or go home?

You are invited over to a co-workers house for a party. You've known this co-worker for a while, but this is your first time going to their home. Toward the end of the party, you find yourself tired, you somehow end up in a quiet area of the house and fall asleep.

You wake up in the middle of the night to realize you fell asleep and the house is pitch black and you have a blanket on you (obvious your co-worker was okay with you sleeping and didn't want to wake you). Do you just stay there until the morning or do you just immediately leave once you realize where you are?

You might run the risk of opening the front door and setting off the alarm, but would it be proper to wake them up before you left? What is the proper etiquette for a weird situation like this?

  • Does Lion OSX come with the Welcome Video?

I just bought an iMac with Lion preinstalled. From past experiences, when I get a new Mac a "Welcome" video plays. This did not happen on my iMac. Did Apple axe the Welcome video in Lion OSX?

  • Does Allstate pay for the extra CDW in rental cars?

I was hit by an Allstate insured driver a few weeks ago and Allstate will foot the bill for a rental car while my car is @ the body shop. I found out though that Allstate will not pay extra for a Collision Damage Waiver with Enterprise.

Does anybody know if this is normal practice, or anyway I can get them to pay for this coverage?

  • Which Body Shop should I use?

I was backed into today in a parking lot. This is my first vehicle accident ever, so I am little confused on the process. I have State Farm, the other party has Allstate. After the accident I called my insurance company to let them know what happened, they informed me to call the other parties insurance, which I did. I called Allstate gave them my info and the other drivers info and told them what happened. Now will Allstate contact my insurance company, or do I have to call my insurance company back and give them a complete description of what happened? The initial call to my insurance agent didn't get an "official" statement from me, he was just informing me to call the other insurance to file a claim, because if I filed a claim with them, I would have to pay a deductible.

Second question regards the body shop. Is it recommended to use the body shop Allstate recommends or the body shop my insurance company recommends? Allstate already said they will pay for a rental car while my car is being repaired.

  • Lukewarm/No heat while idling in Nissan Sentra?

I drive an '05 Nissan Sentra (approx. 60,000mi). in '08 I noticed that while idling (stopped at a redlight...etc.) the heat in my car would go lukewarm to cold. But once moving, hot heat would blow out. At the time the thermostat was replaced and all was well. Fast forward to end of '10 and beginning of this year, this symptom popped up again. But along with another host of issues (rough idle, low coolant). Took it too the dealer and it was a blown head gasket.

Got head gasket replace, thermostat replaced and a coolant flush.

The lukewarm at idle issue still exists. Any idea what else can cause this?

  • Serpentine belt and Drive Belt?

I got my oil changed today at the Nissan dealership. They told me that my drive belts need to be replaced (they have cracks in them).

My last oil change (before this one) was at car spa, on the check sheet, it said my serpentine belt was OK. This was back in December 2009.

I find it odd that after only about 4 months the belts now have cracks in them and need to be replaced immediately.

This is of course serpentine belt and drive belts are two different things. So are they the same thing? What is the difference?

  • Should I get brakes done at the dealership?

The warranty on my car expired a year ago, so going to the dealership is not on the top of my list anymore.

During my car inspection last year, the inspector told me that my front brakes were a little worn and they might not pass inspection next year (which is this year).

Brakes seem to be an important part that you can't just get any ol' shop to replace. Is it just better to just stuck it up and take it to the dealership to replace them? About how much to dealership charge for brake replacement?

  • Does this mean he was going to pay? Etiquette?

I was at a wedding last weekend and it was a cash bar at the reception. I was at a table with a group of co-workers. One of my co-worker's husband got up of the table and was going to head over to the bar to get another beer. He asked if anybody at the table wanted anything from the bar.

Now does this mean he was offering to pay? Or was it another way of saying "give me your money and I will buy your drink for you". Or was it an indication that I was to give him money when he came back with the drink?

I wasn't sure, so I declined his offer and went to the bar myself later in the night.

The only other times I have been in this situation, it never involved anything a pay for (i.e. I am at a family cookout and someone offers to bring back drinks from the fridge or something)

So I just wanted to fully understand what was going on, so I can know for next time!

  • Nissan Sentra Coolant/Anitfreeze level question?

Last week I noticed the level in my coolant reserve tank was below the "min" mark. This past Monday I filled up the reserve tank with more coolant all the way up to the "max" line. I checked the reserve tank today (two days later) and the coolant level is about an inch or some below the max line.

Is this normal? It's been hot (high 90s) and have been running my a/c. Is it normal, or a sign of a leak. I checked under the car and there are no signs of a leak.

  • Is there an equivalent to Nissan Antifreeze/Coolant?

I was looking under my hood the other day and I noticed my coolant level was below the min level. I read the owner's manual and it said to use Genuine Nissan Long Life Antifreeze or an equivalent (green stuff). What is a good equivalent.

I entertained the idea of buying the coolant from the dealer, but I know they are going to overcharge. Is there a cheaper equivalent at the local auto parts store I can buy?

  • Christmas Birthday etiquette?

At what date is is considered acceptable (if it is even acceptable) to buy one big gift as a birthday/christmas present, when that said birthday is near christmas?

I have a friend whose birthday is on Dec. 23rd and each year he complains when I just buy one big gift (for his birthday and christmas present). He told me that his parents treated his birthday as two separate occasions, which is fine, but I don't have the money to buy two expensive gifts.

  • Should I buy a new desktop or build one?

My aging Gateway desktop (pushing 6 years) is getting slower and slower. I have tried everything to speed it up, but it just looks like I need a new desktop.

While researching information on new desktops, I see that building your own PC is the new rage. I find myself to be somewhat tech savvy, but no where technical to build my own PC. Would it be better to just buy a pre-built one from Best Buy or Circuit City?

I already have a Macbook that I use primarily and the desktop is just for the rest of the family. There is no need to get any top of the line stuff as we don't play any games or view any high powered graphics. So a simple desktop would do.
