I'm bored and was just pondering. If one left out a clear glass of first aid-concentration peroxide in a clear cup, how long do you think until it's completely H20 and 02? Like, drinkably safe?

So I just found out about the difference between "glimmer" and regular tulle, and was wondering who has seen both. This is for my new year's eve reception inside a house, so I'll be wrapping white LED string lights in the tulle for a softer look.

Does the glimmer tulle look cheezy? Or does it add a lot of elegance? I do NOT want cheezy. :)

Let's say you owned and ran your own business, so staying closed for long periods of time wouldn't be advisable. But you also want tons of time with your new baby, of course! Would you be able to go back 2 weeks or so after delivering, even if it was for one day a week? How quickly could you go back for full days 3 days a week?

Don't know why I'm curious about this. Maybe a morbid curiosity as I approach my own wedding? haha. I'm not worried about this at all, but my own planning got me thinking about weddings in general...

Also, it'd be interesting to know if there's a correlation between the expense and hugeness of a wedding and early divorce.

I did a search and most questions are about vendors in general. I'm just wondering about the florist specifically. Should I assume that the estimate I received is not including a gratuity, or are they expecting one? It's a relatively small business (the wedding is in a rural area) and the bill will probably come to $450 with tax.

So we're having a large reception for everyone on New Year's Eve. But the day before, it'll just be me, him, and our immediate family (12 people total) and a justice of the peace who's coming over to my parents' house. So no ceremony, walking down any aisles. It'll just be us in our house, signing the certificate.

So what should I do?

~Should the three of us stand on the balcony and everyone else look up from the living room? (or vice versa)

~Should everyone stand in a circle around us and we'll say some vows?

~Should we all sit at a table?

~What do you think of this idea: Setting up a mounted canvas and having everyone taking a turn adding a bit of paint in whatever inspirational way they feel like at the moment (sort of an abstract thing.) Then we'll frame whatever turns out and hang it in our home!

ANY ideas are appreciated!!

Just yesterday I decided that our wedding colors are out the window, haha. We're having a private ceremony and big new year's eve reception, so my sister is making my gown and I chose a deep eggplant purple (so I can wear it again.) Since our colors were slate blue, sage green, and creme, there goes that!! haha. So I chose white flowers, and the flowers for inside the house will be white, purple, and blue.

Oh, and a loving guest sent a HUGE box of new year's things for when we count down to midnight, and they're every color imaginable. So we're going to have a fun time with every shade out there! :)

Also, my caterer backed out a few days ago, but the replacement food I'm getting looked MUCH more delicious anyway. :) I think it worked out for the best.

So we invited around 125 people to our New Year's Eve wedding (sent out the invites in August since it's a holiday.) I'm a dental student, so my invitees are friends from high school and home, college, and some of my dental classmates here in another city.

Two of my close dental classmates have declined. Now I'm not as intimate with my grad school friends as my long-term ones from home (grad school isn't as personable), but they're still in my social "group" and I see them every day and we hang out.

I see two legitimate reasons for their not coming: They would have to travel very far (midwest to Massachusetts), and we only get two weeks off for winter break. That's a lot to ask for any student, and I'd never want to impose and hadn't expected a lot of dental students to make it.

But the more I ruminated on this over several weeks, the more it began to bother me. These are my best friends here at school. This is a once-in-a-lifetime event. My boyfriend moved here with me so they've grown to know him as well and were thrilled when we got engaged.

So: if it is legitimately inconvenient, bad weathery, and during a short vacation, do they have every right?

Is it fair at all to think that they aren't my "true", close friends if they aren't willing to set out on an adventure to come to my wedding? I've planned a very fun event. I'm trying to be fair and just and haven't discussed it since I'm not sure if I am justified in any way.

Thoughts?

Certainly not thinking of it for my future daughter, but I just read it in a book ("Malice Aforethought" by Francis Iles) and have never heard it before. It also isn't in any baby name database that I can find.

My fiance said that it was common for British people to give their children surnames as first names, and a Google search shows that some people have Quarnian has a surname.

So our caterer backed out a few days ago for our December wedding. No problem at all (I had a rather bad feeling about him anyway), and there are luckily lots of great local restaurants that do catering. This is for a reception at my parents' house on New Year's Eve (around 100 guests.)

So the main caterer will be a gourmet Hispanic/continental Spanish restaurant that will put the food in metal warmers and we've hired servers to serve it to guests.

However, I know not everyone (including me) is a huge fan of hispanic-style food, so we're also ordering some large dishes from the local Italian/Greek place. They will be easily bakable things that we'll heat in the oven ourselves and put out on a separate table.

So my question is, which of the following dishes do you think are an all-over crowd pleaser?

~Lasagna

~Sauteed veggie lasagna

~Moussaka (The greek house specialty with eggplant and lamb, or just eggplant for vegetarians)

~Pastitsio (another Greek specialty, with beef and pasta...delicious)

~Pasta with homemade marinara sauce

~Chicken parm

~Eggplant parm

~Meatballs

I would love to include a Greek dish, but do you think people would be too wary?

Our RSVPs are through our wedding web site (that we programmed ourselves) or by telephone.

We got a lot (maybe 1/3) right after the invites went out, but they're heavily lagging now. We get maybe 1 a week and I'm eager to know who else is coming for logistics and planning.

When is an appropriate time to start politely asking everyone to reply? The wedding is this New Year's Eve, 12/31/08.

I know that it takes a while to plan travel arrangements, and that's absolutely fine. I more want to remind those who may have forgotten; not those who are still planning.

We're only having a reception, but it's a big, festive affair on New Year's Eve. It's at my parents' house and there will be a lot of guests, so we're fitting the catered food wherever we can. However, the caterer says we still have to cut something from our menu in order for him to fit it all on the serving tables. (He also thought we had too many choices for the style of reception.)

Which do you think we could go without?

1. Live carving station with roast beef

2. Live pasta station where chefs cook guests' pasta to order

3. Mexican station

4. Asian station

5. Salad/fresh veggies/fresh fruit station

Also, how many tables and chairs should we order? This will be a mingling, cocktail-style dinner, so do you think chairs for 50% will be enough? Tables for 1/3?

I was just musing on their origins. I think I may have been told ages ago, but I don't remember.

Also, why are "sol" and "so" interchangable? Is "sol" correct, but people just hear "so la ti"...and assume there isn't an L?

Since I'm in dentistry and my fiance is in IT, we thought we'd do dental-computer favors. For my half, I already ordered personalized toothbrushes.

I'm looking for suggestions for anything computer-related that are $2 or less each. We LOVED the idea of flash drives, but we can't get them for less than $5/each. Mouse pads are okay, though not a lot of people use them anymore. Any ideas?

They don't have to be personalized since we can always make stickers for them.

I hope this doesn't come across rudely at all, but I honestly want to know the normal etiquette for this sort of thing. We're only having a wedding reception (private ceremony the day before) and it'll be a catered dinner with a live string ensemble playing in the background. We're also having a photographer and are employing a college student for general cleanup and for helping guests out with whatever.

I'm a professional musician and have played at a few wedding ceremonies but never at a reception. If I WAS playing at the reception, I'd sort of expect a meal during a playing break.

So I of course want to feed all these people. Do you think any are expecting to eat beforehand and work the whole time? I know I shouldn't do something tacky like remove the price of the plate from their salary, but I also am a bit shy to ask them if they "want" to be fed?

So at this point I was just thinking of including them in the head count and paying for each of them ($33/person.) Good?

So I was staring at my periodic table shower curtain (which rocks, by the way), and I was pondering. It's been about 5 years since chemistry, so sorry if this is a dumb question.

Anyway, if protons are generally the same mass, why does the addition of 1 proton (for each element) have such different changes on the atomic mass? The density is related to volume, so I don't think that has to do with it. Is it because of the mass of neutrons?
