  • Atheists- How worried are you that the God Particle is close to being verified?

I know "God Particle" is just a term but I am sure you realize that from a physics standpoint, this will probably show that the Big Bang did not start from nothing, that it had a genesis or creator....maybe even a design. Probably a long way off from further discoveries but it points in that direction. A big blow to Big Bang atheists theorists.

  • Where is the recapitualtion in the 1st Mvt of Sibelius 5th?

I always love hearing opinions regarding where the recapitulation starts in the first movement of Sibelius 5th symphony. Do you agree with many musicologists that it starts with Scherzo repeat after the conclusion of the Trio? I tend to agree it starts at that point.

I am fascinated to hear your opinion. Thanks.

  • What is the most original use of stacked fourths in a piano composition?

In your opinion that is. Feel free to give examples. Especially when it comes to harmonic movement and cadences of various types.

  • Atheists-What is your opinion of the faith issue and the big bang?

My wife's cousin who is a physicist ran this by us the other night. He told me that it takes just as much faith to believe that the big bang was created out of nothing and had no initial "design" as it is to believe that a creator was the cause of the big bang. It has to do with what we know (or don't know) about quantum mechanics. He went on to say that atheists must have just as much faith that the big bang had no creator as a someone who believes that the BB was started by a entity with god like powers.

Of course the BB is only one issue when it comes to theism so it is not the end all to anyone's formation of their belief.

  • Atheists and Agnostics-Does it bother you that you could never be elected President?

With all this Santorum stuff-the guy is way out-I was wondering what you guys thought of this.

Us non believers would not even get on the ballot. Too bad the majority of the country are not with us.

  • Atheists-Would you change your beliefs for any reason?

I am agnostic. A childhood friend of mine was recently engaged. He was an atheist for as long as I can remember. I just got an invitation to his wedding and was stunned. He is being married in the Catholic faith!

I can't blame him. His wife to be is pretty hot and her parents are loaded. My guess is he will still be a "closet atheist".

My question is...would most of you do the same? Would you go so far as to say "I was wrong in the past I believe in Christ"?

To be married to her, I think I might do the same. "Baby I was wrong!"

  • Atheists-What was your "eureka" moment?

When did you come to believe that God does not exist? Was it early or later in life? Maybe a certain book or course of studies or a personal influence? If you were raised in a certain religion, when did you realize it was bull? A life event? Just curious.

I am Agnostic and came to my conclusions in my Thirties.

  • Why do most atheists ask for religious contact on their deathbed?

My wife is a critical care nurse and my cousin is a doctor in a hospital in a major city. This issue comes up often. My wife and cousin have seen in the majority of cases where patients that claim they have been atheists throughout their lives change their minds when death is inevitable and ask for a minister and in some cases a priest. They respond to asking for forgiveness for their sins.

In some cases, they have seen where the atheists will stand by their convictions and tell them they do now want any religious intervention since they do not believe in a God or hereafter.

However, the majority ask for intervention.

I have no reason to make this up. It would be curious to see the statistics on this. I am agnostic. I am not sure when faced with death if I will turn away religious intervention.

  • Atheists-Is there anything that you believe in or take for granted but is not proven?

I mean ANYTHING. Do you feel that makes you a hypocrite somewhat if you do? I am agnostic.

  • Atheists- If Einstein had proven his Unified Field Theory...?

would you still not believe? Scientists are close to proving this theory. Would you still cling to your belief that the existence of God is unproven? What do you think it would take to change your mind?

Would it have to be nothing short of God dropping by for coffee? Or do think that humans are simply not capable of proving their is a creator?

    Ps- I am Agnostic

  • Why are Atheists so defensive and presumptive here?

Every time I ask Athiests a question regarding their belief, they presume I am a believer. I have seen this over and over in this forum. I am Agnostic with a leaning more towards Atheism. Many immediately go on the defensive and throw insults. This happens even with questions out of curiosity that are not meant to "put down" atheists.

  • Atheists-Hypothetically asking....?

if anything would convince you to believe the possibility exists that there is a creator? Would a scientific discovery that a majority of scientists say proves there is a creator or would you still "stick to your guns" and say you still don't believe. Is there anything other than "the creator" standing in front of you shaking your hand that would make you believe? Just curious if any atheists believe something could change your opinion.

  • Atheists-How can you discount scientific facts when...?

you don't know the first thing about their basis? I am agnostic and one of my friends asked me this. I must say he got me on this one. Since I am not a scientist, I can only look to scientists that believe there are no scientific discoveries that prove the existence of a creator. He responded with "so you base your opinion solely on the opinion of another person without truly understanding how they came to their conclusion. " "Since there are scientists that believe in a creator, why don't I believe in their opinion?" SO, my belief really has no basis. Guess I better learn some science so I can tell him why the scientists that believe are wrong and have no basis for their belief.

  • Why do many atheists ask for some type of religious attendance on their death beds?

My wife is an ICU nurse and sees many people die. We are agnostic. There is not a week that goes by when she will tell me of a patient that stated or provided on forms that they were atheist and yet, when they are informed of their chance of imminent death they request a chaplin or some other religious attendance. Have any other atheists been in a similar situation with fellow atheists?

  • Atheists why is it that?

You toss off anyone that states they have personally experienced God's help because they cannot prove it and yet, theists are supposed to believe you when you state you have never experienced God first hand? It all comes down to belief doesn't it? You cannot prove that you have never experienced God and a theist cannot prove that they have.

I am agnostic and a friend of mine posed this to me. Sounds kinda dumb.

  • How can we agnostics and atheists...?

Call a view held by less than 10% of the American population "common sense"?

A friend of mine hit me with this one and I got tongue tied. He was joking of course.

I always thought that Sibelius was the master of modes even more so than the great Russian composers. Agree?

  • What would it take atheists to believe?

I am an agnostic. I cannot say with certainty that there is no possibility that God exists simply because there is no evidence that one does exist. I cannot "go all the way" because of the great minds that have believed God may exist. I realize great minds were Atheists also but I like to keep an open mind so...I ask...what if it was "proven" scientifically that God does exist. Let's say one scientist did not accept the findings. Would atheists hang on to their position of not believing?

It is kind of ironic since humankind will never prove God's existence due to the complexities of everything around us. Even if someone did prove it, only the greatest scientific minds could say they believe or disbelieve since they would be the only humans who could understand the processes involved. It really leaves us agnostics and atheists with nothing but paper dolls on which to hang our "beliefs".

In short what is a "belief" worth if you could never understand the mechanics involved if your belief was dis proven?
