This is in regards to another question where someone asked, since a co-worker has a religious message on a sign on their desk at work, if it would be acceptable for an atheist to put up a similar sign with an inspirational message declaring their lack of belief.

It seemed that most Christians thought this was a very bad idea. More than one were downright insulting, calling this person stupid. Most said they should "leave this person alone" and not put up a sign like that because it could offend someone. I think they actually have a valid argument, but I noticed a double standard. Why is the religious co-worker not shamed into leaving the non-Christians at work alone and taking down their religious inspirational posters? Why is one group afforded more freedom, and how can you justify this inequity?

What purpose does it serve? The dictionary says "people's beliefs and opinions concerning the existence, nature, and worship of a deity or deities, and divine involvement in the universe and human life." People here say all kinds of different things than that define a religion. Why is that definition not good enough, and what are you trying to accomplish by changing it?

I have been told by Christians that atheists cannot truly be good because they lack a moral framework like religion on which to base their morals. By what moral judgment, then, can you tell if a particular framework itself is good or evil? How does this differ from the morality of "just following orders?"

This is totally untrue. There is no way I would eat your planet in its current state. It would lower my IQ to ingest it as is. It needs some work first.

Why? And which one are you more concerned about?

Or anybody else for that matter. Would you take their word for it, or would you need some physical evidence of some kind?

I can't decide. Is it that we will not renew failed Republican economic policies that have done so much damage to our country? Is it that the Supreme Court will not be packed with more right-wing loonies? Or is it watching all the conservatives cry like little babies the day after? I honestly can't decide.

Is the evidence left behind by the crime enough proof for a conviction, or should we let everyone who was convicted on forensics for rape or murder be released into your neighborhood immediately?

Should kids be beaten by parents and teachers, or do you think this is counter-productive?

...and all the Christians and other theists were upset that you made it in without wasting your life on a religion? Would you gloat and rub it in?

Driving drunk is a terrible thing that should not be tolerated, but I can't find any mention of it in the Bible. I can't find any mention of motor vehicle operation at all to be honest. It must be there, though, otherwise I have no explanation for this:

You have the Spanish Inquisition, Nazi Germany, and modern Conservative Christians, the only times in history homosexuality has been actively sought out for punishment. Are you sure this is the company you want to keep?

Most of my coworkers are the same race as me. Often we will be letting off steam about frustrating customers, and my coworkers often feel the need to point out the person's race and make subtly offensive remarks about their ethnicity. This often includes management. I have not observed any actual discrimination take place, and they are obviously not discriminating against me. Besides confronting them and telling them to shut up, what can be done?
