I'm a geek, childbirth educator, author, and father of 3. I answer a whole lot of different question types and try hard to make the answers worth reading.

  • Do leaseholds go up in value like freeholds?

I've bought and sold plenty of houses in the US, but I'm new to the UK. The concept of a "leasehold" doesn't exist in the US.

If I buy property that is a leasehold and I keep it 3 or 4 years, will it be more valuable when I sell it? I assume freeholds work this way, because I think that's the same as how we buy and sell property in the US. But if the property appreciates in value, and I have a leasehold, will that make it possible for me to sell it at a higher value later?

Where can I read up on the different kinds of UK real estate transactions?

  • Which Cuban cigars to try in London, and where?

I'm going to spend a couple weeks in London—more than enough time to enjoy a good Cuban cigar. Which ones should I try?

To give you a basis, I typically smoke Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 perfectos or Oliva Serie V lanceros. I also like Cameroon wrappers.

Where in London is a good place to smoke such things?

  • What vampire movie to show my 6-year-old?

My 6-year-old boy wants to be a vampire for Halloween. He has some of the vague details about the vampire in his head (sharp teeth, drinks blood, wears a cape). Today's horror movies are entirely too graphic and frightening to show him even tiny snippets. I don't want to show him some candy coated Dora The Explorer crap or Elmo the vampire thing.

Does anyone know a classic Boris Karloff-style movie and whether it might not be so graphic? I've never seen them myself, so I don't know if any are mild enough to scare, but not terrify my son. I want him to get the genre, get the style, get a little scared, but not be so terrified he cant sleep for weeks.

  • Where do I find elastic to fix tent poles?

I have a tent (sierra designs, but i don't think that matters). It's got collapsing aluminum poles that are about 10 segments of 18" length each. If you've seen modern tents, you know what I'm talking about.

The problem is that the tent is a few years old now, and the elastic inside the poles is dry-rotted. It doesn't have any spring left in it, so the poles don't snap together firmly. I need to replace the elastic string inside, (so about and I'm wondering where I might get something like it. there's also the question of how much to buy. When fully extended, the poles are about 15' long. But I know the elastic needs to be a bit longer than that to have enough slack to collapse. I can't use the old elastic as a guide, since it's all rotted.

Any campers out there with ideas? This will require about 45 feet of elastic minimum, so I need to find a relatively economical way to buy it.
