I'm 25, currently in school, and moving along the journey to conversion to Judaism, after being raised Christian and then becoming atheist until G-d found me again. My blog is here: http://brightvagabond.wordpress.com/

  • Jewish friends: Some concerns I'm having about my choir...?

Okay, so I belong to a choir that travels around our area and visits retirement communities and hospitals and sings for the patients/residents. It's usually a lot of fun, we do things like the Andrews Sisters, and on Wednesday we're doing our Thanksgiving show with pieces like Turkey Lurkey Time.

Unfortunately, I just got our "Winter" show, which prior to this year has always been secular, or really close to it. Things like Baby It's Cold Outside, Santa Baby and Winter Wonderland. This year, it's...not. It's a Christmas cantata -- songs about the virgin birth, the annunciation, the crucifixion -- and looking over it, I don't really feel comfortable singing things like "Come oh come Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel" but the worst one is probably the second to last: where we get this gem:

"Could the Father’s will be done through the suffering on His Son?

And there comes the answer, “Once upon a tree.”

For God so loved the world, He gave His priceless pearl.

What greater love could there be?

He died, He rose again, still the story doesn’t end,

For His spirit is living in me.

I made a commitment in January to sing with the choir for a year, and signed a paper saying I would -- but this feels so WRONG. It feels like blasphemy, even if I haven't finished my conversion yet. And it's worsened by the fact that the director wants me to sing the "Mary" solos.

    How would you handle this?

  • Question about Tznius/Tzniut?

I'm converting to Judaism and trying to include more and more commands in my daily life as I go along. I'm in school to enter the dental field, and am required to wear scrubs, labcoats, and sneakers. I can wear long-sleeved shirts under the short-sleeved scrubs, but are the loose scrub pants reasonably modest?
