  • How to create a MS DOS .bat file to serial encode an 'n' amount of files?

Suppose I'd like to convert all files from wav to m4a, but the conversion program (Nero AAC, which is cmd based), only allows one conversion at a time, and does not support wildcard characters.

I don't want to restart the command after every file, and want to create a batch file in MS DOS that will convert *ALL* files, one after the other, of one directory.

a bat file would be easy if we're talking about only 3 files to convert,

in such case I could easily type each name of the input and output file.

Nero AAC uses this command to function:

    aacencoder -q 0.12 -if 1.wav -of 1.m4a

    aacencoder being the program

-q 0.12 being the quality setting used

    -if input file

    1.wav input file name

    -of output file

    1.m4a output file name

The programs syntax remains largely the same, with only variations the input and output filename (1.wav and 1.m4a)

If you understand programming I wished wildcards would work, then the code would look like this:

    aacencoder -q 0.12 -if *.wav -of *.m4a

Now I need to find out how I can circumvent the '*' limitation of the program with a batch file.

any ideas how to solve this?

  • does it matter where I plug my DDR3 ram in?

On a mobo, having 4 slots, does it matter if I plug the memory in slot 1 and 2, or 1 and 3?

Would there be a performance difference?

  • Remote control to turn off media center pc?

i'd like to know if there are any remotes sold that could not only play/pause/ff/rew/stop a movie, but also turn off my book sized media center pc.

It does not have bluetooth, nor IR, but has some USB ports available.

It's only for the bedroom, so I don't really need a fancy one.

    Suggestions?

  • how much memory for my corei5 2500k?

As you may know the corei5 supports 4 channels of DDR3 memory,

I know adding a second ram stick significantly improves iops; and adding a third one increases performance even more.

I wanted to know if it's usefull to install 4 sticks of ram or keep it with three.

I generally don't want my system to be overburdened and using too much power, all for only a small increase in speed.

Should I buy a mobo with only 3 RAM slots, or one with 4?

Will the 4th slot present, affect RAM speed even if only 3 of 4 slots are utilized?

  • half resolutions on 1080p LCD stretched?

I'm in the process of buying an LCD screen for my computer. Since most LCD's are 1080p, I wondered how well they would support half resolution stretched, 1920x1080 / 2 = 960 x 540.

Unfortunately 1600x1200 displays aren't commonly sold anymore, or are very expensive, or I would be able to play back old dos games full screen super crisp at 800x600 resolution.

In other words, I expect on a stretched fullscreen to see pretty crisp image, every pixel theoretically displayed on a cluster of 4.

Any other resolution should make the image quite blurry (unlike for instance a CTR monitor that easily can display switch between resolutions and still remain crisp)

  • How does displayport work?

So imagine I have bought a Radeon 5770, it has 1 DVI, 1 HDMI, and 1 display port.

If I want to connect it to 3 monitors, I suppose I could connect the DVI to my monitor, the vga to my TV and the displayport to a vga or dvi adapter.

What if I want to connect 3, 4, 5 or 6xDVI monitors to the card?

    How does that work?

  • 'complex' math question, how to solve?

First of all, this is no homework, I've been out of school for over 10 years now, but forgot the mathematical method on how to solve this question:

Anna wants to save $15.000 in 10 months time, and the first month she manages to save little.

However the month after that she saved twice what she had saved before.

Every coming month she saves double of what she saved the month before, and finishes her savings 3 months early.

How much did she save that first month?

As you may see from the numbers, this is no school question, I can not receive any points or rewards from solving this situation, other than increasing my knowledge.

I would like to know how you solve the issue. The correct end result is of less importance to me than the way or route to solving the issue.

At the moment I use MS excel, and use an approaching method, that I increase the initial monthly savings, until the end result after 7 months comes close to, or on the desired savings amount.

Which is kind of a backwards way of solving something that should be solvable with basic mathematics.

    Your help is greatly appreciated!

  • Is a 5500k fluorescent bulb good for studio light?

My wife has a small studio, and one of the bulbs broke. An umbrella light fell over and the fluorescent 30W bulb broke (type pb-30).

I think to replace it with another more powerful (65W) bulb (is ok, the umbrella supports upto 85W), but online they say the new bulb has 5500k light.

I remember buying a regular fluorescent lightbulb, and it was too yellow for pictures.

Is 5500k a good color for studio light (bright white, not yellow or blue.)?
