  • How do Republicans say with a straight face....?

that Ronald Reagan was a fantastic President who clearly deserved his blowout win for a second term but Obama is one of the worst Presidents and base this primarily on their performance on jobs?

    Ronald Reagan

    - January 1981 - Unemployment - 7.5%

    - September 1984 - Unemployment - 7.3%

    Barack Obama

    - January 2009 - Unemployment - 8.5%

    - September 2012 - Unemployment 7.8%

And just to answer the next point, Reagan nearly doubled the debt (spent more than all other President's before him combined) in his first term. Obama's record is clearly at least equal if not superior on its face

  • I wonder why Republicans have stopped talking about voter fraud?

Now that it turns out they have been engaging in outright fraud in 5 swing states. Do you think there's a connection?

  • A serious question about the conventions and current polarization?

I will confess to being a progressive and a Democrat. But even more, I have always been a political junkie. In years past, I have watched many, many hours of both conventions soaking up the atmosphere and rhetoric.

Even in 2008, I probably watched 6-8 hours of coverage of the GOP convention. This year, however, I found myself unable to watch the GOP convention. I tuned in on the last night to watch Romney and that was all. I think the anger just made it very difficult for me.

My question is for people who follow both parties. Did you watch the convention of the other party and, if so, did you watch less than in previous years? I'm curious to see if I'm alone in the feeling that the polarization has gotten out of hand and made it impossible for us to accomplish great things anymore.

  • What is the Christian view of the Crusades?

In Judaism, we just finished a holiday where we talk a lot about the persecution that took place during the Crusades. To us, they rank just below the Holocaust (and perhaps the inquisition) in level of heinousness with 10's of thousands of European Jews murdered. I have seen descriptions of them as noble in the past and wonder what modern Christians think.

  • Mitt Romney gave John McCain 23 years of Tax returns...?

...when he wanted to be picked for VP. McCain picked Palin instead. Now, Romney is only releasing 1 year of tax returns. Coincidence? I don't think so! People with nothing to hide, don't hide.

  • Whoops Tea Partiers! Tax Rate under Obama lowest in 30 years!?

The CBO just issued a report that shows that the average tax rate paid by Americans in Obama's first year, 2009, was 17.4%, the lowest rate in 30 years! Facts are stubborn things aren't they?

It's past time for those making over $250,000 to pay what they paid under Clinton when we had prosperity and nearly balanced budgets.

  • Get used to it Conservatives?

In order to 'repeal' the Affordable Care Act, Republicans would not only need to win the Presidency and keep the House, they would also need to pick up at least 13 additional Senate seats. There is virtually no chance of this happening so the ACA will be the law of the land for the foreseeable future.

  • Does anyone else see the irony?

of Mitt Romney saying that marriage has been between 1 man and 1 woman for 3000 years? It's fine for him to believe that it should be that way but considering that his great-grandfather had 12 wives, he certainly should know better.

  • Will the people who said that all they needed to know to vote against Obama was that gas prices had gone up?

...now vote for him since gas prices are coming back down and are lower than at the same time in 2008?

I don't personally think that Presidents have much control over gas prices (aside from going to war in the Middle East) but there were those who cited rising gas prices as their main (or sole) reason for opposing him. I guess now they will either have to eat their words or vote Obama.

  • Would you vote to re-elect this President sight unseen?

He took office during a financial crisis and when our country was not very well respected in the rest of the world. By the end of his second year in office, he had driven the unemployment rate to levels not seen for nearly 50 years. In fact, unemployment was so bad that it remained at or above 8% for 26 straight months, something that hadn’t happened since the Great Depression.

By the end of his first term, the annual budget deficit had doubled and he had more than doubled the national debt.

On the positive side, he regained some of our national prestige and by April of the last year of his first term, unemployment had almost gone down to where it was when he took over.

Without a name or picture, would you vote to re-elect this President?

  • Gas Prices have Doubled?

Among the silly claims that Republicans like to make about Obama, this has to be among the most ridiculous.

Some Facts: On May 1, 2008 (under Bush) the average price of a gallon of gas was $3.62 (and rising). On May 1, 2012 (under Obama) the average price of a gallon of gas was $3.81 (and falling). When you take into account inflation, gas is actually cheaper today than at the same time in 2008.

The only reason that gas prices were so low when Obama took office is that the economy had collapsed and demand disappeared virtually overnight. You really want to give Bush credit for that or blame Obama for the economy recovering and gas prices along with it?

  • Why do some continue to claim that the stimulus package was a waste of $800 billion?

First of all, approximately $237 billion of it was tax cuts which I assume Republicans supported.

Secondly, the non-partisan CBO has estimated that as many as 6.8 million Americans currently employed owe their jobs to the stimulus act. They also say that GDP is substantially higher than it otherwise would have been without the stimulus act. We were heading towards a depression and Obama's leadership in getting the stimulus act passed averted a disaster.

  • Is it time for Republicans to realize that they are quickly becoming an endangered species?

If you add up the electoral votes in every state that voted Democratic in the past 5 presidential elections, you are already at 242 Electoral votes, only 28 shy of victory.

If you add up the electoral votes in every state that voted Republican in the past 5 presidential elections, you are at 110 Electoral votes.

The demographics were already against them before they decided to tick off Women (53% of the electorate, African-Americans (13%) and Latinos (9%).

Barring a major adjustment away from their current policies (unlikely until the Tea Party dies), we are looking at a Democratic decade or two much like we saw for Republicans from 1968-1992 where they won 5 out of 6 Presidential elections.

  • Will Mitt's approval rating prove to be his undoing?

Everyone talks about Obama's approval rating and how no President has won re-election with a rating below 50%. What they neglect is how low his opponent's approval rating is.

Romney currently has the lowest approval rating for any major Presidential candidate since Mondale in 1984 and we all know how that one turned out. I think we may be looking at a smaller degree landslide this year (somewhere between 1984 and 2008).
