  • What's the best way to acknowledge a layoff in a job application?

I was laid off from my job last week for economic reasons, not performance reasons. I had written in one cover letter that I have immediate availability due to layoffs at my prior employer. Is this the best way to address the situation? I was only at this position for four months so I think it looks a little sketchy if I don't provide some type of explanation. (My prior job tenure is excellent).

  • What is a good starter sewing machine?

I'm looking for a basic model that will be good for repairs as well as creating clothing. I currently do a lot of hand work with vintage clothing and need a machine that will help with more labor intensive repairs (loose hems, replacing zippers).

  • R&P, what's your sign?

How many song, album, or band names can you come up with that mention signs of the zodiac or other things astrology related?

Here's one to get started: Scorpio Rising by 10,000 Maniacs.

  • Have you noticed shorter American tours by UK acts?

Just wondering if anyone else had noticed their favorite artists from the UK making abbreviated tours of the US. For example, the Siouxsie US tour this February consisted of two shows in NYC and a few California dates. This is very similar to the Jesus and Mary Chain tour last year, which included NYC, a couple of California shows, and Denver, CO. Is this a new trend for UK acts?

  • Least favorite album art from your favorite band(s)?

I've seen lots of questions about good album art, but how about the bad or just plain ugly ones?

The cover for Speak and Spell by Depeche Mode is on my list:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speak_%26_Spell_%28al...

I'm also not fond of the cover for Out of Time by R.E.M. - I used to flip the CD booklet around and put the image with the fruits and flowers on top instead:

  • How do you deal with a boss who is a verbal bully?

Our new manager started about a month ago. She is very sharp-tongued and seems to enjoy cutting people down verbally. It's not so much the words she uses as the tone of voice she uses to deliver them. I've gotten to the point where I speak to her as little as possible to avoid confrontation. Essentially, I've put her on "ignore." Any other suggestions or helpful hints for dealing with this personality type?

  • Has a cover ever sparked your interest in the original artist?

Has a cover ever sparked your interest in the original artist?

For example, Echo and the Bunnymen's cover of People Are Strange prompted me to investigate the music of the Doors. And I didn't know much about Leonard Cohen until I heard Concrete Blonde's cover of Everybody Knows and it piqued my curiosity.

  • If you could pick one singer or musician to be the DJ?

If you could pick one singer or musician to be the DJ at your next party, who would you pick?

I'd probably go for Fred Schneider from the B-52s, mostly because I think he would have a really cool record collection!

    Happy rainy Friday, everyone!

What are your favorite songs about a specific movie or movie star?

Mine: Suburbia by the Pet Shop Boys (inspired by the movie of the same title)

I Could Be Again by Siouxsie and the Banshees, about the Norma Desmond character from Sunset Boulevard

  • Do you practice random acts of kindness on R&P?

I was thinking about Jem's question the other day about meanies:

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AjUc....

On the flip side, do you sometimes find yourself doing nice things for your R&P compatriots? Such as:

    Being the anonymous thumbs-up'er

Starring people's questions so they can get more responses

    Being kind to newbies

Writing thoughtful answers instead of "idk? never heard of them"

  • Strange/funny juxtapositions in your music collection?

Alphabetizing your CDs can make for some strange and/or funny bedfellows. I have Jack Off Jill, Jane's Addiction, and then Jars of Clay (!) on adjoining pages in my CD binder. Who are the weirdest musical buddies in your collection?

  • Will the Sundays ever come back from hiatus?

I know that Harriet Wheeler and David Gavurin took time off to raise their kids, but it's been 10 years since Static and Silence came out. Even a single or an EP would be great...

  • Have you ever worn out a cassette? What album(s)?

These are the ones I've killed by overplaying (not the ones that were eaten by a tape deck!):

Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols

    Black Celebration - Depeche Mode

The Head on the Door - The Cure

In My Tribe - 10,000 Maniacs

Pretty Hate Machine - Nine Inch Nails

  • Albums that should be reissued on CD?

What albums would you like to see reissued on CD? Here's a few of mine - these are ones that are out of print on CD and hard to find:

Opal - Happy Nightmare, Baby. Precursor to Mazzy Star with Kendra Smith on vocals instead of Hope Sandoval.

Ministry - With Sympathy. I know Al Jourgensen disowns this one, but hey, it was 1983. Everybody had bad hair and cheesy synths.

The Damned - Anything. Well, at least Phantasmagoria is available on import.

Joe Strummer - Earthquake Weather. You'd think Sony would be cashing in with the new Strummer documentary coming out.

  • Dry cleaner(s) in Houston familar with vintage clothing?

Can anyone recommend a dry cleaners in Houston that would be knowledgeable about vintage clothing? Not looking to preserve a wedding dress, just need to freshen up some 1940s rayon dresses that are too fragile to launder.

  • Any Houston TX stores similar to Smash in DC or Zipperhead in Philly?

I'm fairly new to Houston and looking for alternative, punk, freak and/or goth type stores that sell cool shoes. Looking for independent, non-corporate type stores that may also have music and clothing. **Not Hot Topic!!**

  • Violent Femmes song in Wendy's ad - who's next?

It cracks me up that Wendy's is using an instrumental version of Blister in the Sun in their new ad campaign - guess the lyrics would be a little too offensive for the burger buying public :) I've also heard the Jam - Start (Cadillac ad) and The The - This is the Day (M & M's) in recent weeks.

Just wondering which punk or alternative band will be next... your thoughts?
