Apostrophes when a word already has one?
I'm currently brushing up my punctuation and grammar.
While searching for examples of apostrophe use, I came across an article about how the bookshop "Waterstone's" is dropping the apostrophe from its name. This got me thinking. In the days when they had used the name "Waterstone's", how would you say something like, "I knocked on Waterstone's door"?
The door belongs to the shop, so you'd add an 's, but it already has 's.
What about if you visited many Waterstone's and knocked on all their doors?
"I knocked on all Waterstones' doors"???
1 AnswerWords & Wordplay7 years agoCan you use an not-real top level domain ending with the Hosts file?
I was experimenting with Hosts file just to see how they worked.
Eg pointing router.com to 192.168.1.1
But then I tried pointing things like somethingelse.xyz to an IP, they wouldn't work.
Do hostfiles not work with these not-real domain endings?
I'd have though that with new tdls being made up all the time now, they would'nt have that restriction?
1 AnswerOther - Computers8 years agoBest current xbox multiplayer (for a newbie)?
I'm completely new to the xbox after just playing games on my PC for years. Currently working my way through Halo series (Finishing up 2 now) but want to get into multi-player games. Black Ops 2 seems to be the one that's hot right now. Could someone who's not played a COD game before get to grips with it easily or is it for more experienced players only? Any other game I should consider?
Thinking of Black OPs 2 because am looking for one game that's really hot and current while the rest of the ones I buy will probably be older ones I've heard about over the years and want to give a try.
6 AnswersXbox8 years agoSetting up secure wireless for easiest new connection?
Just got my first ever laptop so I'm completely new to setting up wireless.
I was trying to configure a Belkin router to be secure but didn't know what settings to pick. I'd heard it should be WPA so I picked WPA2-PSK with AES.
When I tried to connect my laptop Vista told me that it couldn't connect and I would have to go into the settings and specify the type of connection (Sorry can't remember the exact wording of the message). So I went into the settings for the connection and told it WPA2-PSK with AES
This all works fine now but in future I want any device that comes in (e.g. friends laptops) just to be able to connect immediately after I give them the password without going into settings. I assume this is possible?
Is it that I've setup the wrong encryption type that Windows can't use without configuration?
Or what else could I be doing wrong?
2 AnswersComputer Networking1 decade agoExcel - Omit blank rows?
Hi
I'm doing something in Excel where I have a list of numbers but some of the rows are blank
e.g
A1 23
A2 26
A3
A4 12
A5
A6 56
and I want a way to automatically copy the numbers to another part of the sheet but omitting the blanks so I'll have
X1 23
X2 26
X3 12
X4 56
Anyone know how to do this?
The blank rows don't have to be blank, I could put "None" or other text in them.
2 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoIs USB hub 2.0 or 1.1?
I just plugged in a USB hub I bought last year. Unfortunately I've lost the packaging and any instructions.
When I plug anything into it I get "The USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi Speed USB 2.0 port. For list of available port click here.” (even if there is just one thing connected to the hub).
So I'm wondering if this hub is 2.0 or 1.1
My question is do USB 2 hubs throw up that warning as well just as routine or does this indicate that it's a USB1.1 hub?
Is there any other way to tell - can't see anything in Device Manager.
thanks
6 AnswersAdd-ons1 decade agoUSB keyboard and recovery?
I'm just about to buy a keyboard and I notice it's USB.
Will it work in Safe Mode?
If I have to recover my system (XP) will it work OK during the re-install process?
I imagine when fixing things PS/2 is probably the default and am not sure if all will work when there are any problems.
2 AnswersOther - Hardware1 decade agoAol OpenRide?
My AOL 9 software has just died - again.
I never use the horrible stuff, but I like having it there in case I want to click on an AOL link or check for help on their forums.
I've heard that OpenRide does a lot of the stuff that the suite does, but isn't as bad.
Anyone know what it can and can't do compared to AOL9?
Will it open AOL links, let me into the forums?
Does it make as big a mess of your PC as the suite does?
1 AnswerSoftware1 decade agoViewing a redirect page?
Often websites will send you to a website via a redirect page.
I would quite like to see the redirect page so that I can see what the real link is (and hence what affiliate scheme is being used etc).
Is there any way to view this redirect page? - Other than just trying to click 'stop' at just the right time.
I use Firefox.

I tried using Keynote ( http://www.tranglos.com/free/keynote.html )and I quite liked it, but I don't much like using software which is no longer being developed or improved. I'm now trying Evernote( http://www.evernote.com/ ). Are there any other good ones out there before I commit?
