What is this irish/scottish vocal/singing trick called?
I hear this vocal maneuver (if you will) a lot in celtic/scottish/irish songs. For example, the singer in the link below (Roy Williamson from the Corries singing Loch Lomond) does it at (approximately) 0:23, 0:33, 0:57 ... just about the end of every phrase.

I might call it yodeling, but it sounds so much more light and breezy than one would think if it were called yodeling. A friend suggested "lilting," but this actually refers to a different style of singing similar to "scat" singing where a lot of nonsense words are strung together musically. The only other word I can think of for it is "ululating." Does this vocal trick actually have a name of its own?

Is there a way to tie the eyedropper tool into a hot key so that I don't have to move my mouse over to the toolbar to click it every time I want to pick up a new color? I thought there might have been one, but after searching the Help file, I can't find any mention of it.
2 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoCan a man be a carrier for a yeast infection?
Before I started dating my boyfriend, I'd never had a yeast infection. Since we've been together (about a year), I've had four or five cases of yeast infection. He's also said that in the past, his girlfriends have told him similar things, that they didn't have problems with yeast infections before they were with him. He takes showers every day and generally keeps pretty clean. No, he doesn't cheat on me, so he's not getting it from another woman.
So can a man be the cause for a yeast infection in a woman?
Women's Health1 decade agoLots of Caffeine = Green rings on fingers?
I recently asked a jewelry seller why people sometimes get green rings on their fingers from sterling silver rings. He told me that it happens more often in people who drink lots of caffeine or lots of tomato juice, and that it's nothing to do with the quality of the ring.
Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. I read that sometimes there is a copper residue left over after the cleaning process on the ring. Supposedly that copper residue is what actually turns your skin green and cleaning the ring with ammonia is supposed to remove the copper residue and keep the ring from causing the reaction.
Which is right? Or are they both right, or both wrong? What property of caffeine or tomato juice would make someone more susceptible to reactions to sterling silver?
2 AnswersOther - Science1 decade agoWhat is a good cubicle plant?
I am looking for a good potted plant for my cubicle, but I have certain restrictions. I would like it to be a flowering plant that does not grow very tall (we have a height limit in our cubes). It needs to do well in fluorescent lighting, but the light is on most of the time and is usually bright. The flowers need to be something that doesn't give off a huge amount of scent because we have office regulations against that, too. Please do not tell me to get bamboo, spider plant, philodendron, etc. I would like a flowering plant.
2 AnswersGarden & Landscape1 decade agoProFlowers arrived in a box?
Has this ever happened to anyone? I ordered flowers to be delivered to my mother at her place of work on her birthday. She called when she received them and told me that they'd come in a cardboard box. She opened it and it included assembly instructions ... she had to put together her own birthday bouquet! I was really embarrassed. This is the last time I will go with Pro Flowers. Has anyone else had similar problems?
Other - Home & Garden1 decade agoHow reliable is the Dallas Dart system?
When I move to Dallas, I've estimated that I'll be using $60 of gas in a month just to get back and forth to work (assuming $2 gas). Through my employer, I can get one month of DART service for $25. What I would like to know is, are the busses and trains in the DART system reliably on time, every time? The reason I ask this is because a lot of the change-overs on my route will happen with only 3 or 4 minutes of time between arrival and departure.

I need some help with this calculation:
A steel conducting rod .25 cm in diameter has an equivalent resistance between 50 and 150 micro-ohms depending on the length used. If 28 VDC is applied across the rod (with a max current of 50 Amps), calculate how hot the rod will get.
1 AnswerEngineering1 decade agoMy kitten is sick all the time?
It's gotten to the level of ridiculous now. When I adopted him at 12 weeks he'd already had an upper respiratory infection. In the 8 weeks that I've had the poor guy he's had:
►Two more respiratory infections (treated with Clavamox)
►Two separate ear infections (treated with Tresaderm)
►Two eye problems (one a scratched eye, the other as yet undiagnosed)
►Three instances of vomiting (one I think was from eating too fast, the others I'm not sure)
►Scratched the fur off the back of both ears (antibiotic ointment)
►And this morning he started sneezing AGAIN!
This is my first and only cat, and I am 23. I've done lots of research. I have purchased pet insurance to help with the cost, but no one covers chronic problems like this. I'm giving him lysine in case he's got feline herpes. I feed him a high quality wet food. He's active, playful and growing like a weed. What am I missing? What am I doing wrong to cause my cat to keep getting sick? I was prepared for reasonable medical expenses, even got pet insurance! But if this keeps up, I'm afraid I may have to give my little guy back to the breeder.
You don't need to tell me to take him to the vet. I've been 5 times in 8 weeks for at least $120 each visit. I can't afford to go again for a while if I'm going to make rent. Is this something common in kittens? Will he grow out of this phase?
7 AnswersCats1 decade agoCaught between two halves of my family, advice?
My parents divorced when I was young and it wasn't until about 3 years ago that I was able to interact semi-normally with my father. Since then, I've discovered he and I have a lot in common and have come to something of an uneasy peace. He has been good enough to pay child support this whole time, and even when his salary increased dramatically, my mother never took him back to court to get her child support raised. This is despite the fact that she was supporting three kids and in a bankruptcy. Recently my youngest sibling turned 18 and, even though my dad agreed to pay child support for three more years (in writing), he is refusing to pay and is taking my mother to court. He doesn't have a leg to stand on legally, so why is he doing this? Hasn't he hurt us enough?
This is upsetting me so much that I almost got into an accident yesterday. I no longer live with my mother, but I am still caught between them. I feel awful that my other siblings will have to be there to see this ugliness happen. Has anyone else been through a similar situation that has some advice besides "Don't get involved?"

Help! For a few weeks now my kitten has had something on his ear that I thought was a scab. It hasn't gone away or come off, in fact it won't come off at all. I recently figured out that he got into something I'd Krazy glued that hadn't completely dried yet. It's on his ear where the hair is really short, so I can't cut it off. How important is the number of pre-programmed stitches?
What price range should I look at? I've seen machines from $70 up to $400+ ...
8 AnswersHobbies & Crafts1 decade agoKitten gaining weight too fast?
I have a 4 month old Siberian kitten. I know he will be at least 10 - 15 pounds when he gets his full growth, however this could take up to 4 or 5 years (I have heard this breed gets it growth slowly). When I adopted the kitten at 12 weeks he weighed about 2 pounds. I weighed him again 3 weeks later and he weighed about 3.5 pounds. This comes to about 1.2 ounces a day, which is well over 3% of his original body weight gained EVERY DAY.
He's an active and happy kitty, and I've since started to feed him less. He now gets half a can of food twice a day and about a 1/4 cup of kibble left out during the day. Should I be feeding him less/more? What is healthy weight gain for a kitten that will be so large?
5 AnswersCats1 decade agoMy cat is meowing strangely?
I know my 13 week old, male kitten's meow, since he comes and meows at me at mealtimes. He also meowed like crazy when I took him to the vet last monday (he doesn't like riding in the car).In the last two days, his meow has changed. It sort of breaks up, like "Me-o-o-o-w" . It almost sounds like his voice is breaking like a teenager's or he has laryngitis. He's otherwise a very quiet cat, but he's at home alone during the day so I don't know if he meows then ...
He also does this strange thing when he jumps down from something. He makes a noise like he's exhaling hard when he impacts. I can't tell if he wheezes or not, but I don't think he does. He's finishing up his second week of antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection (he was sneezing) that had not spread to his lungs. What's going on with my cat? This is my first cat, so I don't have any point of reference.

He is a color point (CP) male kitten with pale blue eyes. I believe the official term is a Siberian Lynx Point (from the CFA website about breed standards). He has an off-white body with pale tan and grey striping on his legs, tail and face and a medium gray on his ears.

Since the breed is called Siberian I wanted to try a Russian sounding name. He's a really laid back kitten that likes to cuddle and explore (and disappear under furniture). I was thinking maybe "Ghost" or "Spirit" in Russian, but I don't know how to say those. Any suggestions?

1 AnswerChevrolet1 decade agoHelp fixing a Bell Airstrike 950 "Premium Frame Pump"?
I've recently purchased the above product at wal-mart. It is a hand pump for inflating bike tires and sports equipment that can attach to the frame of the bike. I unscrewed the cap to try swapping the inner parts around (as suggested on the back of the box). However, there are two very small parts just inside the mechanism that fell out when I pulled off the inner seal. One of them is a round, flat bit of plastic, the other is a flat plastic ring with four pegs on one side. I don't know how to re-seat them so that the pump works properly. Any advise? I know it's a cheap product, but I'd prefer not to have to go buy another one ...
1 AnswerCycling1 decade agoHow can I calculate my total tax liability for 2008?
Using the tax brackets I found on the wiki:
10%: from $0 to $8,025
15%: from $8,026 to $32,550
25%: from $32,551 to $78,850
I'm filing single for this year and I expect an income of roughly $59,000. From what I understand, this makes my taxable income (gross less standard deduction of $8,950) to be about $50,000. So if I use those brackets, I should owe
10% on $8,025 = $802.5 +
15% on $24,525 = $3,678.75 +
25% on $17,260 = $4,315
-----------------------------------------
$8796.25 total in taxes for this year.
Are these calculations correct? I had originally claimed zero dependents and so more than necessary was taken out of my paycheck ($5,230 so far). Does this mean that for the rest of the year I will only need to pay $3566.25 in taxes? Should I adjust my number of dependents so that only this amount is taken from my remaining paychecks?
6 AnswersUnited States1 decade agoLyrics to Ashley Maher's "Seven"?
I wanted to know if anyone could decipher the lyrics for the chorus to the song at the link below
http://www.ashleymaher.com/mp3/seven.mp3
Deny what's wild
And run the risk of perishing in her flames
She'll rise, she'll defy you
Despite your moves to sully her bad name
She's yours alone
She's crucial to the truth you seek
You cannot prove until you know
Just what she is needing down, down deep beneath
[Chorus I can't understand]
I seek the place
Where devils and angels sing together
One love but many a face
Subject to the same holy weather
Trade in your wings
For one night on the town wherever
She may reveal just what you feel
For feelings cannot stay undercover
[Chorus]
etc. Any help please?
1 AnswerLyrics1 decade agoGrowing Key Limes?
Is it possible to grow a key lime tree/bush from the actual lime itself? How much watering do they require? I live in the north Texas area, and we're pretty much past the frost, but I can keep the plant inside and it will still get plenty of sun (all my windows face south). Should I remove the seed from the fruit, plant the fruit whole, or split the fruit open and then plant it?
