I read a book in a southern gothic lit class, and CANNOT remember the title. Here's some details, I sure hope someone recognizes this!

It's a story about a valley that's about to be flooded by a dam, and centers around a woman who cheated on her husband in order to concieve a child. Her husband kills the violent man, and hides his body high in a tree by looping barbed wire all around the guy. Their child is exceptional, and eventually finds out about the murder and the book ends with the man and wife drowning as the valley is flooded. It's told in three parts, from the point of view of the sherrif, the woman, and then the man. There is also an herb woman or "witch" in the story, if that helps.

I appreciate anything that may further jog my memory this is driving me nuts!

They were big on human nature and potential of the individual, but did they acknowledge the potential in the common man? I'm not nearly well read enough in either of these guys to differentiate. Any thoughts?

I have four old photographs of my grandmother, 3 black and white and 1 color from the 1950's and 60's. They were mounted in a damn unfortunate collage that had not only glue but flowers all over them. I have removed the pictures from the scrapbook paper page, but a significant amount of glue and flower still remains. I realize that my best bet is to get them scanned post haste, but is there anyway to retard further deterioration? I have some experience in document preservation, but none in photographs.

Any ideas?

My friend just passed away, and I'm looking for a few exceptional history books to buy for our local library in her memory. She was a fan of Arthurian Legend, Courtly Love, and kings and queens of the middle ages. I have a few ideas, but I was wondering what others would think.

I work at a library, and a good friend/patron just passed away. She was especially fond of british history; courtly love and kings and queens. Long story short, my operating system (windows xp) was completely fried yesterday by about 10 separate viruses. We ran a system recovery utility to wipe the entire thing clean, but something weird has stayed: the resolution/ color of all web pages and programs is nearly florescent, I mean everything that would be grey is lime green! We have been all through the color/gradient controls, and everything is set to normal. The screen res. is the same as well.

Does anyone have the slightest clue as to what this could be?

I am completely open to this being my fault....I'm just trying to avoid having to pay more $

Okay, it's set in world war two London. An american WAC named Elizabeth? arrives there having just survived a major ship wreck. She's assigned a desk job with two women and one man- and things are normal until the women get murdered (one drowned in the royal natatorium and one killed with a hat pin) and Elizabeth starts fishing around with the help of an American officer. Long story short, it turns out the other man she worked with was a major spy, and a british traitor in the royal family who had been badly burned in battle was after him. The traitor tries to fly him to Germany and ELizabeth ends up foiling the whole thing and ending up in the sea again!

Any clue?
