Limiting Reactant, Chemistry?
The first completely synthetic organic polymer was "bakelite" named for its inventor Leo Baekeland, a Belgian chemistry professor. Bakelite is a hard plastic used as an insulator for power plugs, distributor caps in automobiles, switches and circuit breakers, and the black handles on pots and pans. It is created by the reaction of Phenol (MM= 64.1) and formaldehyde (MM= 30).
C6h5oh + 3 Ch2o ----------> "Bakelite"
If 24.0 grams of phenol are combined with 18 grams of formaldehyde, how many grams of the reagent in excess will remain unreacted when the limiting reagent has been completely used up?
The answer is 5.2g of C6h50h Phenol. I could not get this answer. Show all step thanks :)

1 AnswerChemistry7 years agoMolecular formula of unknown organic compound pound.?
An unknown organic compound is known to contain only the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. When 6.60 g of this organic were burned in an excess of oxygen gas, 9.90 g of carbon dioxide and 2.70 g of water vapor were produced. In a second experiment the molecular weight of this unknown compound was estimated to be 180 +/- 20. What is the molecular formula of this organic compound?
The 180 +/- 20 is the uncertainty.
