3 AnswersHigher Education (University +)7 years agoIs the temperature dependence of conductance in a semiconductor a purely quantum mechanical effect?
Someone asked me to perform a simple experiment in quantum mechanics and I'm planning to simply grab a piece of silicon, measure the resistance, heat it up with a lighter, and observe how the resistance decreases. According to me, the only way to fully explain this simple experiment is by assuming that the electrons in silicon behave like waves, not particles, though the theoretical demonstration is not straightforward.
I was wondering whether there is another way to explain this temperature dependence without invoking quantum mechanics.
1 AnswerPhysics7 years agoWhat is the federal tax rate on earned interests on savings accounts vs. dividends from securities?
It looks to me that, at least for my case, Federal tax rate on interests almost double the dividends.
3 AnswersUnited States8 years agoEarliest records of principle of "no taxation without citizen consent" in Britain and France?
On of the main issues of the Stamp Act was that american colonists were to be taxed without their consent and, at that time (1765), the British Constitution guaranteed that citizens were not to be taxed without their consent.
I would like to know the earliest records of the principle of "no taxation without citizen consent" in Britain (it had to be before 1765) and France (?) only. Please provide dates and name of key players.
1 AnswerHistory8 years agoHow much per year does it cost to be in Scientology?
Let's say, I want to be an entry-level member, how much does it cost per year?
I am not interested in opinions about scientology. If you don't know the amount, do not answer the question. Your answer must have a dollar figure in it otherwise it will be rated low.
11 AnswersReligion & Spirituality8 years agoHow do I treat a simple free-particle wavefunction normalization in quantum mechanics?
Here is a question that has always baffled me in quantum mechanics, it is simple stuff. The eigenfunction for a particle in a given energy state in free-space is A exp(-ikx) + B exp(ikx), the normalization is integral (-infinity,infinity) |A|^2 + |B|^2 + 2A*Bcos(2kx) has to be equal to 1. Well, it is not, it is infinity as |A|^2 and |B|^2 are constants (2A*Bcos(2kx)=0). How is this then treated or conceptualized?

1 AnswerPainting9 years agoWhat is the theological foundation of religious freedom?
This is the context: It has been repeatedly claimed that the U.S. was founded on judeo-christian values and freedom of and from religion is a value we all hold dear in this country.
Thus, please provide specific bible quotes or specific references to other theological materials (i.e. works by Thomas Aquinas, Papal encyclicals, etc.) that support freedom of religion. Please, answer ONLY if you can produce such references.
I'm not interested in personal opinions, so please, NO PERSONAL OPINIONS. Only printed references. Thanks.
2 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoCan The Golden Rule be considered to be an objective moral value?
This is, as a proposition, can it be said to stand independent of human opinion. If you don't know what The Golden Rule is, please don't answer.
This question really belongs to Philosophy, not religion. I could not find a Philosophy forum in yahoo answers.
10 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoNeed links to Billy Meier's UFO Metal Samples Analysis Data?
In the 1985 video "The Beamship", IBM chemist Marcel Vogel presents two EDS X-Ray spectra of the metal samples given to him by Billy Meier (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oum-rC-6GE&feature... This material is, allegedly, from extraterrestrial origin and was analysed by Vogel in 1979.
I need links to the actual EDS X-Ray data presented by Marcel Vogel (other than The Beamship) where this data is properly displayed so that I can analyze it.
Please only direct me to the links to his data. I'm NOT interested in personal opinions about Marcel Vogel or Billy Meier. I'm also NOT interested in any evidence of this case other than Vogel's EDS spectra from the samples.
If you don't know who Marcel Vogel is and what I mean by his EDS X-Ray spectrum data, please DO NOT ANSWER this question.
Again, I'm NOT interested in personal opinions about Billy Meier or Marcel Vogel, just direct me to Vogel's data.

5 AnswersReligion & Spirituality10 years agoIs it legal to max out my tax allowances to the point that I zero the tax withholding in my paycheck?
Is it legal for me as an employee to max out my tax allowance and just pay my taxes in lump sum when they are due (i.e. on April 15th)? Please no comments about how it is "better" to have the tax withholding, or how I will gamble/spend away the money, etc, all I want to know whether my proposition is legal or not.
7 AnswersUnited States10 years agoCan you make a flamethrower out of an oxygen tank only (no fuel)?
In the movie AVP, there is a scene when the actor Lance Henriksen,in an unsuccessful attempt to stop one of the predators, uses the mouthpiece of his breathing oxygen tank as a flamethrower. Don't you still need some sort of carbon-based fuel to create the flame? I mean, oxygen is obviously the oxidizer.

4 AnswersLaw & Ethics10 years agoWhat is the linux command to obtain the PID number of a specific program running?
I'm tired to use the "top" and search around for the PID of a program that I know is running on a remote terminal, left open by someone else, and that I want to kill. I wonder if there is a linux command that would return the PID of only that program.
