  • How can I persuade my younger brother to read?

Hello. I'm a boy and I'm seventeen. I'm from Pakistan and English is my second language. I read books very frequently, but my younger brother, who is nine, has no interest in reading.

Now, in Pakistan, most prestigious schools use English as the medium of education. I myself started reading at the age of seven. Reading has improved my English a lot, due to which I find it child's play to study. Moreover, it's also really exciting to read all those remarkable plots in English books, such as books by Dan Brown, The Hunger Games and lots more. I know I can't force my brother to read, but there are many benefits of reading, and I'd like to at least try to expose him to the world of fiction.

We Asians are very ambitious, and he already says he wants to study engineering at a prestigious American university on growing up. He's quite fluent in speaking English, but to truly succeed, he needs to read too. How can I convince him that reading is a fun, joyful activity? Thank you!

  • Why do people hate America?

I am sixteen, and live in Pakistan. When my cousins came from there, America was all they talked about. When I watched a tv show, they would love to say that America was the place where it was made. When I ate at McDonald's, they said McDonald's is an American chain. One of them even said, "They're the most powerful nation in the world; the least you can do is pay respect to their flag." Another time one of them said, "They're bosses." They just LOVED to remind me about how America was the best in the world! After a while, I just got sick of their pride, although I didn't show it. And then, when they went back, they told their father that *I* was arrogant! Now, I wholeheartedly admit that America is very good, but is it fair for some (NOT all) Americans to rub it in others' faces all the time? So, I like America as a country, and I'm sure there are many good people there. But I hate its government and the people who constantly remind others they're the best. I mean, it's not the PEOPLE'S fault that their country isn't the best! So I hate the arrogance of Americans. What are the other reasons you, or the people in general, hate America?

P.S. No, America, we're not jealous of you.

  • Is it dangerous to upgrade iOS and Android?

Hi. I have an iPad Air, a samsung smartphone and a laptop with samsung kies. My iPad is running iOS 7.0.6, but my phone is on ice-cream sandwich. I want to upgrade my phone to Android kitkat using samsung kies, but i got to know two years ago that if the internet disconnects during upgrade or power goes out, your phone will be permanently damaged beyond repair. I live in Pakistan, so power outages and internet connection problems are extremely common here (I know I can use my Laptop battery if the power goes out). So is it safe to upgrade? Also, if there's a danger of upgrading my phone, is it also dangerous to upgrade my iPad? And if I DO need an upgrade sooner or later for my phone or iPad, what steps should I take before and during the upgrade? Thanks, ten points for best answer.

In electroplating, the electrolyte needs to be a solution of a dissolved salt of the metal coating an object. Why is this necessary? What would happen if this rule were ignored? Please give an example. Best answer gets 10 points.

  • Is it a crime for me to be happy without any friends?

I am a 16 year old boy, in the last year of high school. My problem is that I am taunted for being introvert, both by my class-fellows and my mother. In the past few years, no one taunted me. But lately, my classmates have started making me the centre of attention every time they think of going to a get-together. For example, when planning a farewell trip, they got to know I did not want to go. Immediately, some boys started making personal attacks. They said that on the day of Judgement I will be punished for not enjoying in this life. (I am a Muslim). One of them even said what answer will I give to God when questioned about this. Their attitude wasn't like joking, they were entirely mocking. To my utmost astonishment, one boy even started abusing me via his speech for not being social! I've repeatedly tried to convince them that I'm not social but they just do not listen. But that is not the thing that actually made me furious. The actual thing was that two boys who I previously thought of as friends even humiliated me in front of a teacher! Fortunately, not a lot were listening and so I was saved from embarrassment. The reason I do not go out a lot is that my parents themselves have never tried fast food restaurants other than McDonald's, and that they aren't social as well. Also, I admit I am a bit socially rejected because unlike the other boys, I study a lot voluntarily, and. do not feel comfortable with bunking (which they do). However I should also mention that despite this, my choice of introversion is entirely voluntary. I should also mention that despite all this, I face no social interaction problems. I often give moral speeches during assemblies, have excellent grades, always secure the highest marks in class presentations due to my confidence, and have a very healthy relationship with all my teachers. Although my classmates reject me because I feel uncomfortable to bunk classes or cheat, when I ask them for help they always help me because countless times I have helped them. My mother also continuously points out that I'm a "deviant". Do you think I should care about what others say, even if I'm perfectly happy with my life?

    (b) Why was it necessary to

    (i) lift the lids of the crucible during the heating?

    (ii) prevent smoke escaping?

One group plotted a graph, drawing a best fit line because all the points did not fall exactly on the line.
