  • What happened to my boot sequence on my OS HDD?

I have just installed windows 7 on a brand new hard drive. I left the old hard drive in the system during the installation to copy over my desktop items once Win 7 had finished. However the new hard drive won't boot unless the old hard drive is present also. When I remove the old hard drive from the system, the screen goes to a blinking cursor after the POST and nothing happens.

    System relevant bits:

    Athlon Phenom 1090T

    Asus M5A99X mobo

New HDD is WD blue 1TB

Old HDD (orginal Windows install) is a Samsung 1TB

Thanks for any and all help. This is the first time I have experienced this problem and it has me bollocked...

  • Discuss the merit of this statement.?

When 'finite' becomes 'infinite', all possibilities become eventualities.

(Speaking namely in terms of time.)

  • Are there any free programs I can use to convert an .mkv file into an .avi?

I wish to import an episode of a TV show into After Effects so I can take a clip out to make a ringtone. The episode is in .mkv format and I am looking for a simple program to convert its format to .avi (or any others that will be usable by After Effects).

  • What is the easiest way to expand a small picture to a large plotter-friendly format?

I have a number of pictures I'd like to prepare for vinyl cutting in Signblazer. Until now I've managed by just using a b/w bitmap, but now I need to blow up a logo from a CD cover (JPEG) to a 700x700mm car bonnet sticker. Naturally, expanding the image just makes it look like it was forced through a fly screen. I would like to blow it up to have nice smooth curves and lines.

Thanks for reading, any help much appreciated.

  • What are some of your impressions of martial arts?

All answers welcome in all formats. Positive or negative, any martial arts. If you have an opinion, I want to hear it. What sort of impression do you get from martial arts that you learn/see/hear about? I have been training myself for many years and it has sort of put me in a bubble. I have my own outlook on it but I'd like to know how it fits in to the modern lifestyle for others (in your sphere of experience, to whatever extent that may be).

  • I have completely rounded a nut on my car's engine. What can I do now?

I am removing the gearbox from our Suzuki Baleno 1.8L.

The axles are out, the engine mounts are off and I have clear access to THE LAST bolt holding the gearbox on. I tried the ring spanner early on in the day and rounded the nut slightly, and over the next 2 hours I manged to make the nut an almost perfect circle (hooray!). The ring spanner now has no effect and the locking pliers/vice grips slide right around it even if I bloody near break my hands clamping them on.

Short of cutting the nut off with a grinder or hacksaw I don't know what else I can try. I am no expert so I'm hoping that there is a tool especially for this type of situation that I don't know about. Any advice from an experienced mechanic or person with know how would be greatly appreciated. I told my partner that I could do this and I have bruised my pride already...

    Thanks a bunch!

  • What uses less power. (Physics sort of question)?

    What uses less power?:

Reheating a cup of coffee in an 800w microwave for 90 seconds or boiling 500ml of water in the kettle to make another cup. (Kettle wattage unknown, please go by general standard).

I have wondered this for long time. Thanks.

  • Does running a higher wattage CPU cost a 'significant' amount more than a lower wattage CPU?

I am building a downloads system to leave on 24/7.

I am using older components, all pre-dual core stuff. I have a choice between a 472 socket 2.4Ghz, or LGA775 socket 3.0 Ghz. Would the 472 chip use a substantial amount less power? I ask because if it is not going to cost much more on my power bill I'll go for the faster chip.

I should mention also that the 775 board uses DDR2, the 472 board just DDR.

Thanks very much for your help.

  • What is a really insulting racial insult for white folk?

I don't really find 'honkey' to be offensive (or I don't understand it).

What's something that gets white people seething?

    I'm just curious.

I'm interested in learning how to use Linux. I like Windows but it is rather more expensive than I care to pay, and Macs just **** me. Which version of Linux is best for a noob. (That is to say which one will be the most stable and have a strong driver library).

    Thanks for your help.

  • Why do spiders still irk me?

I love spiders! I think they are fascinating and beautiful. I love looking at them up close in their web or crawling along a wall, but as soon as they move I feel tense and jittery. I'm sort of afraid of them but I'm happy to catch them in a jar to release outside. It might be they way they move...

Is this effect innate in all humans or is it a behaviour that I was taught as I grew up?

I wish I could handle them confidently, they're awesome little creatures. : )

  • I may need to leave the mother of my children. How will it affect them?

My children are 4 yrs and 18 months old. I've been with their mother for nearly five years and in that time she has become so much lazier and she does not look after the kids properly. I have sat her down and had a talk with her numerous times and nothing changes. The stress has started to affect my health and my ability to focus at work. The probable outcome would be that they all move to her mother's house if I leave her. My boy's kindy is all set up here and he does so well with the carers there. My fuse is getting so short with everything around me and I find myself getting angry at the kids unnecessarily. It's not their fault that I get home to a top-to-bottom disaster every day.

Has anyone else had to leave from a similar situation? I feel very limited in my options, I don't want my kids to grow up away from me. I don't know what other ultimatum I can give her to make her pull her finger out.

    Thanks to all.

  • Question on physical bodies examining Zeno's paradox.?

As a young lad I thought that 2 bodies could never touch each other. Walking home from school I considered that although contact occurred at some point between my foot and the pavement, there was a period before my footfall where the distance between my foot and the pavement was constantly growing smaller. The distance between my foot and the pavement could always be halved or reduced in someway etc.

At what point are 2 bodies considered to be in contact with each other and how does this come to be?, given that 2 physical bodies can always be closer to one another before touching.

It's like *poof* suddenly they are in contact. This has troubled me for many years. It doesn't ruin my day or anything, but I yearn to understand it more deeply so that I have an acceptance of my dimensions, rather than my mind just abstractly accepting it despite my lack of conceptual understanding.

    Thank you for your help.

  • Is it possible to change the flavour of something you consume purely by your thoughts?

I smoke a tobacco pipe from time to time, but years ago it got quite out of hand, so I cut down and stopped by repeating to myself that I didn't like it and it was bad for me, as I was smoking. Whether or not that was the catalyst, I put the pipe down a few weeks after and forgot about it.

I loved smoking flavoured tobacco like fruit and nougat latakia blends, however since I stopped by using this self-message; whenever I treat myself to a pipe it just tastes like ash. I've consulted experts on smoking forums about technique and I'm still doing everything right, but I can't enjoy one single puff anymore... Have I mentally rejected it so strongly that my brain will not let me enjoy it anymore? Maybe it fears another spell of dependence on the stuff.

    Thanks to all.

  • Why are there so many questions about which culture is jealous of which?

We all eat, sleep and ****. We get jobs, we struggle with our social problems and we care for our young... Why is it so attractive to some people to hate other cultures instead of working towards a sustainable social order?

Maintaining differences in culture is important, because one stadardised gobal society would be bland and become toxic after many generations, but how is it that so many people cling to the idea that one group is superior to another? It's really immature and and with everyone fighting to survive against each other we are stagnating instead of exploring the reaches of human endeavour.
