How should I proceed in my career path?
Hey,
Details and what I know so far:
So I've just recently graduated high school. I am not planning going to college this year, because I want to see the world and learn traits and skills that I can take with me for the rest of my life. It's always been a dream of mine to work on a ship and go new places, so I tried to join the navy. I have gotten PDQed officially from the navy because of mild eczema when I was 13. I am currently very interested in the Merchant Marines, but I have heard entry level deck hand jobs are hard to come by, basically because people in other countries will do the same work for less pay and the fact that the Merchant Marines are disappearing.
So here are the questions:
Will I not be able to join the Merchant Marines Because of eczema?
What are the chances that I will spend $1,000 on certifications and end up sitting in a union center waiting for a job to come along?
I live in Charlotte, NC. Should I go into the Coast Guard recruiter's office and ask what to do, or should I send a message to the ISU?
Is this basically a life time commitment to whichever company I sign a contract with?
Are there any other jobs like this? I like the Merchant Marines because of the fact that they visit different ports and are auxiliary to the navy, so I feel like I'm doing my part.
Any other comments, stories, and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time, and sorry about any grammatical mistake that may have annoyed you.
2 AnswersBoats & Boating7 years agoQuestions on the NG and ROTC?
Hello everyone,
Here's my plan: I have just graduated from high school and am in the process of signing up for ROTC (non scholarship). I am also going to college and majoring in Accounting while getting a minor in criminal justice.
Question 1:
Do accountants have time to be in the National Guard?
Extra details:
I am not joining the military for financial reasons It has been a dream of mine to join the military and serve our country, but with the current downsizing, budget cuts, and (from what I heard, don't quote me on it) the National Guard hurting for officers, I figured my chances of going Active after college are little to none. I am completely fine with joining the NG, but I do not know how much it will affect a career in accounting, especially during tax season. Does anyone have any experiences that they would like to share about how the NG affects their work life, good or bad?
Question 2: What does the contract for ROTC entail, besides a service commitment and the cadet's branch, that might be detrimental to the cadet?
Extra details:
I have read up on ROTC, but the only thing that I cannot find much information about is the contract that they offer you before LDAC. For example: do they give even non scholarship cadets stipends?
Thank you for your time and help. All of your answers will greatly help me in making my decisions of what will be the best path for me to take. I apologize for any grammatical error that might have annoyed you.
1 AnswerMilitary7 years agoWhy doesn't the TSA re-fold your clothing?
Hey,
So I had a big interview in the morning, and needed my clothing to be somewhat presentable. I spent a whopping 10 minutes folding all the clothes, so that way they wouldn't wrinkle. Well, when I got to the airport, the TSA checked my baggage for things such as tanks, rocket launchers, anti ship missiles, and so on. When I got to my destination and I opened up my suitcase, it turns out the TSA agent just shoved everything back into my suitcase and all of my clothing was smooshed together and wrinkled beyond the point of no return.
Why can't the TSA just move clothing around while keeping them folded? Do they really have to destroy people's suitcases? I'm pretty sure my interviewer was laughing under his breath when I came in with a horribly wrinkled shirt, and i'm pretty sure the TSA just made me loose a job.
Sincerely,
A pissed off citizen
5 AnswersLaw Enforcement & Police7 years agoToshiba L755 display acting weird?
Hey,
So this started happening to me maybe 2-3 minutes ago. When I grabbed my laptop to take it upstairs, I was holding it by the screen. Now when I use it, it sometimes seems like its taking a photocopy of a certain part of the screen and placing it over another part of the screen. I have to adjust it to see the whole screen. What do you think the problem could be? The laptop is about 3 years old.
Laptops & Notebooks7 years agoMilitary doctor question?
Hey,
I've been curious about this question for awhile. Are candidates for HPSP and USUHS excused from minor medical DQ's such as Eczema, gout, or any other disease that could easily be controlled? Does the military still keep their standards the same for everyone, with no special acceptations? Just curious, since it seems (I don't know if it's true, I just read it somewhere) the military needs more doctors than are supplied.
5 AnswersMilitary7 years agoQuestions about AFROTC and tips?
Hello,
I am currently a senior in high school and I'm considering applying for AFROTC. How how does the AFOQT (Air Force Officer Qualifying Test) compare to the ASVAB?
I scored an 83 on the ASVAB because I scored very poorly on electrical systems and Auto/shop since I was never taught any of those subjects. Will this be a detriment on the AFOQT that I lack in these categories? I can easy fix that if it will be a problem.
Also, do you have any tips that really helped you get the slot that you wanted? If it matters, the jobs I am the most interested in are space and missile operations officer, ABM, CSO, and Command and Control Officer.
Finally, any experiences that you would like to share, no matter what your job in the Air Force, would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time, and I apologize for any grammatical mistakes that may have annoyed you.
2 AnswersMilitary7 years agoGums feel weird after wisdom teeth extraction?
Hey,
So I have had 7 wisdom teeth total. Just last week, I had the last 4 taken out (they were in my upper jaw) because they were getting into the roots of my other teeth. The pain has gone down immensely, but while my right side of my gums feel good and solid, my left e feel soft, slimy, and squishy and I've had a taste in my mouth that tastes like something old.
They did not prescribe me antibacterials because they said it wasn't open.
Do you think this is an infection? I've hurt it a couple of times (a day or two after surgery trying to eat, control my dog on the leash ect...) but whenever I feel for the stitches, the are in there. Thanks for your help

1 AnswerLaw & Ethics7 years agoQuestions on ROTC, NROTC, and Med school advice?
Hello,
I just got accepted into UA and it has both ROTC and NROTC. Both programs have interested me for awhile, but when I try to do research on a few topics, I can't find much. My questions are:
For ROTC
1.What happens after you commission?
2. Are you likely get the job you want, or are you constantly competing for the best spot?
3. Will they allow me to go to medical school and becoming a M.D? I don't care about incurring a higher obligation time, because that means that I have more time to serve my country.
4. I've heard that the military is starting to kick people out because of budget cuts. Is this likely to have an effect on officers too?
5. I know that there is no average day in the Army, but does anyone know anything about the branch 37? Does anyone have person experience/information that they would like to share?
For NROTC
1.What happens after you commission?
2. Are you likely get the job you want, or are you constantly competing for the best spot?
3. Will they allow me to go to medical school and becoming an M.D? I don't care about incurring a higher obligation time, because that means that I have more time to serve my country.
4. I've heard that the military is starting to kick people out because of budget cuts. Is this likely to have an effect on officers too?
5. Also, I was researching jobs, and I found that a job I would be interested in would be a Surface Warfare Officer. Does anyone have any information/personal experience that they would like to share?
The Army and the Navy websites both aren't exact on what happens afterwards. Thank you for your time and I apologize for any mistakes in my writing that may have annoyed you.

1 AnswerMen's Health7 years agoquestions about pre-med/biology in community college?
Hey,
So I'm a senior in high school and have gotten accepted into a few colleges (LSU, Alabama, University SC ect...) but I'm going to go to community college instead to save money. My high school GPA wasn't great (3.2) but that's because I only studied a hour a week, if at all. I plan on busting my butt and take the usual pre-reqs that someone would take in a 4 year university. I plan on get my AA and transfer over the a university, I also plan on Taking an EMT course and volunteering/interning at many different places.
How will community college effect me?
Will it be a detriment to my application for med school?
My plan for financing college is either take out alot of student loans or (fingers crossed) a HSPS scholarship from the military. Will community college affect my application for that too?
Do you think community college will help me be prepared for the MCAT?
Anyone have some experience going this path?
On a side note:
I noticed how prices for med school are rising and the average salary for a doctor is declining with the new health system. Does anyone have any experience on how easy it is to pay off your debts once out of medical school? (I will not drop out on my own free will. I know I can do it, but the debt that most people accrue honestly scares me and my wallet)
1 AnswerHigher Education (University +)7 years agoQuestion about national guard deployment and national emergencies?
Hey,
So I am planning on enlisting in the National Guard. Got my ASVAB scores (83 afqt) and qualify for 68w, which I will hopefully enlist in. My questions are:
1. If my unit gets chosen for deployment, is it pretty much just Afghanistan/Kuwait, or do they deploy you to other areas such as Germany, Korea ect....
2. What is it like to be mobilized during a national emergency such as a hurricane? What is usually the first things that happen? What do you do? Do employers understand even if it happens on a short notice?
Thanks! Couldn't find the answers anywhere else that I looked.
3 AnswersMilitary7 years agowhat type of rash is this?
hey,
I am currently trying to join the military, and i'm trying to see if i have eczema or not. I know if its a DQ if I do, and the nearest dermatoligist is 6 hours away, so i was hoping if I could get just a suggestive second opinion on what to expect.
so the rash:
spotty. looks like zits. only comes up during allergy season, and most years isnt serious enough to where id have to go to the doctor and get a perscription. I do not have asthma nor anything else that usually comes with eczema and would be fully qualified if it wasnt for this mystery rash.
I only get it when the weather changes and then it recedes and, if i want the bumps to go away
(last major outbreak was 5 years ago, now it doesnt itch when it pops up. usually only pops up under my stomach, but for some reason last year i had it on my chest and back, although it was in very small patchs, didnt itch, and went away easily after cortizone 10 creme is applied). do you think this could be a heat rash because of my football pads? i play sports and it doesnt immidiately pop up when i wear pads. it just chooses random times.
so what do you think it is? if ti turns out that it is eczema, do you think that I would be elidgible for a waiver, or do you think i'd be PDQed. thank you for your time and opinions. i aplogize for my grammatical errors and hope my paragraphs werent too painful to read.
