  • How do you pronounce the word "this"?

    Simple question.

The dictionary says the pronunciation of the "th" should be like breathe or these. However, in oral English, I keep hearing people say pronounce it like "dis".

Is there true difference between the colloquial and formal pronunciation or am I just half deaf?

  • Why aren't OLED tv/monitors for sale yet?

Ya, I know, Sony's got that worthless little 11 inch for 2.5k.

I've been excited about getting OLED monitors and tvs since 2009! I'm really tired of my LED displays...their contrast levels just aren't good enough. I want flexible displays, large transparent displays, and super light wearable displays, NOW! I think I might have to pull a Cartman and freeze myself until OLEDs come out.

  • Do I have the flu, and how bad is it?

I've been bed-bound for all this weekend, and when I stand up for more than a couple of minutes, I start seeing stars and become nauseated. I also have this piercing headache (which I hardly ever have when not sick). My other symptoms resemble that of the common cold, just with a higher magnitude.

Do you think my condition needs medical attention? I don't really have any way of getting to the hospital; I would probably collapse trying to get to my car. Taking acetaminophen helps somewhat, but is only slight temporary relief. Is there anything you guys can suggest to speed up my recovery?

  • My depth perception is messed up, and everything seems to wave in and out...?

My right eye has been very nearsighted for a while, so my brain adjusted, and automatically turns off my right eye when staring into distance (doctor said). However, I occasionally get stricken with this nauseating feeling of losing depth and size perception, like right now! My hands look like ants when I'm typing this, and they seem to be like 10 meters away from me.

My left eye has perfect vision. This happens to me randomly sometimes when I'm laying in bed looking at the ceiling, but more often it happens to me when I'm looking at a monitor. NO I will not wear glasses or contacts. Any other suggestions on these weird symptoms are appreciated.

  • High pitched whine from Laptop?

I know it's NOT the fan. I have a solid state HD, so it's not that either.

My processor is the quad core i7-720. Only at low frequencies, ~ 928 Mhz, it emits this annoying piercing noise. When at turbo boost (2.8 Ghz), or even on moderate loads, it's silent, and I hear the normal soft buzzing sound of a working processor.

Any suggestions? Could be something with the power management? I had this damn problem with my old Dell laptop too. My current laptop is the Lenovo y560, specs: i7-720, 8 gb RAM, Ati 5730, 256 gb Crucial SSD.

  • Does my laptop have a SATA 6 gb/s controller?

I'm getting a SSD for my laptop and don't know how to check the SATA controller on my mobo.

The SSD will utilize SATA 6 gb/s, but is backwards compatible with 3 gb/s.

How can I tell if my laptop has the SATA 6 gb/s controller? I looked through device manager with no avail and also downloaded cpuID and couldn't see anything.

My laptop model is a Lenovo y560, the 2010 version.

  • My monitor is flickering?

I see flickering on my monitor. No, adjusting the refresh rate or resolution does not help.

The monitor is attached to my laptop via a VGA cable. However, when I attach the monitor to my laptop via HDMI, the flickering goes away. Do you think that the flickering is because of the bad VGA cable? Or maybe because the VGA port on my laptop is not working correctly? What's the most likely reason?

I don't want to use the HDMI cable since it cannot display 1920 * 1080 res on my monitor.

  • How to use the pedal with Clair De Lune?

Hi, I'm an intermediate piano player trying to learn one of Debussy's great pieces.

I started learning Clair De Lune, but when I use the sustain pedal, it sounds too sloppy and jumbled up! Am I supposed to use the sostenuto pedal in the middle? I know that some pianos don't even have the middle pedal. So the question, how I play Clair De Lune very smoothly (I've heard youtube recordings) while not slurring over everything? Any pedal help would be much appreciated!

I'm usually not bad with the sustain pedal. For example, I played arabesque 1 without too much trouble (other than the whole eighth notes + triplets thing). I was totally fine with the sustain pedal usage on this piece...

  • Difference between laptop and desktop SSDs?

I'm trying to buy a SSD for my new laptop. When I got browsing for SSDs, they don't say if they are for desktops or laptops? Also, from what I've been seeing on the reviews for SSDs on Newegg, some people installed it on their desktops and some on their laptops and it seems to work fine. How do I know which SSD to buy and can anyone recommend a specific model/manufacture to buy from? I'm looking for around 128 GB - 256 GB and want the biggest bang for the buck. Thanks!

  • Why hasn't the blu-ray replace DVDs?

Blu-ray has been out for years now, and can hold many times more data than the DVD. So why is DVD still the standard? Is it only because of the price?

  • Best impressionistic composers/pieces?

One of my favorite composers is Debussy, especially with his pieces Arabesque 1 and Claire De Lune. I was wondering if there were other pieces close to the taste and expertise of the above mentioned. I'm mostly trying to find another composer around the romantic -> modernistic era who has composed some deeply moving pieces.

  • Are D.O.'s looked down upon by M.D.'s?

As we all know, MD's are more prevalent these days. However, more and more students are pursuing the DO path, and I was wondering if I should also consider this. I realize that it is easier to get into a DO program than a MD program, but I was wondering how a DO license could affect your future in the medical field.

  • what's the next pc game I should play?

I'm getting bored of all my games...anyone got any recommendations? Games I've played and liked: Fallout 3, Dead Space, Both Crysis, Dragon Age Origins, DiRT 2, Both Mass Effect. Basically I've played most of the popular ones. Are there like underrated and underhyped games that I'm missing. I prefer games past the year 2005. Can't stand the graphics of older games...bleh. Of course, starcraft and warcraft III are exceptions.

Please no MMORPG...I got sick of those a while ago.

  • What's with the letter 'C' and computers?

Just out of curiosity, why are do many things that has to do with computers use the letter C? The most common drive is the C: drive, most used language is C++/C, CPU, etc. Is there is anything historical about the letter C with its relevance to computers? I don't think just because the word 'computer' starts with 'C'...

  • How do you say, "This begs the question: ..." in German?

I found something like: " das zu Beweisende als feststehend betrachten", but I have no idea how this translates to the English counterpart. Can someone tell me an easier way to say this, or perhaps explain what the above fragment means?

  • How do you say "he was like, 'hey dude!'", etc, in German?

I'm just interested in the "was/is like" expression in English. In common English, people tell stories to friends and everybody uses the phrase "was like" to substitute the word "said". Is there a common expression/word in German for "sagen"?

  • Clipboard app for windows 7 x64?

I'm looking for a clipboard application that can store multiple items in your clipboard (for example, if you kept pressing control + c, you won't overwrite your previously copied data).

I know Clipx is a good program for windows XP and earlier, but is there a good program for windows 7 x64?

  • Why do macs have such bad graphics cards?

I've looked at previous mac book and other models, and they always have CRAPPY graphics cards! The stupidest thing is that they actually advertise it and are almost PROUD of it! For example the newest macbook boasts about having the Nvidia 320M. That really is absolutely nothing to be proud of...my 2 year old dell laptop has a better graphics card than that. So why? why? why doesn't macs actually put decent graphics card in their systems? Don't say macs suck, because I already know that. If they put a decent graphics card, I (including many other people) may actually consider* their product for once.

  • what's the difference between i7 920 processors and i7 930, 950, etc.?

It seems to me that they only differ by the core speed? If I overclocked a 920 to like 3.5 GHz, wouldn't that be faster than a 960 (which cost like almost twice as much)?
