Hi! I'm an Aerospace engineering major. I love the planet Earth and am all for keeping it habitable for a long, long time. My goal in life is to design spacecraft and a wish of mine would be to leave earth and go to another moon or planet. I love imaginative novels, science fiction, and some romance. I am an atheist, but I feel very spiritual as it pertains to nature and the cosmos. ~Joshua D

  • Do I get to keep the leftover money if I have a grant and a scholarship?

I am going to a Community College and I've received a scholarship (Engineering Scholars Program). This scholarship will cover the cost of my college this year. I also have a need-based grant through FAFSA. Do I get to keep the money left over (scholarship + grant money - tuition cost)?

  • Go to school for Aerospace Engineering or join Navy as a Nuke?

As a transfer student, I have been accepted into the University of Maryland to study Aerospace Engineering. Very difficult field of study, with probably every possiblity of not succeeding despite my effort. My parents have split and I am on my own with very little money.

Meanwhile, I have for a long while considered the option of joining the Navy as a nuke. The asvab was really easy (I got a 99) and I am cleared to enlist if I so choose. Along with the possiblity of graduating as a Navy Nuke, the Navy would pay for any schooling that I decided to do after I got out

I know it all depends on my personal interests, I get it. And I also know that no one here knows me personally, but which option seems more ripe with opportunities to you all?

  • Who is tired of the Johos waking you up on Saturday and giving you a pamphlet?

I know they don't mean any harm, but man they really missed the 21st century-mobile and got a one way pass to the Dark Ages. The stuff that I read in that 26 page pamphlet was so intellectually unbearable, it made me depressed.

  • Help with joining the Navy or Air Force (see below)?

I had a misdemeaner and am now off of probation. I was able to take the ASVAB with the Marines and got a 99. And I passed all the physical evaulations. I want to really join the Navy, but they require you to wait 60 days and Air Force requires 90 days since probation. Can any processing be done with either of these two branches and will my ASVAB score carry over or will I have to take it again?

I'm homeless, so I want to serve as soon as possible.

  • Would I fail the security requirements for the Air Force?

I had a misdemeanor for shoplifting, but I completed my community service and I am no longer on probation.

I just took the ASVAB with the Marines and got a 99. I also passed all the physical evaluations. As far as I know, I'm free to enlist in anything I want (Intel is my preferred MOS).

I'm still thinking about the Air Force though. Does anyone know if I would be denied a job like intel because of that one misdemeanor?

  • Which branch of the military has the most advanced technology?

If you feel like there is no clear-cut answer or you have a problem with how the question is worded, I still wouldn't mind hearing some sort of response.

  • Navy, Air Force, or Marines?

I know that ultimately the decision rests with me, but I'd still like some advice. I'm 22 and looking to enlist quicky because of my financial status. I am an engineering student with an associates degree and going for my bachelors. I am going to join the Reserves of whichever branch I choose so that I can hopefully still get my degree before too long. I want to join a branch with the highest of standards and the highest of respect for each other. I know that ultimately I can choose an MOS that gives me good technical skills no matter which branch I choose. I got a 99 on my ASVAB so getting the job I want shouldn't be too much of a hastle. Any comments or advice?

  • Christians: Isn't your "God didn't want to create robots" argument lame (see below)?

If eternal life is achieved not by works as the Bible says, but a free gift, why not eternal life from the start? If you say because God didn't create robots, then what is heaven? Can you sin in heaven? Can you choose to rebel in heaven? Can there be any type of wickedness in heaven? If the answer is no, then how is eternal life not robotic?

  • Christians: If we were to find extraterestrial life of similar human intelligence, would you hand them bibles?

If we could somehow communicate with ET life (maybe not in a conventional way), would you try to proselytize them or would your view of the universe and our place in it change a bit?

Try to guard against the first thing that pops into your head and answer honestly.

  • According to Christianity, the majority of mankind will burn in hell for eternity. How come it seems like....?

....most Christians don't lose much sleep over this? Am I wrong about this?

And I'm not talking about the copy and pasters on yahoo. Thats not what I mean when I say losing sleep.

  • Why do Christians throw the OT under the bus when questions get touchy?

for instance...god commanding the killing of infants by the sword...I Samuel 15:3,8

...and the multitude of other disgusting passages in the OT

Last time I checked, the god you worship is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

  • I don't want to worship a god that commands infants to be killed "by the sword." Why do I need another reason?

There are many reasons for not believing or wanting to worship the judeo-christian god, but isn't this far and away a good enough reason?

Oh, and this is the verse I'm referencing in which god commanded the israelites to do the following:

"Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy everything that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and INFANTS"...'by the sword' [verse 8]

    I Samuel 15:3,8

Those infants must have been big-time sinners!....or the omnipotent judeo-christian god somehow had a shitty day and couldn't think of a way to let them live and still make a way so that they could come to him....o well

    better luck next time, god

  • Does the bible have any good words to say about reason and intelligence?

I find it very suspect to hear so many verses about having faith "as a little child" and without faith it is impossible to please god.

Oh, and which disciple other than Judas does the bible give a bad reputation? Thomas. "Doubting" Thomas.

And what was his crime? Wanting evidence. All the man wanted was evidence!

It seems as though the bible is reversed engineered to anticipate and counter the natural thoughts and doubts that anyone with reason should have.

  • 'If we long to believe that the stars rise and set for us, that we are the reason there is a Universe...?

...does science do us a disservice in deflating our conceits?'

What do you think about his quote from the great Carl Sagan? Anyone can answer.

    5 AnswersReligion & Spirituality10 years ago
  • Is science eating the lunch of religion (see below)?

I'm quite familiar with the history of science and the infamous history of the church getting in the way of actual scientific discoveries.

Poor Copernicus had wait till the day of his death to publish his book which validated the heliocentric view of the universe.

Galileo was convicted of heresy and was sentenced to house arrest for agreeing with this model.

Bruno's observations about stellar distances were so belittling to the religious authorities (who wanted to believe that we are the most important thing in the universe) that they burnt him at the stake!!!

Now, many religions are on the march again denying an ancient universe, denying our incestral heritage as explained brilliantly by evolution, and continue to propogate their pre-enlightenment rubbish with no facts at all.

And now one of my favorite quotes from the great Carl Sagan:

'If we long to believe that the stars rise and set for us, that we are the reason there is a Universe, does science do us a disservice in deflating our conceits?"

What do you guys think? Anyone can answer and give their opinions. This isn't meant to be offensive; only thought-provoking.
