  • Safe to use an old batch of 10w30 (API SL) oil in a newer engine that requires 5w20 (API SN)?

I have an old case of 10w30 (API SL) motor oil in my garage which I used in a 1994 Dodge, but the 2010 Dodge Caravan I currently own specifies 5w20 (API SN) oil. Would it be safe to use in this vehicle, just as a "top-off" oil between oil changes? I wouldn't use it as a complete substitute for the correct oil, but I figure if it's diluted it should be OK? I'd hate to let a perfectly good batch of motor oil go to waste.

  • 2002 Mercedes CLK320 fuel light keeps flashing?

I have a 2002 Mercedez-Benz CLK320, and the Check Engine light is on and the warning light by the fuel gauge (which normally only lights when you're low on gas) keeps flashing. When I remove and re-tighten the gas cap, the flashing light goes away for a few days, then comes back on again. According to the information I can find online, this usually indicates a loose or a bad gas cap, so I tried replacing it with a new one. I also made sure I bought an OEM gas cap manufactured by Blau, the same company that made the original part (not some cheap no-name brand), but the gas warning light still keeps coming back and the Check Engine light won't go away. Any ideas what else the problem might be? Thanks in advance.

  • Engine fan at full speed when A/C is turned on?

I have a 2002 Mercedes CLK-320. I noticed earlier this year that the air conditioner hasn't been cooling well, so I bought an A/C pressure gauge which indicated (at the low pressure side) that the refrigerant pressure was too low, so I added more until it came up to 31 PSI (with the engine fully warmed up and the A/C set to full cooling). But since I did that, the electric cooling fan for the engine is almost constantly roaring at full speed whenever I turn the A/C on. I don't seem to remember it doing this when I first got the car. Is this normal behavior?

  • Easiest way to get rid of an old moped?

I have a big old 3-wheeled moped that's been sitting under my porch for years. The motor's shot (cracked piston and broken rings) and the tires are rotted out, though the rest of it is in decent shape with only light rust.

Here's a picture of the same type of moped (though in better condition):

I don't think it's really worth advertising and trying to sell it, and I'd be happy if somebody took it away for free to maybe fix up or use as parts. Thanks for any ideas.

  • If a non-handicapped driver parks in a handicapped spot?

he can get fined. So why is it legal for a handicapped person to park in a non-handicapped spot? If certain spaces are segregated for people with special needs, then other spaces should be reserved for other people, no?

  • Why are my water supply pipes making noise?

I own a house, and I noticed a few months ago that there is a loud hissing noise in my water pipes. It sounds like an open faucet running water, but I know for a fact that there are no open faucets or leaks anywhere in the house. I shut off the main water valve in the basement (which is in good condition since I had it replaced by a plumber less than a year ago), and the water meter isn't moving, yet it still sounds like water is running somewhere. What could be causing it?

  • What exactly does "10-4 good buddy" mean?

Don't bother googling it or going to Wikipedia. This question has perplexed me for over 25 years, and those sources don't help. I'm looking for an answer from any CB or ham radio operators from the 1970's era who remember what actually happened. I used to watch the Dukes of Hazzard on TV back when I was 6 years old, and everybody on the show using the CB called each other "good buddy". But when I got a CB of my own in the early 80's (while the Dukes were still on the air), anybody who dared used the term was called a fag. What happened that made "good buddy" a bad thing to say on the CB?

  • What wireless router can handle 12+ office users?

I have an office with 8 users (5 are wired in, 3 are using laptops with wireless), and may add some more people in the near future. I've been using a Linksys E1000 wireless router, which worked fine for about 3 months and then the wireless part of it started crapping out and often doesn't allow people to connect. Rebooting the router helps sometimes, but it looks like I need a new one. I was told that the Linksys E1000 might not be able to support that many users at once, but all the retail electronics stores I visited told me it was the best one they can recommend. Could it be that maybe this particular router was simply defective, or can anybody recommend a more robust wireless router that can reliably support my number of users?

  • What procedures are in place to keep airline pilots from flying drunk?

With all the public concern focused on motorists driving drunk, I get the feeling that airline pilots are relatively free of such scrutiny and can punish people for suspecting them of being drunk behind the wheel:

  • Engine often doesn't crank when I turn the key?

I own a 1994 Dodge Stealth (Mitsubishi 3.0L V6 automatic), and for several months I've had a problem where I turn the key and I hear the starter click, but it doesn't turn the engine over. I've already replaced the starter motor and the battery (both brand new), with no improvement. I've had the battery on a charger overnight, so I'm certain it's fully charged. I usually have to turn the key 6 or 7 times before it manages to crank the motor. Battery terminals are clean and tight. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Thanks.

  • What's the difference between an "employee" and an "associate"?

I've noticed in recent years that many stores have posted signs which refer to their retail workers as "associates" rather than "employees". Is there an actual difference between the two positions (i.e. does an associate have better pay or benefits, is harder to fire, etc.), or is it just some new euphemism for the same good old fashioned wage slave?

  • Why are bicyclists required to use roads instead of the sidewalk?

Fatalities seem far less likely to occur between bicyclists and pedestrians, than between bicyclists and motorists. So wouldn't it make more sense if the laws restricted bicycles to the sidewalk, instead of treating them like motorized road vehicles?

  • What is the purpose of gold fringe on a flag in a courtroom?

I've come across some websites which claim that the gold fringe on a flag in a public courtroom indicates that you are being judged under martial law or some kind of military jurisdiction. Personally I think it sounds far fetched, but I wonder where this tradition came from? Did it originate in the military and become used in civilian courtrooms just because the gold fringe happens to look pretty, or does it have any kind of symbolism? Why don't courtrooms simply use a plain American flag without any sort of alterations or embellishments?

  • What is the proper response to the question "when are you going to get married?"?

I get annoyed at how when I go to social gatherings, my relatives as well as total strangers have the temerity to butt into my personal life by asking me incredibly annoying questions such as "so when are you going to get married?" or "why aren't you married yet?"

I would like to respond by looking them in the eye, smearing some greasy food on their nice clothes, and telling them "I will, just as soon as you learn how to mind your own damn business", but somehow I think there are better options.

  • Is there any connection between the Bellamy salute and the Nazi salute?

They do look eerily similar. For those not familiar with the Bellamy salute, that was the civilian salute recommended while reciting the Pledge of Allegiance by the guy who originally wrote it (Francis Bellamy, a Christian Socialist minister, 1886-1972).

  • Is this a good strategy for dealing with shoplifters?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G8_BbERk8o

Maybe the Dutch have something there. Lavish tons of love and *positive* attention on any thieves (instead of detaining, arresting, or fining them), and they'll either feel guilty enough to stop or be too embarrassed to return. Could it work as a general loss prevention policy?

  • Tossing your keys on the roof when pulled over?

A friend of mine who's a trucker recommends that if you get pulled over by a cop, it's considered a gesture of courtesy to open your window and put your keys on the roof since it shows you have no plans on trying to escape. To me, it just looks like you know you've done something bad and are expecting to get arrested. What do cops actually think about this gesture, is it a good or a bad idea?
