Why do my USB ports stop working on my desktop computer?
I recently upgraded my desktop computer. I used the CPU, video card and PSU from my old computer but got a new case, motherboard and RAM. I've never experienced this problem before, but after my computer has been running for a while the USB ports will stop responding when something is plugged in.
My computer:
Motherboard: Asus M5A97 LE R2.0
CPU: AMD Phenom 2 X4 945 (3.0GHz)
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 8GB (2x4GB)
Video Card: EVGA Nvidia GTX260
OS: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
I'm accustomed to leaving my computer on 24hrs a day unless I'm out of town, so when it's been on for a while is when the USB problem happens. The thing is that it happens with the onboard USB ports, the front pannel port and even the USB3.0 PCI-E2.0 card I have installed.
I have updated the BIOS and the drivers and my OS is completely up to date. I would just figure I have a bad Mobo but the USB card doesn't work either... so I'm thinking it has something to do with the OS... but what?
2 AnswersDesktops7 years agoDid I fry my ECU/ECM?
I have a 1997 Isuzu Trooper with a 3.2V6 and automatic trans.
I was having some strange intermittent electrical problems and I found some forum posts talking about loose connections to the ECU. So I pulled the lower dash off and found the ECU.
Here comes the dumb part... With the key on and battery connected I unplugged the three wire harnesses from the ECU and re-plugged them, hoping to confirm good connection.
NOW when I try to start the car it just turns over and won't fire, where before it would at least start and drive.
DID I FRY MY ECU? If so, is there any cure other than buying a new one?
Subsequently; I do have a 1999 Trooper for parts, but the ECU isn't the same number because it's for the 3.5V6. I hooked it up (with the key off and battery disconnected) and it won't fire either.
Did I fry something besides teh ECU?
2 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs7 years agoCan I run two speakers from two channels on one wire?
I have a customer whose house has a single speaker wire run up to the second floor master bedroom. The line is run down to the living room where the surround sound receiver is to be installed. Since there was only a single line run up to the second floor, and the customer wants two speakers in the room, is it possible to run two channels into a single wire, then split it back to two speakers on the other end? I know this would likely cause the stereo signal to become mono, but is there any other negative side effects to doing this?

4 AnswersNew York City9 years agoTraveling to Philly and NYC, how about this weather?
We're arriving in Philadelphia on Thursday morning (11-01-12). Weather.com says only 30% chance of rain on Thursday and clear until Tuesday (11-06-12). We're heading to NYC from Philly on Saturday.
My question is; what can we expect to see in this area as far as storm damage? Will public transit be up and running by Thursday in Philly? Will there be other problems with post-storm situations?
5 AnswersPhiladelphia9 years agoWhat kind of food from Manhattan would be good to take with me on a bus trip?
I'm visiting Manhattan for 3 days, and afterward I've got a 14hr bus ride back to Tennessee ahead of me. So I need to pick up something in Manhattan to eat on the road. It needs to be able to be eaten cold/room temp, and it needs to be able to travel easily.
So what "to-go" type food item can I get from a food truck, or other eatery that would suit my needs?
5 AnswersNew York City9 years agoIs this a good server setup?
I have a customer with a small real estate office who is wanting a data server in their office. No applications will be run on the server.
I'm planning on offering them a Dell PowerEdge 840 (pretty much this one: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=PWREDGE-84... with three hard drives.
1x 250GB for the server's OS and other programs.
1x 500GB for data they are currently utilizing (which will be sync'd with iDrive Sync so they can access it online, and have a backup)
2x 1TB in RAID1 for archived data they are not utilizing currently.
My thought is to give them the ability to access "current" information from anywhere with the iDrive Sync service, and store old data about old listings on the 1TB drives where it will be automatically backed up via the RAID1 configuration.
My questions are:
1) Is this a decent setup?
2) Does this motherboard have a raid controller to handle the RAID1 configuration, or will I need to add a controller card?
3) I'm planning on running Windows Server 2003. Should I use XP Pro instead, stick with Server 2003, or run something different?
Other - Computers9 years agoI need a good backpack for a trip to NYC.?
I'm making a trip to Philadelphia and NYC, total time round trip is 7 days. I need a backpack for my wife to carry for all her clothes and personals.
We will be taking a bus to Philadelphia and staying two nights, then going to NYC by bus for 3 nights. We will likely leave her bag in the room while we're out site seeing, but it does need to be large enough for her stuff, and comfortable enough for her to wear between the bus and the room (on subway's and etc).
I think something larger than 45L is too much, but I honestly haven't bought too many bags.
I would like it to be somewhat stylish, not military looking, but also under $100 including shipping.
Any suggestions?
1 AnswerPacking & Preparation9 years agoHow do I wire up this 66 block?
I am familiar with punching down data panels, but not phone. I have a customer who has two phone lines coming from a VOIP modem (freshly installed by Charter), which have been punched down on the left side of a 66 Block. On the right side I have a bunch of lines punched down the entire right side (left by previous tenant) which terminate into a large serial type plug.
The customer is running 6 or so lines from the front of the storefront back to the data/phone area (lines are orange/white blue/white) which I need to punch down so that half the new lines connect to one of the VOIP lines, and the other half go to the second VOIP line. How do I configure the wiring?

1 AnswerLand Phones9 years agoWhat to do in Philly?
I'm going to be visiting Philadelphia for the first time in November. I'll be there for 4 days, and other than seeing a Flyers game, I'm wondering what I should check out. I'd rather not look like the typical tourist, but I want to have a great time and see what there is to be seen.
I'm already planning on going to Atlantic City for a bit of gaming.
3 AnswersPhiladelphia10 years agoIs my motherboard bad?
I have a Toshiba Laptop that is about 2-3 years old. I tested it with PC-Doctor 6 to find out what problems it might have. The results showed bad Hard drive, and the RAM test froze every time. I bought new (geeks.com refurbished actually) HDD and RAM, as well as ordered the factory recovery discs from Toshiba.
After installing the new hardware, and running the recovery discs the computer seems fine, but I decided to run the diagnostic software again anyway. It still results in a bad HDD and the RAM test goes all crazy with a white screen and glitchy graphics (unlike before where it just froze up).
Hooking the HDD up to a second computer tests good. This leads me to believe that the motherboard on the laptop is bad. The computer seems to act much better than it did before the parts swap, however I'm afraid if I sell it to someone it will just become a warranty nightmare.
Any suggestions or answers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
2 AnswersLaptops & Notebooks10 years agoAre there any TV brackets which mount to a mantle or floor, rather than the wall itself?
I have a customer who wants to mount a flat panel TV above his fireplace. However, the fireplace and the wall above the fireplace is made of stones of varying sizes and depths. This is of course making drilling holes in the stone or mortar a big No No. His mantel is not deep enough to accommodate a very large TV, as the base would be too large to sit on the mantel without hanging off the front.
I cannot seem to find any such thing, but I'd like to see what options we may have for a mount that would bolt down to the mantle. While I'm unsure about such an endeavor, it may be this gentlemen's only option.
1 AnswerTVs1 decade agoIs there an application or website that will allow me to show my service area?
I need to have a center point on a map of my area, with concentric rings going out, each one a different color. The rings would represent the area which I can cover in my business, and how much additional trip fee I need to charge to go further away.
Does anyone know of such an application? A Google maps API would be great.
1 AnswerSoftware1 decade agoWhat happened to this company?
I was convinced to invest a bit of money in a penny stock 1-2 years ago. The company was a holding company, which one aspect was a mining company who supposedly found a bunch of gold in a previously abandoned mine.
The company was called Tristar Holdings (TSHL.PK). I purchased like 300K shares. The stock bounced around for a bit, but never really went anywhere. Then the company did a reverse split, and my ~300K shares are now numbering at about 7000 shares. When this happened they also changed their name to Macada Holdings (MCDA.PK).
Macada's focus seems to be on a line of beauty products.
My question is, what happened to the gold? Did the company abandon the mining? Did the mining company split off?

4 AnswersVideo & Online Games1 decade agoWhat's the best way to arrange RAM sticks in your computer?
It seems like a while back I remember reading somewhere that if you had a number of sticks of RAM, and one was a smaller amount than the others, it was best to put it in the first slot.
In other words: 3 sticks of RAM: 1x 512MB 2x 1GB, use the 512 Stick in the first slot?
What are your thoughts?

Is there a way to accomplish this?
2 AnswersDesktops1 decade agoHow can I figure out what the maximum CPU my motherboard will hold is?
I have a Gateway that I bought for a whopping $12 (got a steal). It's a GT5694. Gateway's site says it has a Foxconn RS780 motherboard. I want to upgrade the CPU to the maximum the motherboard will use, but I'm not sure what that is. Crucial.com is a great site for figuring out which RAM your computer needs, but is there an equally great resource for CPU's?
