  • Were the Western European countries pretty similar during the Middle Ages?

Before you write me a snarky response, yes I'm doing my own homework. (: I just have a question about something.

For my Portuguese history class I have to write an essay about whether or not Portugal was different from other countries in Western Europe during the Middle Ages. I'm going to be comparing Portugal and France and the role religion and education played in both countries. I've done a lot of research and have found that they were both pretty similar (both Catholic, universities taught lessons in Latin, etc). Am I right or are there any important details I'm looking over?

    Thank you for your time.

  • Is my job "rude?" And how can I make it more pleasant?

I'm 20 and in my second year of college and I work as a "telefunder," which means I call parents of current students and alumni of the university and ask them for donations for the student programs on campus. I'm not a telemarketer or trying to rip people off, I just ask people to give back to the university. I do come across some nice people who donate but the majority of people I call don't answer the phone, hang up on me, or don't want to contribute. I had work today and being Easter Sunday I was kind of expecting to get yelled at a little more than usual anyway. Not many people answered but the ones who did got really upset, said I shouldn't be calling people on Easter Sunday, and asked to be taken off the list, so I apologized and did what they asked. Was that a good way to handle it? I'm studying abroad next year so I plan on quitting in June anyway, but I'm starting to hate this job. I would quit now but I need to make money. I realize that even if the work I do is rude there's nothing I can do about it, but is there a better way to deal with angry people?

Also, is it rude to call people after 8 PM? The evening shifts end at 9 so when I work those shifts I have to call people until then and sometimes people yell at me for calling that late too.

    Thanks for your answers!

  • Someone wants me to pay her back for stuff I didn't ask for and I don't know what to do?

This question is about Greek life so I'll try my best to make it clear

I'm in a sorority and last month we had something called "big/little week" in which the new members are assigned to a big sister and the bigs go crazy buying tons of gifts for their littles. I'm a college student on a budget and I bought as much as I could for my little, but MY "big" (although we aren't that close) thought I didn't buy enough stuff, so she and her roommate (another one of my sisters) went out and bought $60 worth of junk for MY little (my big's roommate paid for it). I thought they just did it to be nice until I was told how much I owe. I didn't ask them to buy anything but they still want me to pay for the stuff.

My big texted me last night telling me her roommate was wondering when I would pay her back. As you can see I've been avoiding the situation for a long time but I'm going to have to face it eventually, so my question is what should I do? Should I just pay the $60 (which I don't have right now but I will for Christmas)? My friends think I shouldn't because I didn't ask them to buy anything, but at the same time I feel like I'm obligated to because I let them give the gifts they bought to my little. I know I shouldn't have if I didn't want to pay for it but they bought A LOT of things and would have been pissed if I asked them to return everything to the store.

  • How do I get to know professors for letters of recommendation?

I'm in my second year of university and I really want to study abroad in England for the 2014-2015 year. The application requires two letters of recommendation and I have two people in mind who I want to ask. One is my history professor and the other is a TA I had while taking a summer English class.

The thing is I don't know how to ask for letters of rec. I took a class with my history professor in the spring and I'm taking another one with her right now but she doesn't know me. How can she get to know me? By me going to her office hours? Also when should I actually ask for the letter? The application is due on January 22, 2014.

Also, the TA I had for my English class knows my name, the class was small, and I went to her office hours frequently so she knows me pretty well, but I haven't seen her since August. Would it be weird to just email her and ask for a letter of rec?

    Thanks for any help!

  • Why do I have to fill out a separation form (termination paper) after being fired?

I know this is probably the wrong section but I want more answers. I worked at one of the dining halls at my college since September 2012 and I got fired yesterday because I didn't come to work for the last few days. Before you call me a bad person it's because I'm in a sorority and we had polish week last week and recruitment this week and I would be fined a lot of money for missing any days, and management at my job wouldn't excuse it.

Anyway, my manager emailed me yesterday saying that I will no longer be working for them and that I have to come in and fill out a separation form. My question is why do I have to do that? If they're firing me then I never want to go back there again. They're already firing me so what more can they do to me if I don't fill out a separation form?

Please don't make fun of me; I've been looking everywhere for this and I really need to find it. I'm in a sorority and I can't find my membership badge anywhere. I'm not sure if it's in my parents house or back at college somewhere. Can someone on here help me, or know of anyone who can?

    Thank you.
