  • Can someone please shed some light on my thyroid test results?

    Hi there,

I have been having almost all of the symptoms of hypothyroidism on the standard lists, increasing in intensity over the past six months, and my mother has it.

The first blood test was for TSH and a blood workup a couple weeks ago. It showed:

TSH = 5.48 (normal: 0.5-5.5 <--I hear that is an outdated range)

Iron deficiency anemia: I mention this because I hear it can be linked with hypothyroidism

Based on that, my doc sent me for new blood tests today. Results:

    Free T4 = 18 pmol/L (normal: 11-22)

    Anti-Thyroid Peroxidase = 26 kU/L (normal: <35)

Can anyone shed some light on what might be going on here or offer any theories? Is my thyroid plain ol' normal? Should I be pressing for any specific tests as follow-up, or ask any specific questions of my doctor? I have a follow-up appointment in a couple weeks.

    Thanks for any responses!

  • Can anyone tell me what it's like to be a spa practitioner?

Backstory: I've been kicking *** and taking names in my career, but the long hours (70+ hour weeks) and high stress are starting to get to me. I miss spending time with family and friends, I'm always sick and I never see my husband. Now that we're starting to talk about having kids, I'm realizing that my current career path just isn't going to mesh with motherhood. It's been a hard choice because I do love my current career, but I'm craving something more relaxed, something where I can make my own hours.

After doing a bunch of looking around, being a spa practitioner (specifically relaxation massage, reflexology, aromatherapy) sounds like it may be what I'm looking for. Being in a soothing, relaxing environment all day sounds fantastic, as does the chance to be a positive influence in people's lives. I also have a strong desire to run my own business, which seems like it could be a good possibility once I get some experience under my belt. There's a great college here where I could train, and a wealth of career opportunities.

That being said, every job has its downsides & stresses. So, I'd like to ask here to get a first-hand glimpse into what it's like to be a spa practitioner. What is your focus? What do you like about your job? What do you hate about it? Any advice you could give to someone who's interested in it as a career? Is it a career you could see yourself doing until retirement? If you're a parent, do you find it meshes well with parenthood?

Thanks for your help! I appreciate any insight you can offer.

  • Use of "and" in written numbers - - correct or incorrect?

So, my Grade 5 teacher drilled into us that numbers should never have "and" in them when they're spelled out.

    eg:

    120 = one-hundred-twenty, not one-hundred-AND-twenty

    1032 = one-thousand-thirty-two, not one-thousand-AND-thirty-two

He swore up and down that this was the only correct way to do things. I've been following this advice for 20 years now and only today began to question it. Googling the grammar rules for this, however, has proven to be quite tricky.

Can anyone link to references that show the grammar rules for this? Is the "and" simply optional, or is it an actual grammar mistake?

  • Why do programs keep uninstalling themselves from my computer?

Lately, every time I go to run any program, it prompts me to install it, as if it were not installed in the first place. This is all manner of programs, not just one particular one. I'm getting tired of re-entering CD key numbers for the same programs over and over. Anyone know what could be causing this?

I tried googling this, but I keep getting pages that tell me how to uninstall my files. :\ I use Windows XP.

  • Tamiflu + H1N1 = still contagious?

    Hi Everyone,

I have family members with H1N1. They are sick as of yesterday (Wednesday). I am supposed to attend a birthday party with them on Sunday. They started Tamiflu on Wednesday.

Their doctor told them that because they are on Tamiflu, they are no longer contagious.

This doesn't seem right to me, and research online seems to be conflicting.

Does anyone have any information or studies that show how Tamiflu affects the spread of H1N1? I have autoimmune illnesses and have not yet been able to get the shot, so I'm worried about getting exposed to the virus. At the same time, I don't want to miss a family member's 7th birthday if there's no reason for me to be so worried.

    Thanks for any help!

  • Are helix piercings out of style?

I've been toying with the idea of getting helix piercings, two silver hoops in each side. However, I'm kind of, uh, out of touch, so I need help -- is this style of piercing still current, or will people look at me and think "wow, that lady should go back to the '90s where she belongs"?

I'll do what I want one way or another, but I'm just curious. :)

    Thanks, everyone!

  • Canadian silver quarters (1909-1967) -- how to sell them?

    Hi Everyone,

My fiance's grandmother just gave us a few dozen Canadian silver quarters from 1909 to 1967. None of them seems to be a rare coin (the closest is one of the maple leaf marked 1947 quarters). They are all in pretty worn shape.

She suggested that we should sell them for their silver. How do we go about doing this? Do we take them to a coin collector for appraisal, or is there a better venue? We want to maximize the amount of money we can get for these, and I suspect that the silver is worth more than the coins themselves. Is there anything we should be sure to do?

Thanks for any help or advice you can offer. If it helps, we're located in Vancouver, BC.

  • Speech tag word order in fiction?

"Which word order is correct?" asked arthasnjaina.

"Which word order is correct?" arthasnjaina asked.

I've seen both used, so I assume they're both technically correct, but which is the preferred style for fiction and why? Is there a tone or level of education associated with the word order? I've been trying to Google for tips, but I keep coming up with conflicting information.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

  • HELP old techno saxophone song?

This is a long shot. I've been looking for the name of this song for about 10 years. Digging through Discogs and stuff. Nothing. I have it on cassette tape, which is starting to wear out. At this point, I don't even care about getting the song so much as SOLVING THE MYSTERY!

    Help!

    This song:

-came out before Aug 1997 (I'm guessing 1995/1996)

-was on an album that was black with an alien's face on it -- I think the cover was green & black, and I seem to remember it being the 2nd part of a series

-the CD also had on it: Robert Miles - Children; Robert Miles - Fable; DJ Dado - X-Files.

-was a dreamlike trance song (similar to Robert Miles style) and had no lyrics at all, but was carried by an alto saxophone melody (sounded like something Raphael Ravenscroft might play)

I'll post if I can remember any more details. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, PLEASE let me know!

  • Is 3 weeks long enough to prepare for a 5 km run?

My workplace is doing the CIBC Run for the Cure (breast cancer) 5 km run this year. The problem is that they just announced this yesterday, which leaves a little under a month until the race.

I work out regularly with quite a bit of intensity (both aerobic & anaerobic), so while I have not run regularly, I am fit and have good endurance. I have often done 3 km runs without training specifically for them, but I'm not sure how I'd do when that extends to 5.

Would 3 weeks be enough time for me to train to do a 5 km run? I don't care about my time, or about how sore I am the next week. I'd just want to cross the finish line.

    Any good training programs?

    Thanks!

  • Is 3 months too early to get married?

I ask this because i'm a little shocked and don't know if i'm overreacting. My friend's partner just moved from another country and they met on the internet and fell in love right away and they've only known each other for three months and just moved in together. Now they've just gotten engaged and they are planning to marry SOON. They're both in their mid 20s and doing school.

It's obvious that they are very good together and that this could seriously work but i can't help but freak out and think that it's too soon.

What do you think? Should i talk to them about it or should i just mind my own business and let them do what they think is right? I don't want to try to live their lives for them but the whole idea has me squicked out and i'm worried that they're going to rush into something they'll regret. My husband and i were together for two years before we even started seriously talking marriage so maybe i'm biased??? HELP!

  • Walking down the aisle, don’t want Canon or Here Comes the Bride?

Looking for ideas for songs that will play when I'm walking down the aisle besides Here Comes the Bride or Pachelbel's Canon. Any suggestions? I'd prefer something classical.

  • Does it get hot behind a stove?

This is probably a very, very stupid question, so please bear with me.

I just dropped a flimsy plastic container (knock-off brand of tupperware) behind the stove. Does the back of a stove get warm enough to melt plastic? Is it dangerous to have it back there? I think it's pressed between the back of the stove and the wall. I tried to pull the stove out a bit to loosen the container so that it will fall to the ground, but it doesn't work. :(

    Thanks!

  • Which herbs are in jagermeister?

Anise is one, obviously, but does anyone happen to know any more of the herbs? I know there are 56 of them, but I'm curious what those are.

This is probably a very closely guarded secret, but I thought I'd ask in case anyone has come across anything anywhere!

  • How to cope with a friend's suicide?

My old school buddy was missing for a month and they just found his remains a couple days ago. Now I have found out that he left a suicide note. I'm extremely frustrated and angry and sad all at once, and I don't know how to cope. I feel like all the sadness and worry was based on being afraid that something horrible had happened to him, and now I see that he did this to himself and made all his friends and family worry, and now they will all have to grieve. I feel like I should have made more of an effort to see him, that I should have seen the signs...and this is all ridiculous because I haven't seen him face-to-face in years.

I'm sorry, I know this is rambly. It's just...I'm not very good at dealing with this kind of thing. How can I cope with this? I was planning to mourn this like any other death, but I'm surprised at how angry the suicide thing makes me feel. I feel like I don't want to even remember him at all anymore.

(This is all strange because I, myself, was suicidal many years ago...maybe that's partly why I'm so mad, because I can understand where he was coming from and I'm frustrated that he didn't get the help he needed? I don't know, I'm so confused.)

    Thanks for reading this gibberish.

  • Nausea & diarrhea after antibiotics?

I had a seven-day course of Macrobid to treat a bladder infection, and I had strong nausea while I was on it. I finished the antibiotics on Tuesday; since then I am nauseated and I have diarrhea. Today, my appetite is gone and the nausea is worsening.

Are there any warning signs here that suggest I should see my doctor? I don't have a fever, and I am able to keep fluids down (though they, uh, don't stick around for long.) I'm planning to just wait and see how things progress, but I thought I'd ask here in case someone said, "those are symptoms of _____! Run to your doctor NOW!"

    Thanks, everyone!
