What is the system or method they use to decide how much a player should or should not earn for each year in his contract, and furthermore how long that contract should be or is it an arbitrary decision? It would explain a lot of these bloated contracts (cough Clarkson cough Clowe)

What would be some pro's & con's for making this switch? My father is always ranting that with the extra room there'd be fewer hits and fights and that despite the fact that NHL teams would have to sacrifice the front few rows of seating which would hurt revenue, it would be better for player safety as fewer hits would relate to fewer injuries. Also, by my own thinking, by allowing players to have more space and less fear of getting hit would we see more artistic players along the lines of Fedorov, Forsberg, Datsyuk, etc.start popping up which in turn would make up in finesse for the lack of physicality?
