  • How does water pressure affect volume of water?

Ok I've had this silly thought in my mind for ages but not really sure so thought I'd ask.

Say you obtain say, 100mls of water from extremely deep ocean (say a few kms down), ie lots of pressure, if you could get this water to the surface in a solid container which wouldn't change shape would you end up with lots more than 100mls on the surface due to less pressure? How does it work?

I have too much spare time... :p

  • How to find the term independent of x?

I can do it by working expanding and working it out but I know there is a short way using a formula, which i think is something along the lines of Tk+1 /Tk but I have no idea how it works and I can't find it in my many textbooks.

Say for example, find the term indepentent of x in the expansion of (x² + 1/x ) ^6

Or find the coefficient of x^2 in that expansion and so on.

Any help would be great. Although and explanation rather than just an answer would be much appreciated :)

  • Does anybody know what song this is?

Here is a section of lyrics:

There's something in your eyes, makes me realise,

The stars always shine brighter when you're near.

And if this world should end, I cannot pretend,

    This moment is all I

You're my everything, you're the one I've been waiting for all this time, yeah. You're my everything, you're the one I've been waiting for, all this time. All this time.

It is off American Pie: Beta House. I'd really appreciate it if someone could find what song it is. It's my birthday today too :p

  • Good end statement for mathematical induction?

What do you write? I've seen a few different ones but none really take my fancy.

Something along the lines of 'since Sn is true for n=1, and two consecutive values of k, it is true for all values of n'

    Any help would be great.

  • Finding exact values for inverse/normal trig?

Can't find it in the text book.

How would you solve for example

    tan^-1 (8/6) = alpha

Thanks. Can give more info if needed.

  • Drawing inverse trig functions help?

Ok, I know with ordinary trig functions, lets say y= 2 sin 2x, the 2 out the front changes the range (ie. it becomes between 2 and -2 instead of 1 and -1) and the coefficient of x indicates the number of wavelengths between 0 and 2 pi, but is there rules like this for inverse trig functions?

My book only has examples, no rules, so pretty confusing to figure out, but from what I can gather if y=3 sin^-1 3x the 3 out the front makes the range 3 times bigger (like ordinary trig functions) but I'm not sure what the co-efficient of x, 3, does to the graph..

If someone could explain to me that would be great :)

  • Weight of High E Nylon Guitar String?

Brand doesn't bother me, I know different brands will have different weights but I just want a rough number to work with to calculate tensions.. I need the weight and length of the string. Can't find anything on google. The string I'm using is a Savarez 521 R Mi-E 1 ^ERE but like i said the brand doesn't matter.

Any help would be great thanks :)

  • Average guitar string weight?

To calculate the tension on the string I need the weight of the string in pounds/inch and can't find it anywhere, plus don't have any scales for measuring weights that small.

It's a nylon string made by 'savarez' but I'm more after just an average weight of a nylon string.. Any ideas? If you know the weight of the whole string and also the length of it then that could help too :)

  • Sound waves, resonance, calculating frequency/wavelength and a project to make a harp... maybe..?

For physics in yr 11 we have to create and experiment ourselves based on one of the units we have studied (waves-the world communicates, and movement - moving about).

For waves the instruction is: Use the internet to locate a broad range of information about sound production by musical instruments. Identify one musical instrument of interest that you could investigate first-hand which utilises one or more of the concepts studied in 'the world communicates' module.

Develop a procedure for a first-hand investigation to evaluate the effectiveness of this musical instrument in producing high quality tone.

Then carry it out and record results etc..

Intially I thought piano, as I play piano, but couldn't really think of a good experiment without wrecking the piano..

Then I thought harpsichord, as I could set up a board with strings of different lengths, so I might as well make a harp.

But I'm not sure how to go about doing this, or how the resonance box works. I understand that it resonates the sound waves and focuses them out of the one point but not sure how big to make it or how that effects it?

The aim would be to show how the length of the string affects the frequency/pitch.

I kind of understand it all but get really confused with how it all comes together. Like how would I figure out the frequency/wavelength of a piece of string?

Any help or other ideas would be great :)

    Sorry about the novel.

  • Rotary science speech on topic of your own choice?

Ok I'm in year 11 and am applying for the National Youth Science Forum. One of the requirements is my local rotary club has asked us to present a 2-3 minute speech on a science topic you find intersting for all the town rotary members at their next meeting. That is all the info I have. Uh oh..

What would you write on? One idea I had is to talk about doing convection currents and do the little burning teabag demonstration for them but not really sure they'd like that in their meeting..

    Any thoughts/ideas would be great.

    Cheers Tim

  • In need of some advice..?

I really like this girl but it is pretty complicated. She likes me but also has feeling for one of my mates who has a gf (long story).

Anyway he treats her like **** and never does anything for her but she is still crazy about him even though he does have a gf, they are always fighting and have absolutely nothing in common.

I am always as nice as i can be to her, doing things for her all the time, we never fight and have nearly everything in common (ie she's perfect). She says she likes me lots now but only cos of how nice I am to her and how i make her feel (she isnt actually attracted to me i guess).

We have been talking about dating lots lately and we are both really happy when we are together and really like the idea but then she mentions this guy again and how she doesn't want to date yet as she still has feelings for him and still thinks she has a chance (which she doesnt -he's even said that he would never go out with her- but he lies to her saying how much he likes her and all that bs) but I DO like her, and i don't want to lose my chance with her. So any opinions on what I should do or say to her?

Oh and saying get over her, move on etc doesn't help. I'm looking for advice that will actually end up with us together..

I can't talk to the guy as he will tell her and she will be heaps angry at me.

    Thanks in advance.
