  • "A multitude of rulers..."?

"A multitude of rulers is not a good thing; let there be one ruler, one king."

Is this from Homer's Illiad, or a work of Herodotus? If possible, which work and where in the work (which book/chapter/verse)?

    Thanks!

  • "You're welcome" in German?

I was wondering how to say "you're welcome" in German. Now I mean not so much the phrase "you are welcome" as the reply to "danke". I say this because, from what I have learned from other languages, "you're welcome" is just an expression in English used as a reply to "thank you". I wanted to know what that expression is in German. Thanks in advance!

  • "The Office" season 7 theme song?

In the "The Office" season 7 theme song (the version before Michael left), what episode is the scene with Dwight and Michael on the roof from? In this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z023i8JZSUk it's at 0:24. They appear to be cheering and Dwight might be air-guitaring. I feel like I've seen it before but I can't remember.

    Thanks!

  • To anyone who has drawn the conclusion that God cannot exist...?

To anyone who has drawn the conclusion that God cannot exist because of a logical contradiction:

In pursuing this question (or hypothetical situation, if you never did believe in God), what was your underlying assumption that created the contradiction?

For example: "God cannot exist since evil exists, because God created all things, which must have included evil, and since God is all-good, He could not have created evil. Therefore, since evil does exist, God cannot." The underlying assumption here is that something inherently not good (evil) cannot come from something that is all-good (without evil).

So, please think back to why you drew such a conclusion. What was the undermost assumption that created the contradiction?

(I'm not trying to argue with anyone; I'm just curious.)

  • Anyone know (ancient) Greek?

I need some help with a Greek translation. Can anyone explain the meaning of a lowercase Eta with a horizontal (or slightly slanted) line across the top? (definitely not tonos) The word I'm looking at is: zeta-(that character)-nu

    Also: άποθανείν

Thanks for any help, I'm brand new to Greek.

  • Snyder v. Phelps 2010?

Sorry, I realize that this has nothing to do with R&S, but I posted it in the Law section and got zero hits and I know there are always people in R&S ready to fire away. So...

Thoughts on the Snyder v. Phelps case before the Supreme Court?

Can Snyder prove his claims of malicious emotional distress?

Are Phelps' actions protected as "political speech?"

Does the "fighting words" precedent apply?

  • Raiders vs The World! Question for the World...?

The Raiders are now 5-4 on a 3 win streak and 2nd in the AFC West, only half a game behind the chiefs. We have a bye week coming up and then on the 21st we face the Steelers in Pittsburgh. Since 2002, we haven't had a winning season, but are still 2-0 against the Steelers. So... what's gonna happen on the 21st?

  • Opinions of the movie American History X?

It's my personal favorite, but I won't be offended by anyone who has negative things to say about it. I'm just curious what other people think, since most of my friends and the people I meet have not even heard of it.

  • Question for educated Atheists?

In response to the unsettling spew of unsupported opinions from users claiming to be atheists, I, a Catholic and lover of the sciences, have a question for the educated atheist community.

Could someone please give a logical point or argument (brevity is not important) as to why God cannot exist. I am a fan of formal logic, so clearly defined syllogisms would be very much appreciated. Also, to all the users that will surely respond with the aforementioned spew, please take it somewhere else, I have no need for it here.

  • To all "lovers" of Richard Dawkins/atheist worshippers of science?

Would any sensible person ask a chemist to analyze Shakespeare? I doubt it. Would any logical human being listen to an argument made by a poet regarding quantum physics? Probably not. So why is Richard Dawkins regarded as an expert in disproving religion? Last time I checked, he doesn't have any degrees in theology, or even philosophy. So why is he any more of an authority than a physician trying to disprove Aristotelian logic?

  • Calculus Question for class project?

"Find all the values of the numerical constants a, b, and c so that the tangent lines of the function:

    f(x)=(x^3)+a(x^2)+bx+c

never have negative slopes." I interpreted this as saying that the second derivative of f(x) must always be positive. But because f(x) is a cubic function and concave down when x is negative, the second derivative should always be negative when x is negative since its a linear function. Please help this is for a class project due next week and it has me stumped.
