When I go over a speed bump it makes a scraping sound once on the way up the bump & once on the way down the other side. What could be wrong?

Can you turn your car off while in 4 wheel drive?
I forgot to turn it off and the next AM when I started it, it made a funny noise. After I drove down the road a little, I noticed it was on & turned it off. But then it wouldn't go, so I put it back on and turned it off. It made a little noise and finally went & the 4WD was off. It seems to be OK now. But did/does that damage anything? It's a Jeep Liberty '05, 3.7. Thanx!
