Am I having a problem with the monitor or the video card? How do I find out?

I am not new to computers but I'm new about working with video files. I have successfully ripped several DVD movies into VOB files saved on my computer. I am ready to compress and convert those files to AVI. Do you know of a software that acts like a charm doing all this process in a single step. I have had some problems with other software that save the files with video and audio out of sync. The first one that describes a method that works using only freeware software will get the best answer. Thank you for your help.

I have this 1gb USB memory stick that I formatted in FAT 32 and loaded this AVI movie of about 700MB. When I go to the PS3, navigate to movies, the PS3 recognizes the Memory stick. When I navigate into the memory stick it appears as if there is no file. I press the triangle button, but the PS3 does nothing. What am I doing wrong? I've been struggling for days trying to figure out how to play avi files on the PS3, but how can I play them if the system doesn't see the files?

I understand that I only pay taxes when I withdraw money after I retire, but I'm concern if I have to pay any additional taxes for profits on short term investments.
