  • what causes the sweet smell of urine in MSUD?

Which particular molecule is it? Is it the alpha keto acids, or one of the amino acids? I wouldn't have thought they would smell sweet though.

  • Why has my dog stopped eating bones?

My dog is fed a diet of bones and raw food. She has always been very fussy about veggies, but never had a problem eating bones until now. She's not touching them (occasionally she'll bury them). It's not her teeth, but that was the only thing I could think of. She's eating other things ok. Any ideas would be much appreciated :) (criticism of her diet will not be).

  • Drying up milk (of dog) during weaning?

My dog has started to wean her pups at 3 1/2 weeks and they are all eating food quite readily. She really does not want to feed them any more as they are getting rather aggressive, but she is still producing a lot of milk. I have taken her off all the puppy food and cut back to almost her normal feeding amount (shes still slightly above but only because she was quite thin when I got her).

A few people have suggested that I take her away from the pups for 24-48 hours but that seems crazy to me as she is still making plenty of milk and wouldn't she get mastitis? Not to mention the pain? She would be happy to not feed them at all I think and the pups are now 4 1/2 weeks and I think would do fine without any more milk. Any suggestions?

Also, before i get another lecture about backyard breeding, she is NOT my dog. I am fostering her for the shelter where I volunteer. She came in as a pregnant stray with no tags or microchips and the alternative to me taking her in was for her to have the pups in the shelter with no supervision.

  • What is the best thing to feed a dog right after she has had puppies?

My dog has just had her puppies at midnight last night (6 healthy pups, yay!) but I'm not sure exactly what she needs to be eating at this point. I have given her some chicken and some of her normal dog food, she has had lots of water and a bit of dry puppy food, but she really doesn't like it much. Any suggestions?

  • Why does my horse drag his hind legs?

I have a 5yo gelding that drags his hind legs when he walks, the right more than the left. The vet says that there's nothing wrong with him and my physio says that the muscles that lift the hind legs are fine as well and that he's just lazy. He can lift them up when he gets excited or does a really good, energetic trot though so I am inclined to believe the lazy theory.

BUT, he does have trouble picking up the left canter lead a lot of the time, (which he needs the right hind to push off on, which is his worse side) so sometimes I think there might be more to it, like maybe an old injury or something.

Does anyone else have any ideas though? Is there anything I can do to help him to pick them up? I was thinking cavalettis/trot poles would help.

  • Where to buy Shapley's MTG in Australia?

My horse (an appy) had almost no mane or tail when I bought him. I discovered he had a fungal infection in there which has almost cleared up now, but I want to show him early next year and need something to help it grow faster. I want to try Shapley's MTG but I live in Australia (Vic) and can't find anywhere that sells it! Do any Aussies know where I can get it, or something else I could use that works?

  • Side effects of cortizone tablets and alternative treatments?

I've just put my dog on cortizone for his allergies on my vets advice, but i don't like the side effects they seem to be having. He is drinking A LOT, and has to pee every half hour (sometimes he doesn't even make it outside which has never happened before). His coat has gone very dry and lost its shine, and he generally seems miserable. All he wants to do is sleep all day whereas normally he's a very hyperactive crazy dog! I want to stop the pills but I was wondering if the side effects will go away and if I should wait it out a bit longer. He's been on them for a week, started on 2 tablets a day and is now down to 1 a day and due to go down to half a day or every 2 days soon. Are these side effects normal and will they last as long as he's on the cortizone?

Also, I was wondering what other alternative treatments there might be. I know omega and fatty acids are supposed to be good, but where do i get them? Are there special foods or do they come in pills or what?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Problem with join up???

I've tried join up with my horse twice now and although he does join up with me I've had a few problems that I've never had with other horses before. He's an extremely dominant horse and will kick out at me when I first send him away, runs around like a lunatic for the first 10 mins bucking and rearing, but eventually settles down. I can get his ear fixed on me and he licks and chews (although only once or twice and for a few seconds) but he never lowers his head. Is this just an idiosyncrasy of his or does it mean that the join up will not be as successful. I've kept sending him away for half an hour after i've got all the other signs but he never does it.

Also, after we do join up, he follows me around etc. lets me touch him all over, pick up his feet and everything, but it doesn't last very long. As soon as I stop playing with him or take the halter off, he goes back to being dominant. Should I try doing join up again straight away or will this just take practice?
