  • Order My Reading List?

I got my required reading list for a British Lit. class in the fall. I want to get a jump on it, but I'm pretty unfamiliar with the authors. So, how should I tackle this?

    The Last September, Elizabeth Bowen

    A Room with a View, E.M. Forster

    Howard's End, E.M. Forster

    The Fox/The Captain's Doll/The Ladybird, D.H. Lawrence

    To the Lighthouse, Virginia Woolf

    Mrs. Dalloway, Virginia Woolf

    The Secret Agent, Joseph Conrad

    Dubliners, James Joyce

    Stories, Katherine Mansfield

  • Secular volunteering opportunities?

I have an Ethics assignment that requires me to volunteer and write a paper on my experience, but I would rather my volunteering not be mixed with religious dogma. It has to be a place that provides "shelter" of some sort. Any ideas?

  • Officers: Do You Like CCWs?

I was just wondering if there are any police officers out there who would like to voice their opinions on handguns and concealed carry permits? It just seems like an untrained civilian would actually do more harm than good by pulling out a pistol and playing John McClane. I mean, they're not police officers. I just wanted to know. Also, I know what the Constitution says, that's not what I'm asking. I want honest opinions.

  • Republican/Democrat Education?

I was just wondering. They say that most schools have a liberal bias. I haven't seen it at my school, but maybe I just didn't notice it. So I'm wondering:

    1) Are you a Democrat or a Republican?

    (Dem)

    2) What is/was your college major?

    (English)

    3) Was your school biased in any way?

    (I don't notice it)

  • Would You Support a Voting Test?

Seriously. Whenever I talk about this, people think it's messed up, or racist like voting tests in the past were. But for real, can you really cast your best vote without knowing very general information about the US government, past and present? I don't think there's anything wrong with this? Am I the only one? You can drive your car into a school if you want, and they tested your skills in that. You can buy a gun with no test whatsoever and shoot your neighbor. Am I really asking that much?

  • President Obama on Guns?

When Obama came into office, there was talk about him wanting to take everyone's guns and all. Even today, people claim that Obama is concerned with severely limiting gun rights. However, I can't find anything that backs up any of this. Concerning guns, what has Obama done since taking office? Needless to say, I need sources please.

  • What's the douchiest college major?

I used to think that your tougher degrees would inevitably produce a higher percentage of douchebaggery, simply because nerds are generally portrayed as stuck-up a**holes in pop culture. Recently, though, I realized that I was wrong. Those smart dudes seem like jerks because they talk with facts and big words, which are hard to get around if you're unprepared. I realized that most of the jagoffs are in classes that don't care about facts so much, classes where students seem to be free to yell their opinions without backing them up. Even in classes that actually teach real facts, they are overlooked when discussion starts. It's crazy.

  • Are science and religion mutually exclusive?

I saw someone on another answer claim that they aren't, as a lot of people do. I was just wondering what you guys think. It seems to me that if you believe that the earth is around 6,000 years old, then the fact that its actually billions of years old doesn't bother you. If you believe that God created everything on earth, then evolution is laughable. On the other hand, if you base your opinions on observable fact, then magic and miracles and other unprovable phenomena seem childish.

  • How many DUIs are barely over the limit?

I was wondering what the number of DUIs is that come out to just over the legal limit--0.081 to 0.1, let's say. I am also concerned with how many alchohol-related deaths occur at the hands of someone who is barely over. Anything helps. Sources please.

The title is pretty much the question. Please cite sources. Thanks.

  • Can't Get CBS With an Antenna?

I've seen a few questions like this on here already, but they are old and from folks who aren't in my area, so I was wondering if anyone knew why, today, someone in Northeast Ohio wouldn't be able to receive CBS with an antenna? I've tried moving it and everything. Points go to whoever helps me watch the Browns.

  • What is my eyeglass prescription?

I just came back from the eye doctor. I asked for a copy of my prescription. She gave me one for contacts. Can I use this info to get glasses, or do I need additional info?

    Looks something like this:

    R -2.25 BC 8.6

    L -2.25 BC 8.6

There's also a spot that says "CYL" but there is a line through it.
